DESCRIPTION

This presentation, the final part of six on the practical analysis of significant properties of digital objects, offers a quick summary of the main points of the other five parts, and provides credits and contact details. The presentation was given as part of module 3 of a 5-module course on digital preservation tools for repository managers, presented by the JISC KeepIt project. For more on this and other presentations in this course look for the tag 'KeepIt course' in the project blog http://blogs.ecs.soton.ac.uk/keepit/

Curatorial role in SP

•Object analysis will enumerate technical properties and identify the purpose for each

•Stakeholder analysis will determine what is important to different user groups by determining actual behaviours, turning them into functions and cross-matching with object analysis

•The success or otherwise of transformations can measured by reference to Significant Properties

SPs in repository workflows•Availability and adequacy of characterisation tools• (Partly) manual activity for the foreseeable future

•Encoding for machine processing• Requires a metadata schema

•Possibility of standard ‘profiles’ over time• Sharing results and best practice

•Always relate to institutional mission
