SIGs List updated Apr 2015 – page 2

Welcome to the world of SIGs! SIGs (Special Interest Groups) are created and run by Mensans to bring together members with shared interests, hobbies or passions. Members communicate through the SIG’s own newsletter; many SIGs organise social events and run competitions, electronic discussion lists or websites. SIGs can be humorous or serious, technical or intellectual, factual or fictional, based on the past or looking into the future. You don’t have to be an ‘expert’ to join the SIG, or to take part. All SIGs will welcome you, whatever your level of ability or knowledge in any particular subject. Being interested in the subject is all you need. You will gain far more enjoyment and pleasure from your membership of SIGs, like your membership of Mensa itself, if you contribute to the SIG’s activities. The exchange of information, news, views, humour and much else is what SIGs are all about. Members of British Mensa (and Irish Mensa) can receive printed newsletters from 2 SIGs free of charge. There is a small charge for membership of additional SIGs, to cover printing and postage costs for newsletters. As you receive copies of newsletters for your 3rd, 4th etc SIGs, your SIG fund ‘balance’ is depleted until you are asked to top it up with a further payment. The frequency and size of newsletters varies from SIG to SIG. Some use colour covers, some print their covers on coloured and paper and others are purely black and white publications. The List includes SIG names, brief information about the purpose and scope of each SIG and contact details for the SIG Secretary (SIGSec). P denotes a proposed SIG. S denotes that the SIG is temporarily suspended, due to a vacancy for the role of SIGSec. The newsletters of all SIGs are now available free by email as PDFs, which does not count as one of your 2 free (or extra paying SIGs). An indication of (approximate) typical filesize is given under each SIG’s entry. * To join SIGs, complete and return the application form in the centre spread of this booklet. Or, for a personal insight into the SIG, contact the SIGSec(s), quoting your Mensa membership number. This List also includes brief details of two long established contact / support groups and e-SIGs – the latter being online discussion forums at www.mensa.org.uk. Membership of a contact / support group or use of an e-SIG does not count as one of your two free, or other paying, SIGs. The SIGs List is © British Mensa, St John's House, St John's Square, Wolverhampton WV2 4AH. Mensa as a whole has no opinions. Any views expressed are not necessarily those of the SIGs Officer, other officers or directors of Mensa. The information in this publication is believed to be correct at time of publication. British Mensa accepts no responsibility for any errors, omissions or misdescriptions. The pictures shown are of recent SIG newsletter covers; no guarantee is made that you will receive newsletters with identical or similar designs, as that is at the discretion of each SIGSec or editor. SIGs are run by volunteer members, so please bear this in mind when corresponding with SIGSecs. No SIGSec or other SIG volunteer is authorised to bind Mensa or to act in any way on behalf of Mensa. ANTHROPOLOGY (S) Anthropology is the study of humans, and essentially an investigation to discover what is means to be human. Two of the more predominant aspects are the social side; how people interact, think and live in different contexts, how societal organization varies etc., and the biological side; adaptation of humans to different environments, how humans evolved from animals and so on. Anthropology uses a rounded approach to research the human condition; and is a practice, the relevance of which should not be undermined; globalisation is constantly making the world feel like a smaller place, and so the use of anthropology compiles information on diverse cultures and languages so that this information can continue to exist and be used. Anthropology covers topics ranging from politics, to theology and many more. The subject is a great way to view things from different perspectives, and this mainly relevant in the modern day as conflict among us is particularly difficult to cope with. If you are interested in discussing interesting, intellectually stimulating and relevant subjects then the articles in this SIG should be just right for you. New SIGSec needed

ASTROLOGY Over the last 150 years there has been an enormous expansion of the West's cognisance of Eastern philosophies, its own esoteric and occult traditions, astrology, I Ching, Tarot, meditation etc. This SIG is a discussion forum for those who wish to find a deep, basic connection in all these things. The fall of the cards in tarot, of the yarrow-sticks in I Ching, and the position of the planets when a question is put (hororary astrology) all have that underlying basis once you have accepted the concept of the universal interconnectedness of things. CLASSICAL MUSIC Classical Music SIG exists to share thoughts, appreciation, knowledge and expertise about classical music. We cover all eras and genres, including orchestral, chamber, choral and opera, amongst others. Not all members are performers - some are just interested listeners. Our quarterly newsletter, Intermezzo, contains reviews of concerts and CDs/DVDs, members' opinions about music and composers, debates about various aspects of classical music, snippets of information - in fact, anything to do with classical music! The style reflects members’ contributions, so whilst some articles may be academic or scholarly in tone, others are more light-hearted and informal. As well as the newsletter, the other main feature of the SIG is the annual Mensa Music Weekend, which brings together Mensan players and performers (including singers) of varying standards (and their guests) for an enjoyable weekend of music making. COACHING We are all interested in personal development, whether it is developing our abilities in new areas, in work, in relationships, personal growth, wealth & happiness or coaching others to improve their lives – Coaching is a structured approach to investigating and raising a person’s potential. Whether involved in this area full-time or with just an active interest, you will have a great deal to offer members. The SIG’s goal is to encourage members to contribute to our understanding of coaching, its potential, new developments, and new opportunities. We’d welcome contributions from all members in this vast area, so please feel free to make a contribution – no effort is too small, articles, letters, example experiences, even a single book recommendation is enough to share your positive experience with others! Newsletter as PDF: 1MB Glenn Murphy, 11 Collingwood Court, London, W5 3DA ([email protected])

CODES & CIPHERS This SIG is about communications - secure communications. Most codes are public and open, but ciphers have always been a form of secret writing, and there are, of course, secure military, diplomatic and commercial codes. Also, a forgotten part of classical cryptography is mnemonics: how do you remember all those passwords and PINs? COUNTRY MUSIC To paraphrase Jeff Foxworthy “You don’t have to be a Redneck”. British Mensa’s Country Music SIG provides opportunities to hear other members’ views on the music we all love – and a platform for your own opinions too. Whichever is your taste, the more traditional or the modern style of Country, International artists or our excellent home grown talent, whether you are an armchair listener or a line dancer – there is something for everyone. The SIGSec has his own Country Music radio show and reviews new releases for one of the major publications. The newsletter “Yee Haw” reviews both recorded and live events, carries advance notice and box office details of upcoming tours and in its regular San Antone column invites members attending the same concerts to meet up beforehand. It is hoped to be able to include brief interviews with ‘names’ from the industry and the occasional competition. Mr Chris Smith, ‘Kinellar’, Dittons Road, Polegate BN26 6JG ([email protected])

CRAFT If you enjoy crafting, whether you’re a beginner or an expert, you will be welcome to join the Craft SIG to share your enthusiasm with other creative Mensans. Recent newsletters have featured cardmaking, scrapbooking, knitting, spinning, jewellery making, patchworking, painting and many other crafts. The Newsletter, Craftophile, aims to be both interesting and stimulating and there is at least one prize competition or challenge in each issue. There is a discussion forum on the Mensa website for your feedback on various project ideas and articles, and a Facebook Group Site. Members may also meet at national Craft Fairs. CRICKET Believe it or not, cricket is still our number one summer sport and is played every month of the year in some part of the world. The Cricket SIG journal How’s That! runs to 20+ pages and covers all aspects of cricket – news, views, statistics, laws, rules, umpiring, books, tours, personal experiences and recollections. Active players and watchers have the opportunity to use the SIG facilities to arrange visits, matches and other get-togethers. Football likes to consider itself “The Beautiful Game”, but cricket can rightly be described as not only beautiful but also as more than a game, both mirroring and exaggerating the ever-changing patterns of life itself. Why not drop me a line NOW for the latest journal and more information. Newsletter as PDF: 5MB Ron Blackman, 59 The Close, Norwich, Norfolk NR1 4EH

Hopefully, each newsletter will prompt further articles and letters, serious and light, long and short, and cover some of the practicalities of teaching and learning as well as the more abstract features of Education, providing support and encouragement as well as information and opinions. SIG members are encouraged to write in with their own views of issues dealt with in the newsletter, and new topics for discussion are always welcome; new members are similarly valued for the fresh ideas they bring. EVOLUTION The subject of this SIG is the rich diversity of life, past and present. Topics for discussion will include the origins and seemingly limitless variety of species which live and have lived on this planet and, while it is not a part of modern evolutionary theory, on how life might have begun in the first place. All these living things are in a continuous process of change as a result of selective pressures. Estimates suggest that current biodiversity is but a fraction of what has gone before; some 99% of all species that have ever lived are extinct. Whether your interest is in dinosaurs, hominids, trilobites, ammonites, birds, mammoths, fish, amphibians, reptiles, plants, spiders, beetles or anything to do with life past and present, this SIG is for you - fascinating as we are to ourselves, we are but one tiny bud on the huge tree of life. This SIG will try to include all the other buds and trace their branches back to the source. Newsletter as PDF: 3MB Janet Mason, 33 Martin Road, Harleston, Norfolk IP20 9HX ([email protected])

FANTASY & HORROR Dark and brooding depths of ultimate horror are entwined with magical and mystical worlds of pure fantasy. Let imagination be your only constraint as you enter the Fantasy & Horror SIG. If you dabble in the fantastic tales of authors such as Eddings, McCaffrey, Tolkien, or Pratchett, thrive on the terrifying tomes of King, Barker, Lovecraft, or Lumley, or enjoy watching classic tales of fantasy or horror on film, this is the place to air and share your views. The newsletter, Phantasm, plays host to a wide variety of articles and opinions relating to both fantasy and horror. In its ghoulish pages novels and films are regularly reviewed and discussed, short stories abound, origins of myths and legends are uncovered, screen stars are interviewed, and even puzzles occasionally appear. Classic monsters and characters from history and fiction are open to debate, including vampires, mummies, dragons, and wizards to name but a few. So whether you merely have a fleeting interest in the worlds of horror and fantasy, or are a die-hard Discworld fan, the Fantasy & Horror SIG is the best way to find out more and correspond with like-minded folk. Why not join now and let your imagination take control. Newsletter as PDF: 1MB

FOOTBALL The greatest footballer that ever lived - Edson Arantes do Nascimento, or Pele - once called football the Beautiful Game, from which Football SIG’s newsletter gets its name. We feature some of the best football writing you're ever likely to see. Our contributors write regularly with side-splitting match reports, informed news, totally uninformed gossip, the latest issues in the sport, riveting travelogues to strange countries, and on the odd occasion, strange travelogues to riveting countries. The late, great Bill Shankly said an awful lot of things in his distinguished life, including those immortal words about football being more important than life and death. Somehow, despite his life eating, sleeping and living football, I don't think he really meant it. But when you get down to the fans, the ones who lose sleep worrying about a cup result, the ones who'll slip away from a family wedding to listen to the results on a scratchy wireless or the ones who'll be at a meaningless midweek fixture in Walsall while their wife is giving birth 200 miles away, the sport holds some kind of intense fascination that transcends all of life's episodes, its disasters. Perhaps Shanks was right after all, it's just that the drama isn't always on the pitch. And that's what The Beautiful Game is all about - not just 22 men and a ball, but the thousands upon thousands who live the game a million times more than the super-rich players. The game is about us. Newsletter as PDF: 2MB Nick Saxton, 2/2, 5 Broomhill Path, Glasgow G11 7AL ([email protected])

FREEMASONRY (S) Freemasonry is one of the world’s oldest and largest non-religious, non-political, fraternal and charitable organisations. There are 250,000 Freemasons throughout England and Wales, and districts overseas. Worldwide, the figure rises to six million. Many use their membership to help deserving cases and hence make a contribution to wider society. Other become Freemasons – as many people join Mensa – to make new friends. Despite this, Freemasonry is often perceived, and criticised, as being unnecessarily secretive. The main purpose of this SIG – proposed by a Mensan who is a longstanding Freemason – is to encourage Mensan non-Freemasons to find out more about Freemasonry. It is not a recruiting body for Freemasonry, but rather a forum in which non-Freemasons can find out more. We can’t guarantee to answer every possible question, but we hope to open a new door for dialogue and understanding between Freemasons and others. As a secondary purpose, naturally the SIG welcomes Mensans who are Freemasons and who may enjoy the opportunity to share ideas and experiences. New SIGSec needed

LAW

This SIG is proposed with both the lay person and the professional lawyer in mind. It will seek to stimulate discussion on the variety of legal issues which face our society in modern times, with specific reference to the laws of the United Kingdom. For example, the issues raised by the recent case of Douglas v Hello and the impact that this will have on the interpretation of the Human Rights Act would be one potential area of discussion. Other issues which would be discussed may include the role the law has in moderating Genetic information; death penalty concerns/ International law; the recent reforms to the criminal justice system; the role of solicitor-advocates in the High Courts; environmental protection; and how United Kingdom law compares with that in other jurisdictions, most notably Europe and America. In all, the SIG will provide an interesting and informative platform to both delve into and develop an understanding of law in our day and age. As such, if there are any issues which members would like to raise, in relation to any area of law, then they are warmly invited to submit any works that they would feel would be of relevance. LEFT OF CENTRE (S)

This is a forum for the discussion of politics, current affairs and social/cultural issues from a broad “left-of-centre” political viewpoint. The SIG will be non-partisan, and will not seek to promote membership or policies of any political party or group. However, Mensans who are members of a Party or group will, of course be free to contribute and debate from their particular point of view. Contributions will be encouraged on: current national and international political issues and events; political, social or cultural history from a left-of-centre perspective; philosophical contributions; reports on conferences, meetings or events attended by the writer that may be of general interest to members; book and arts reviews of related material; political humour or satire. The SIG will not be used for: promoting membership of a political party or group; or promoting support for any candidate for public election (although reports of any members’ experiences in standing for office after the event may be of interest!) LINGUASIG

LinguaSIG's interest is languages. Unknown languages like Etruscan, dead like Latin and Egyptian, living languages from all over the world, language hybrids and pidgins, created languages like Esperanto and Klingon, sign languages, writing systems and spelling, pronunciation, culture and language politics, teaching methods, anything to do with language. Some of our members learn languages just for fun; when you learn a nearby language you also learn something about your own language, and learning any language shows you what interestingly different other ways there are of saying (nearly) the same thing. It stretches the mind! Other interests arise from holidays or religious or cultural interests, others are language professionals and that includes teachers, some live abroad, some are language learners and others speak only English. As in all of Mensa, there is huge variety. Languages change. Latin broke up into the Romance languages we know today, they are changing now, into dialects which may become new languages or may die out, whole languages become extinct. All this has immense cultural and political importance. There are philosophical issues, how truthfully does language represent that untidy thing "the real world"? How far does it shape our minds? Language is what makes us human, other creatures have some of the powers that we have, but only we speak. How can there be any kind of mental life or community without it? But it's not all heavy stuff. There are also jokes, puns and poetry. LinguaSIG publishes its newsletters "LinguaSignal" about 4 times a year and uses the e-mail group Lingua-e for general chat. MATHEMATICS

Readers of Mensa’s Mathematics SIG's newsletter, SIGma, can immerse themselves among a dazzling array of mathematical news, features, lessons, and of course, puzzles! In each issue we sport an assortment of mathematical news from all around the globe, including the latest breakthroughs and new discoveries; feature articles from scientific journals and our own members; and beginner's lessons in fundamental mathematical techniques, such as calculus, number theory and the complex realm. Puzzles ranging in difficulty from those that would be accessible to younger members to those that would challenge a research mathematician can all be found. PAGAN

The word Pagan covers a very broad range of differing beliefs, such as Druidism and the Wiccan, Celtic, and Odinist traditions, to name a few. The purpose of Pagan SIG is to bring all these differing belief systems to the attention of all those who are interested in learning more about them, whatever their own beliefs may be. Pagans believe in living in harmony with the world around them, and that all things which exist have a spiritual essence, which is received from the Earth, who is the mother of us all. In our newsletter, you will find contributions on a wide range of subjects, including: the meaning and use of the Runes, and also their relevance to modern society; the Synod of Whitby; the chief Gods and Goddesses worshipped by different faiths; explanations of what the many Pagan festivals are all about; poems; retellings of the Norse Sagas; the early Kings of Britain; hand-fasting ceremonies; and the significance of animals in Pagan tradition. PHILOSOPHICAL DISCUSSION

The word “Philosophy” originates from the Greek word philosophia, meaning "love of wisdom”. A case for studying the subject was put forward over 2000 years ago by Epicurus, a Greek philosopher: “Let no one when young delay to study philosophy, not when he is old grow weary of his study. For no one can come too early or too late to secure the health of his soul”. A twentieth century case for such study was made by Bertrand Russell, who stated: “Philosophy is to be studied, not for the sake of any definite answers to its questions, since no definite answers can, as a rule, be known to be true, but rather for the sake of the questions themselves; because these questions enlarge our conception of what is possible, enrich our intellectual imagination, and diminish the dogmatic assurance which closes the mind against speculation”. To learn more about wisdom (ancient and modern), interesting problems or real life dilemmas, join the SIG and enjoy its journal, “THINK”. There you’ll find articles exploring philosophical, political, religious or scientific theories, biographies of famous thinkers, occasional book reviews, and readers’ letters. We also hold an annual gathering at an Oxford college, where members can listen to talks on a range of topics, enjoy the serenity of an ancient college, sample nearby pubs, and get to know each other through that good old Socratic method of relaxed discussion. POLITICS

For any member who has a view on any aspect of life that can be linked in any way to politics, from council tax to nuclear deterrents. This is where you can praise or condemn what the politicians of today and of the past have done for us and to us, and give your own solutions to the problems of the world, or the problems of your street. This is not the SIG for those who do not want to be exposed to opinions that are different from their own or to have their political beliefs challenged. We do not have a conservative or liberal or socialist view, not even a third way view. There is no ‘our’ view, just the individual view of each member. Newsletter as PDF: 1MB

PORTMEIRION

We organise an annual weekend trip to this magical village made famous in the Prisoner series. Currently we are the only group permitted to block-book all the self catering accommodation and places are at a premium. The purpose of the SIG is to keep you informed about plans for the weekend and give you a say in what they are. Newsletter as PDF: 1MB

PROFESSIONAL WRITERS

The Professional Writers’ SIG was formed in 1984. The SIG is a means of communication of news, views, experience and help for writers and also includes examples of their work. As well as those who earn a living from writing or publishing, SIG members include amateur writers, those aspiring to be professional writers, students of writing and people who are merely interested or curious. All types of writing are welcome and members include published authors of non-fiction, fiction and poetry. Contributions to our quarterly newsletter Write Justified are welcomed by email or by post (handwritten items accepted). Newsletter as PDF: 1MB

PSYCHOLOGY

Psychology is currently one of the most popular subjects to study in higher and further education. Our membership reflects this as many of our members are studying at various levels from GCSE to Open University degrees to doctorates; however many of our members are also of the sit-down-over-a-pint-and-discuss school of psychology! Our newsletter, Cognito, allows members to air their own personal theories and ask and respond to questions. Psychology is difficult to define as it covers such a wide range of topics (the most generally agreed upon definition is that psychology is the scientific study of the mind and brain), but this ensures that almost everyone will find something of interest within the SIG. PUZZLE

The International SIG for anyone interested in puzzles. The scope covers word puzzles and crossword puzzles, logic puzzles, Japanese puzzles, such as Sudoku and Nurikabe, mathematical brain teasers, lateral thinking problems, quizzes and picture quizzes, discussion of physical / mechanical puzzles, computer / internet based puzzles and puzzle games, and puzzle books and publications. Contributions to the Enigma newsletter are always gratefully received, and whilst experimentation and innovation of puzzle types are more than welcome, traditional types of puzzles are equally appreciated. QUIZ

Our newsletter Interrobang (a printer's term for a combined exclamation and question mark) now regularly runs to 30+ pages and includes several quizzes. Some of these are theme based, some are general - some are easy, some are fiendish, but all are aimed at being fun to do. Controversy is no stranger to Interrobang but that tends to be an inherent part of quizzes as those who regularly attend pub functions will testify. In any event it gives food for thought and adds a measure of debate and interest to the proceedings. The newsletter also contains items about TV quizzes where members either have entry details or a story to tell of their fortunes under the spotlight. Mastermind, 100 Percent, Fifteen-to-One, University Challenge and Today's the Day have all had a mention in this respect and hopefully act as an incentive for others to have a go. Occasionally letters feature and these allow members to express their opinions on the standard of the questions, the scoring system and any other quiz related issues that they wish to raise. Hopefully this ensures that the content of the newsletter reflects as much as possible what the members want to see. Newsletter as PDF: 2MB

RAMBLING & MOUNTAINEERING

For those with an active interest in the outdoors, whether in scaling dizzy heights or in gentle countryside rambles, and all tastes in between. The SIG holds day meetings in the Lakes, Pennines, Dales, Peaks and North Wales, and if active members in the south wish to organise meetings the SIG will help to promote them. There have been weekend meetings in Scotland (Skye, Glencoe, Isle of Rum), South Wales and North Wales. There is an annual camping week near Appleby in the Eden valley, handy for the Lakes and North Pennines. Further afield the SIG has organised an extended weekend in the McGillicuddy Reeks in south west Ireland, a week-long walking trip to Mallorca and members have arranged a trip to the Voges Massif in eastern France. SIG members have been helped in achieving such objectives as reaching the top 100 Lakeland peaks in the space of one calendar year and climbing the Inaccessible Pinnacle on Skye in the quest to ‘bag’ all the Munros. There is a newsletter, Compass, which appears quarterly, and a website linked to the Mensa Global page. Interests range from an Extreme Rock fanatic to those who prefer a gentle amble on the flat. Where there are divergent interests we split the meeting into two or more groups and meet up again for refreshments afterwards. Newsletter as PDF: 3MB

ROCK

When Rock SIG was formed back in 1988 it really was all about rock music, but things evolve and the SIG and its newsletter now cover a staggeringly eclectic range of modern recorded music. While it would take a person with very diverse tastes to enjoy all that is covered in the newsletter there is always something in it for everyone. There is a wealth of great music being released throughout the world but, unless it is fashionable, then it is unlikely that the average music lover will get to hear about it. This SIG goes some way towards addressing that issue, with music news and tour dates, interviews with many famous and less well known musicians and groups alongside reviews of popular, independent and underground releases each issue. SAFE DRIVING

The main purpose of this SIG is to support Mensa members with regard to driving safety issues and anything else related to driving. The focus is to reduce crashes and driving incidents (e.g. road rage) among Mensa members; giving advice on driver training; guidance on reducing driving costs; sharing driving experiences; giving tips on driving safely; list resources relating to driver safety and provide a forum where drivers can discuss anything related to driving and road safety. The newsletter will contain advice on driving, articles from members, resources for driver training, and articles from trainers and professional drivers. Activities such as drive outs, road safety seminars, training days and meetings could be organised. Regular meetings could be arranged where members can get and give advice on driving concerns. The SIG welcomes professional drivers, occasional drivers, driving instructors/trainers, young drivers, older drivers, experienced or inexperienced drivers, learner drivers and drivers of any class of vehicle. All are welcome to share their experiences, knowledge and services. Mensan drivers helping other Mensa members with their driving concerns, enabling their driving experiences to be positive and pleasurable. Just like the good old days. Newsletter as PDF: 1MB

SAILING

For all things nautical, whether sail or power, tidal or non-tidal, port or starboard, Sailing SIG is intended to be a fun way to stimulate interest, learning and discussion on all aspects of boating from beginner right up to Yachtmaster Ocean level. Whether it be tales of seafaring derring-do fighting pirates off Penzance, or the more mundane (“Port is red, right?”), we’d welcome your contributions, chat and cruising reports (don’t forget photos!) There will be quizzes to enhance your learning, sailing advice, jokes and more. Given sufficient interest, there may also be weekend sailing cruises organised in order to give beginners the chance to give it a go, or just to get out on the water some more for the more experienced. All of the above will appear in our “Nautical Natter” newsletter. Newsletter as PDF: 2MB

SCIENCE

Discussion will range through mainstream orthodox sciences from Newtonian physics to the neutron detectors of Raymond Davis Jnr., Darwinian selection to the selfish genes of Dawkins. We'll discuss terraforming Mars, global warming/cooling, 'green' energy, genetically modified life forms and physical materials, as well as the effectiveness of defensive measures to counteract terrorism and fraud. If your interests range through astronomy to zoology, from nanobots to archaeology, then this is the SIG for you! Write off for your sample copy of our journal and add your voice to the debate. Any member of the Science SIG is welcome to send in a letter or article to be published in the journal, subject only to normal editorial discretion. Should you have a school or university science essay or dissertation that you are particularly pleased with, and that you think deserves a wider audience, then please send it in and we’ll see if we can publish it. SCIENCE FICTION

The SIG reviews science fiction and fantasy in almost every format. Books are the most reviewed source material but we have written on films, videos, TV, comics, games (board or computer), conventions, shops and retailers, music, artwork and a wide range of SF&F merchandise. Whilst most of the material is of UK or USA origin, we have written on other foreign sources, shops and publications. The SIG is an outlet for artists, cartoonists, authors and even a graphic novel. We strive to assist those who have questions; members include writers and researchers. We are generalists but co-exist alongside and share membership with more specialist groups. Young or elder, specialist or generalist, new to or experienced in the genre, all are welcome. Robots and rockets, galactic intrigue and warfare, new age or stone age, fantasy realms or far-flung regions, alternate history or alternative lifestyles, holes (black, worm or in the space/time continuum), cyberspace and Cybermen, Batman or vampire (alien, supernatural or slayer), boldly going and coming back to the future, dwarfs (red or otherwise), worlds (ring, disc, new and apart), area weapons and Area 51, aliens and artefacts. SCOUTS & GUIDES

The idea behind a Scouts and Guides SIG is to bring together Mensan Scouts and Guides from across Britain to share stories, songs, activities and all other activities influenced by Baden-Powell! If people are interested, we can set up penpals between units, exchange badges, or even go so far as to organise joint camps. So whether you are an enthusiastic Beaver or a dedicated member of the Trefoil Guild, your favourite songs, games and stories will always be encouraged by Scouts and Guides SIG. SECURITY & RISK MANAGEMENT

This SIG covers Information Security (and associated fields of Penetration Testing) and also business security/risk, physical security, cryptography, security in law, ethics and security, airport security etc. The basic objectives of the SIG are to involve members in this constantly evolving field, promote discussion, raise awareness and serve as a networking hub for those interested in the field - whether as professionals, clients or simply observers. We hope over time to supplement the newsletter with other activities such as events and online discussions.

SHERLOCK HOLMES

‘When you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth.’ The story of Sherlock Holmes – the most famous detective, and one of the most famous characters, in English literature – has plenty of improbabilities, and so do the stories in which he features. If you’re interested in things Holmesian, whether it’s the original books, the Basil Rathbone films, the various TV series starring Peter Cushing, Jeremy Brett and Benedict Cumberbatch or something else, join this SIG and share your enthusiasm. We’ll consider Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, whose life and times were every bit as extraordinary as those of his deerstalker-wearing detective. Holmes and his faithful companion and chronicler, Dr Watson, were major influences on the fictional detectives who followed them so, if you want to debate Holmes’ merits against those of Miss Marple, Hercule Poirot or even the morose Inspector of Colin Dexter’s books, this is the SIG for you. SPACE

Space SIG and its newsletter SpaceSIGNL exist for members to exchange views, ask questions, and explore theories, on all matters concerning Space. Space as a topic is very wide, and subjects covered recently have been the Drake Equation, the search for SETI, Global Warming (the result of solar activity, in the main – or not?), musings on the advantages or otherwise of manned space exploration, practical astronomy explained and write-ups of astronomical holidays and events. There are regular letters pages, biographies of personalities in the field, and a lively Discussion and Debate corner. In addition, the Hubble Space Telescope provides stunning ‘Space Art’. A dynamic and fascinating SIG, for all those with an interest in Space, whatever the context, this is the SIG for you. Newsletter as PDF: 4MB

SPAIN & LATIN AMERICA (S)

There are 21 officially Spanish-speaking nations on Earth and it’s a minority or second language of countries as far flung as the USA, Philippines, Morocco & Andorra. About 500 million people think in Spanish and it’s considered to be one of the world’s big 6 languages [official UN numbers] alongside English, Chinese, Arabic, French & Russian. Language, thought & culture are inextricably linked; they shape each other and their participants. Though the mother country, Spain, could provide plenty of content for a newsletter, the Spanish didn’t stay at home (Hernan Cortés & Francisco Pizarro, to name just two) and neither will we. There are too many lovely variations on the theme to explore rather than ignore. Latino News is all about Spain, Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Equatorial Guinea, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Puerto Rico, El Salvador, Uruguay & Venezuela. Hispanic culture has its own way of going about things and our newsletter Latino News hopes to explore all of them, including sightseeing, food, music, dance, sports, news, history, politics and, of course, the Spanish language. STAR TREK

This SIG is for all fans of the universally-popular and immensely diverse Star Trek world. From the imagination of the brilliant scriptwriters on this show were born mobile phones, portable computer data, audio interface with computers, motion sensitive doors, and more. How many television programmes can claim that they have changed the world! Star Trek has become a planet wide cultural reference – Who hasn’t uttered “Beam me up Scotty” in tricky situations. Some well known authors began their writing career with Star Trek episodes and books. There have been multimedia exhibitions in Las Vegas, Star Trek cruises, conventions and fan produced movies and there is a permanently touring exhibition of original sets and costumes. The Star Trek SIG is interested in all this and more. We have discussed the nature of warp drive and the transporter with the very people who are most likely to discover it. We have analysed characters, waged war on which was the best episode, or the best version of Trek. We ponder the meaning of a real Prime Directive and interpret episodes with a keenness only the ultimate in fans could possess. Newsletter as PDF: 1MB

THINKTANK

This SIG is intended to act as a forum for suggested new ways and means to deal with present day problems. These could include Global Warning - is it natural or manmade and how does that affect the effectiveness of possible solutions? Are Wind Turbines or Nuclear Power better for the environment? Should motorway hard-shoulders be converted to traffic lanes? Should drugs and prostitution be legalised? What can be done about our over-funded and under-performing NHS, education and imprisonment systems? Should adoptive parents be racially compatible? Should prisoners be treated as criminals or patients? This SIG does not have any affiliations, political or otherwise and will not allow uninformed rants. It is designed to hear your solutions, arguments and new ideas, and to encourage spirited but civilised debate. It will allow, and indeed positively encourages, your ideas on what is right or wrong with the ways in which society deals with its many contentious issues, such as the Human Rights Act, Immigration and membership of the Common Market. TRAVEL

We are Mensa’s international SIG for travel. Our purpose is to promote travel and foster contact amongst Mensans worldwide. We publish a newsletter, VISA, six times a year. Members exchange travel information, tips and advice and debate the issues and effects of tourism; they also write in to show a well-known destination in a fresh light or to introduce members to a lesser-known part of the world. Members will be interested to hear your views and experiences of travel and tourism, whether in the UK, Europe or anywhere else. We have organised various SIG events, in the form of illustrated lectures where our members talk about their travels, or more informal visits to a UK or overseas location. A dedicated SIG forum on the British Mensa website provides further opportunities for debate and discussion, and a website provides an archive of past articles and galleries of travel images. Whatever your interest in travel, whether you are a traveller, tourist or an industry professional, we welcome your active participation. Newsletter as PDF: 5MB

WHAT IF? What if you could start a conversational hare, however obscure, however “silly”, however erudite, however you like… and someone else would always join in the discussion? “What if?” is such a fascinating opening to a question… and naturally invites such a wide variety of replies. That’s the joy of the What If? SIG. The topics covered are as varied as the members’ imaginations. Some of the questions addressed are weird and wonderful. Some are very topical. Some are really serious issues. Some are seemingly trivial or light-hearted but can lead to amazing discussions. Of course the tone of each newsletter varies with the contributions from members, but most are a mix of flights of fancy and fun one-liners together with more serious considered responses which are still generally informal and thought provoking. You don’t need to be an expert on anything to have an opinion on it. You don’t need to know much about a topic to ask a question or to give your point of view. All contributions are welcome, whether new questions, “answers” to previous questions or further comments on previous responses, or anything else you find interesting (or wonder if others might know something about or find interesting). Imaginative speculation, fantasy or extrapolation from current knowledge, possible future problems and/or solutions and whatever else comes to mind. Friendly discussions and interesting asides, light-hearted and intriguing… Newsletter as PDF: 1MB Su Gale, 1 Fordington Gardens, Dorchester DT1 1AN ([email protected])

WHISKY Are you interested in examining, understanding and appreciating Whiskies? Not just Scotch Whisky in its many and varied presentations, but globally e.g. Irish Whiskey, Japanese Whiskey, Indian Whiskey, Canadian, American and so on. Worldwide, whisky engenders tremendous interest with enthusiasts ranging from aficionados of single malts and blends to collectors of the product in diverse presentations of bottles and decanters. These can be of considerable value in certain cases - e.g. the record for the most expensive whisky is currently the Macallan 64 yr. old in a Lalique Decanter (1.5L) which sold in 2010 at a charity auction in the USA for US$460,000 (about £288,000). This SIG is a platform for those interested not only in the method of distillation and related aspects of Scotch Whiskies but also in exchanging views on various whiskies produced in other recognised regions of the world. This SIG includes all recognised whiskies including blended products and associated materials - whisky jugs, posters, and related distillery paraphernalia of interest to whisky collectors of which there are many throughout the globe. In today's world where the use of "New Technology" detracts to some degree from personal interaction, an interest in Whisky and its traditional manufacturing methods provide an enjoyable diversion into what to many is a mystery. The newsletter regularly contains a range of topics from the raw materials used and production methodology to cask storage and finished products in unique presentations for markets. WHODUNNIT This SIG is for anyone who loves a good cosy crime mystery be it in print or on screen. Agatha, the newsletter, includes reviews, recommendations, discussions and debates such as who is the best Marple or which is the best whodunnit of all time. I'd like to hear from anyone who loves Midsomer Murders or the excellent Miss Fisher Mysteries on TV as well as fans of novels from the Golden Age through to more modern writers such as M C Beaton or Rebecca Tope. Any recommendations for books or authors will be gratefully received. Also, if anyone has been to Greenways or the Agatha Christie weekend in Torquay and wants to share, that would be great too. YOGA This SIG will bring together all those Mensans who practise yoga, study yoga and anyone who is interested in the subject. I am interested in the relationship between intellect and the highly discerning cognitive mapping that takes place in asana practice and the observation of the breath. Indeed recent studies have shown that those who meditate regularly have more grey matter! We can discuss our practice and experience and the esoteric texts, and we could get together from time to time to share our knowledge and understanding in practice. Other Contact / Support Groups Members may be interested in knowing about these long-established contact / support groups within British Mensa. Please note that these are not Special Interest Groups (SIGs) and therefore that joining them does not count as one of your two ‘free’ or other paying SIGs. In order to join them, you need to write to the named contact in each case. British Mensa accepts no responsibility for any errors or omissions in the text below, or for the activities of these groups.

GLAM (GAY, LESBIAN AND MENSAN) This is an independent group, established 25 years ago, with an annual fee. Membership is confidential, so no-one need be “outed” by joining. Regular events include: A monthly Sunday lunch meeting, on the “teens” date (13-19), at a member’s home. Usually the host provides the food and attendees bring their own drink. However, sometimes one provides the venue and another provides the food, or we have a “bring and share” meeting. These meetings are very informal and are purely for socialising. A monthly evening restaurant meeting in London, usually mid-week. Venues range from reasonably expensive to cheap, but the outrageously pricey restaurants are generally avoided (hence La Gavroche has never featured!). The monthly newsletter provides details of forthcoming meetings and other events, articles from members (reviews, travel tips, humour, gay issues, poetry etc) and a monthly calendar (featuring a photo of some poor unsuspecting member(s) caught on candid camera). It’s also a vehicle for anyone offering services or wanting information about something. The members’ directory is published each year and contains details volunteered by members, plus photo if wished. Inclusion is not compulsory and members can omit their address and channel correspondence through the group Secretary. Other events are arranged throughout the year. We try to arrange meeting points during any of the gay festivals (Summer Rites, Manchester Mardi Gras, Brighton Pride etc). We have an affiliation with the USA Gay SIG and exchange newsletters, sometimes using each other’s articles.

TRANSGENDER This group is for anyone who questions the conventionally accepted boundaries of gender, or anyone who is interested in gender-related issues. The object of the group is to discuss any aspects of gender, from vital to trivial, from tragic to hilarious. We can also provide information, mutual help, comfort and amusement. Membership is open to anyone interested, and might include:Transvestites (TVs) [some prefer the term cross-dressers] whether out in the open or "in the closet". Indeed the latter are particularly welcome, as they have the most to gain by making contact with others. Transsexuals (TSs), who are convinced that they are in a body of the opposite sex to that of their perceived gender identity, and seek to live as the opposite sex to that of their birth. Significant Others (SOs), by which we mean concerned wives, girlfriends, parents, siblings, friends or colleagues of TVs/TSs. Mothers and wives, particularly, tend to think "What did I do wrong?" - and the answer is, of course, nothing! Professionals - doctors, psychiatrists, counsellors, police, lawyers and others concerned with gender issues, who may be able to offer sound advice or information from their particular expertise. Those interested in the subject - from the mildest passing curiosity to wanting to meet and get to know TVs/TSs. Membership is completely open. We are aware of the sensitivity of some personal circumstances. Personal details of members will be held only by the group Secretary, and mailings will be addressed exactly as specified by the individual member. Christine-Jane Wilson, 22 Hillside, Hay Lane, Kingsbury, London NW9 0NE ([email protected])

E-SIGs E-SIGs are electronic ‘virtual community’ discussion lists. Membership is free and does not count as one of your two free, or other paying, SIGs. E-SIGs are hosted on the British Mensa website at www.mensa.org.uk. in the ‘Members only’ section.
