The Sika Solution

Sikabond®-T35 one component polyurethane was selected as the high performance elastic bonding system for the installation of the luxury hardwood floors, due to its fast application on site and high elongation in service, which allows the wood floor to move naturally without loss of bond. It also helps to accommodate minor uneveness.

To prevent delays or problems with residual moisture, the concrete surface was impregnated and sealed with SikaPrimer® MB. This epoxy resin based material controls and regulates moisture, plus it consolidates and improves the substrate, thus also improving the bond characteristics.

Sika Products used

A total of more than 7 tons of SikaPrimer® MB was used to impregnate and seal the floors, then more than 10 tonnes of Sikabond®-T35 elastic adhesive were used to bond the tongued and grooved, 20 mm thick, solid wood planks that were 1.2 m long and 90 mm wide, in position.

Description of the Project

The Casa Margaritas is a new apartment building in Guatemala City, consisting of twin 16 storey towers and located in the modern residen-tial and commercial district known as Las Margaritas. This develop-ment contains 96 luxury apartments each with a floor area of more than 250 m2, many also have a magnificent view in this superb loca-tion. There are 4 aparments on each floor of each of the two towers, where a total of more than 12,000 m2 of premium quality exotic solid hardwood floors were specified to be installed.

Requirements

The design and specification of the wood flooring in the Casa Margaritas demanded the highest quality installation and finishing for all of the apartment living areas (sitting room, dining room and the bedrooms). The specified wood was Cumarú (Dipteryx Odorata), an exotic South American hardwood, selected not only for its appearance, but also its stiffness, resistance to traffic and the additional advantage of low linear shrinkage, which make it ideal for the variable climate in Guatemala City.

The installation also had to be made on new concrete floors without the possibility of delay.

Casa Margarita, es un proyecto de dos torres de departamentos de lujo en la ciudad de Guatemala. Ubicado en el área conocida como las Mar-garitas. Es un edificio que cuenta con 96 departamentos de lujo con un área de pisos de más de 250 m2 con acabados de lujo, excelentes vistas y una magnífica ubicación. Cada piso cuenta con 4 Apartamentos en cada una de las torres, casi 12,000 m2 de pisos de madera preparados para ser instalados

El piso de madera que exigía el diseño de Casa Margaritas, debia tener la más alta calidad, no solo en materia prima sino también en acaba-dos, para los ambientes sociales del departamento (Sala, comedor y recámaras). La madera recomendada fue Cumarú (Dipteryx Odorata), una madera exótica suramericana, fué seleccionada debido a lo elegante de su color, rigidez, resistencia al tráfico y la ventaja de que presenta con-tracciones lineales bajas, lo que la hace ideal para variaciones climáticas de la Ciudad de Guatemala.

La madera debía quedar adherida a la superficie de concreto, en el menor tiempo posible.

Sikabond®-T35 poliuretano de un componente que fue selecio-nado por ser un sistema elástico de pegado de alto rendimiento para la instalación de pisos de madera de lujo, debido a su rápida aplicación en el sitio y su elasticidad, que permite que la madera del piso se mueva naturalmente sin afectar la pega del mismo. Además ayuda a acomodar desniveles mínimos.Para prevenir retrasos o problemas con humedad residual, la superfi-cie del concreto fue imprimada y sellada con SikaPrimer®-MB. Esta resina con base epóxica controla y regula la humedad, consolida y mejora el sustrato, al mismo tiempo maximiza las características del pegado.

Un total de mas de 7 toneladas de SikaPrimer®-MB se usaron para imprimar y sellar los pisos y mas de 10 toneladas del adhesi-vo elástico para pegar Sikabond®-T35 para pegar la planchas machimbreadas de 20mm de espesor, de 1.2 metros de largo y 90 mm de ancho, ya colocadas.

Conclusions

Sika’s high performance elastic wood floor bonding systems have been proven all over the world as they provide a safe and secure installation, they increase water resistance and insulation, plus they reduce noise and vibration because of their dampening effect.

The use of Sika technology also reduces installation time and allows large areas to be installed quickly and to compensate for any minor substrate unevenness.
