Taking a Shortcut by Using Hot Melt Adhesives

Pressure sensitive hot melt adhesives (PSA) tapes are widely used in the domestic appliances industry for quick attachment of decorative panels, touch screens, covers, trims and many other applications.

Sika believes that there is a more cost efficient solution to tapes by removing the carrier and applying the hot melt adhesive directly to the components.

This has several technical advantages and brings significant cost savings:

One Component Versus two Component Adhesives

The chemical reaction in a one component adhesive is initiated by moisture, taken either from the substrate where the adhesive is applied, or from the atmospheric air. The adhesive bead starts to cure from the outside at a typical speed of 3 to 5 mm per day, depending on ambient conditions. This process can be accelerated by applying heat or extra moisture.

Two component adhesives start curing when mixed together and the speed of this reaction can be tailored to suit almost any particular process need. Fast assembly lines will use extremely fast curing systems, while manual or semi automated operations will use products with longer process time to minimize the risk of wasting adhesive.

The decision whether to use a one component or a two component adhesive depends on many different para-meters. Sika can assist to evaluate your production requirements and helps you select the most cost effective solution.

Two Component Adhesives One Component Adhesives

Fast curing, parts can be moved within seconds. Curing speed depends on ambient conditions, climate chamber may be required.

Process speed predictable and constant. Suitable for discontinous operations.

Mixing with automatic equipment required. No mixing required.

From Mechanical Fixation to Bonding

The heavy counter weight for washing machines are typically mechanically connected on the drum assembly. The mass of the counter weight has had to increase due to higher spin speeds of washing machines. Conventional joining methods such as screwing, bolting or welding leads to high stress concentrations in the connections between the counter weight and the drum assembly, that can form cracks either in the drum or the concrete counter weight.

To ensure a durable connection and maximize the service life of the materials, the parts should be bonded in order to distribute the stresses evenly throughout the assembly.

Sika adhesives are a powerful tool not only to increase performance of the detergent solution tub assembly but also to convert a semi automated and partially manual process into a fully automated robotic line.

The major benefits are:

• Substantialcostsavingsintheoverallprocess

• Fullyautomatedhighspeedproduction

• Increasedperformanceandlonglifecycleofthedrumassembly
