Production TechnologiesSika is one of the most experienced singleply membrane producers with track recordof more than 50 years. Our productionincorporates most efficient and proventechnologies such as:Calendering – means to roll out with heat.Production line consists of several pairsof heated rollers that press the polymercompound into a sheet.Extrusion – a process by which adoughlike polymer compound is forcedthrough a wideslot die by a slowly andcontinuously rotating screw, emerging as acontinuous sheetSpread Coating – a method by which aliquid polymer compound is spread acrossa support layer.Extrusion-coating – a combination ofextrusion and coating

Lacquer, Surface Texturing

Sika single ply PVC membranes aremanufactured on extrusion, calandered andspread coating production lines. This widest range of production possibilitiesopens unique flexibility and membrane choiceto our clients – different colours and surfaces, thicknesses and sheet widths, reinforcementsand laminated felts.Sika is the only company which unites all theseproduction technologies for PVC membranes“under one roof”.Sika single ply FPO membranes are manufactured on extrusion coating production line. This method was specially designed for FPOmembranes production by Sika engineersand gathers positive sides of both processes.FPO membrane layers are extruded in semi-liquid state allowing better embedment ofreinforcement. This unique technology allowsus to provide clients with most advanced andtechnically developed FPO membranes.

Sika introduced a special technology of lacquercoating for PVC membranes that seals thesurface of the membrane to protect it fromexternal influences. Lacquer prevents plasticizermigration and extends service life of the roof.

Sika has wide possibilities of membranestexturing for various purposes such as anembossed matte finish, which providesa safe nonslip surface.

This unique MTC technology was developedwith use of own custom pre-polymers andgives liquid polyurethane moisture triggeredcuring. It means no CO2 outgassing in contactwith water while curing and as a result farbetter tolerance to moisture than standardPUs: MTC can resist rain and moisture withinminutes after its application.Specially designed reinforcement is activatedin the MTC coating allowing easy applicationeven on complicated details.

Sika Product:SikaRoof® MTC Systems withSikalastic® 6th Series

Sika’s polyurethane coatings are producedusing automated plants with electronicallymeasured and dosed raw materials in stainlesssteel dissolving mixers. Each production unithas a powerful motor, its own heating andcooling system and an automatic dischargingand cleaning system. Products are thenpackaged in steel drums.

Fast Installation

The Sika roofing product range includessheet membranes with embossed surfacesto provide slip resistance. Different degreesof slip resistance can be also achieved withSika liquid applied membranes by broad-casting with selected grades of quartz sand.

As bitumen has been used as a traditionalroofing material for many years, it is oftenstill present on existing roofs to be refur-bished or upgraded in terms of waterproof-ing, fire or insulation. For a fast and securesolution bitumen compatibility is a majorrequirement. Sika provides systems whichare bitumen-resistant and can be used inalmost any refurbishment situation.

Fire resistance requirements can be veryindividual and dependent on the type ofconstruction and use of the building. If theroofing membrane is the top roof surface, thenthe membrane material must generally beclassified as self-extinguishing. Sika roofingmaterials are all designed to comply with thisand all relevant international and local buildingregulations in terms of fire.

Light, especially energy-rich ultraviolet light, has an ageing effect on roof membranes thatcan eventually result in surface cracking anddegradation. Sika roofing membranes forexposed roofs are all more than sufficientlyUV stabilized against this to perform for thelong term, even in extreme climates andlocations with high UV light exposure.

Increasingly, roofing systems are beingused for areas exposed to pedestrian andvehicular traffic, i.e. on roof terraces or carparking areas. If the roofing membrane isthe top surface for traffic, it must withstandthis abraison and wear without additionalprotection. It also has to be slip-resistantand may need different colours for linemarking etc. Sika liquid applied membranesystems provide full service trafficability forpedestrians and / or vehicles as required.

The weather around the world providesdifferent climatic conditions in which roofingsystems have to perform and resistanceto minus temperatures is one of the mainrequirements here. All membranes fromSika stay flexible in cold within their statedperformance limits. Some Sika roofingsystems have the advantage that they canbe installed at temperatures below zero.

Membranes used under ballast must alsowithstand penetration from the roots ofplants. Roof gardens and other green roofsobviously have a particular requirement forthis, not only from the membrane, but also attheir welded seams, connections andterminations. Sika single ply and liquidapplied membranes for ballasted roofsystems all resist root penetration andare treated to be resistant against micro-organisms, or they are inherent by fullyresistant.

Sika roof waterproofing membranes and allof the ancillary roofing products are speciallydesigned to withstand sudden changes oftemperature and weather conditions. Theywill not be damaged by extended or suddenthermal changes in cold, heat, snow, hail, rain, etc.

Installation time is always an important issueand cost factor for roofing systems. Sika hasdeveloped many special roofing systems andancillary products which allow extremelyrapid and cost effective installation.

Crack Bridging Ability

Seamless Waterproofing

Superior aesthetic appearance, regardlessof the roof shape, or with no penetration ofthe roof deck, is often a requirement for bothnew and refurbishment projects. With Sikafully adhered systems the membrane is fullybonded to the substrate, therefore it canmeet these high aesthetic and performancerequirements reliably and with low mainte-nance costs.

1-C Sika liquid applied membranes areprobably the easiest to install. They areapplied ’direct from the can’ and do notrequire mixing with other components.

Sika has developed membranes whichare waterproof, but with excellent vapourdiffusion properties. This allows any moisturein the structure below to evaporate.

Sika membranes are supplied in severalstandard colours, some in an extensive range.Special colours can also be made to order orcolour matched to a client’s requirements.

Sika liquid applied membranes can beapplied by brush and roller. This applicationis easy and does not require investment inexpensive application equipment.

Loose laying of the flexible membrane andits ancillary materials is the main methodestablished to build-up a roof deck andwaterproofing system. It allows free air flowto ventilate the thermal insulation and italso helps to compensate for the structure’smovement. The membrane must then bemechanically fixed or ballasted for restraintagainst wind uplift.

The Sika liquid applied membranes inparticular can provide outstanding crack-bridging properties, with high flexibility andelasticity – even at low temperatures

If the membrane is installed as the top layerof the roof, wind uplift will occur throughwind suction and pressure. The membranemust therefore be restrained against winduplift and the most cost effective methodof doing this is by mechanical fasteninginto the support structure. Sika systems aredesigned to withstand wind loads using themost efficient fixings.

A mechanical fastening system may not bepossible due to unacceptable drilling noise forthe fixings, contamination through the deck,or due to the structural design itself. All ofthese difficulties and their potential costs canbe overcome by using Sika adhered, ballastedor liquid applied membrane systems.

If the membrane is to be used in an exposedsituation, but mechanical fixing is notdesirable for technical or other reasons, all layers of the system build-up must bebonded to the substrate below. In Sikapartially adhered systems the liquid adhesiveis applied on the substrate in beads or strips. This provides fast cost effective installationwith low adhesive consumption.

Sometimes roofing materials not only havean important waterproofing function, but theymust also meet high design and architecturalrequirements. Sika has developed severaladvanced systems suitable for installationover complex roof shapes with good lookingtop surfaces, i.e. including smooth surfaces, standing seam metal roof imitation and otherspecial profiles, etc.

The Sika liquid applied membranes provideseamless waterproofing over the entire roofsurface. In addition to technical advantages, itcan also create an excellent visual appearance.

Environment and Sustainability

Embodied Energy

Embodied energy is the measurement of theamount of energy required to produce a tonneor square metre of a product, it can also beused to measure the carbon embodied withina product Generally the lower the embodiedenergy and carbon levels, the better a productis for the environment

All Sika roofing membranes have lowembodied energy, contributing less toglobal warming than many alternative roofingtechnologies

Recycling

Sika has proactively recycled factory wasteback into production since 1960 Whereverpossible, higher quantities of production andpost-consumer membrane are recycled intonew products, such as Roof Protection Sheetsand Walkway Pads Today walkway pads, manufactured in Europesince 2000, provide tough, durable solutionfor pedestrian access on exposed roofs andat the same time they are produced fromalmost 100% recycled material The only non-recycled product being less than 1% carbonblack that is added for colour consistency Sika recyclate is also sourced from existingmembrane roofs when they are removedto enable the client to thermally upgradethe building, a common practice in WesternEurope This process is managed through thecompany’s involvement with the RoofCollectscheme operated by Vynyl 2010

General Description

Sika has developed solutions which canhelp ensure that the roof creates minimalimpact on the environment whilst meeting thefunctional requirements of clients, specifiers, contractors and nature Roofing membranes / products are notonly manufactured in an ISO 14001:2000accredited production facility they have a lowembodied energy and long life expectancies

The following important environmental andsustainability aspects are always taken intoaccount in Sika roofing systems:

RecyclingEmbodied EnergyDurabilitySun light reflectivity

Page 65: Sika Technology andConcepts forRoofing · Sika is the only companywhich unites all these production technologies for PVC membranes “under one roof”. Sika single ply FPO membranes

65

Durability

Long service life is a key element of sustain-ability, the longer something lasts the lessdamage it should do to the environment inuse.

Sika roofing systems has been tested foraging and life expectancy by differentInstitutes and organizations with outstandingresults.

As an example the British Board of Agrément(BBA) certifies a standard 1.2mm thickSarnafil G/S membrane to have a lifeexpectancy “in excess of 35 years”.

Sun Reflectivity

The benefits of solar reflective materials andcolours are well known and understood inwarm climates around the world. With urbandensity increasing, the “heat island” (Albedo)affect is impacting on cities at an ever-increasing rate.

A significant contribution to reducing theAlbedo affect can be made by simplyreplacing dark roof surfaces with a lightercolour, ideally white – Sika roofing systemsinclude solutions which allow the reflection ofup to 83% of the heat in sunlight.

Ronnen Levinson & Hashem Akbari’sDecember 2007 report “Potential EnergySavings and Environmental Benefits of CoolRoofs on Commercial Buildings” demon-strated that by changing from a relativelylow solar reflectivity light grey membrane, toa higher reflectivity white membrane, largeenergy cost savings could be made. Thereforesignificantly reducing emissions of carbondioxide (CO2), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), sulphurdioxide (SO2) and mercury (Hg).

Welding Procedures – Single Ply Membranes

Manual / Hand Welding

Manual hot air welding creates a securewatertight membrane, particularly aroundcomplex or difficult details where access forautomatic machine welding is not possible

Manual hot air welding is carried out inthree stages:Spot tacking the membrane sheets inoverlaps to prevent the membrane sheetsfrom moving during the welding processWelding of the rear seam to preventany migration of hot air during the mainwelding operationMain welding of the front seam

When welding Sika FPO membranesadditional preparation of the seam areais required (using Sarnafil T Prep)

Equipment and tools:Welder Leister Triac PID,20 and 40 mm nozzles,Silicon and teflon preasure rollers (pleaserefer to the respective Sika membraneapplication manuals and MethodStatements for details of all of the specificequipment and tools required)

The seam overlaps to be welded must be atleast 50 mm wide and both surfaces must bedry and free from dust or dirt. Dirt or contami-nation must be removed, usually with waterand a cloth (Trocal L100 Cleaner in case ofheavy soiling). The minimum width of thewelded area of the overlap must be 30 mm.A mini-jet brush head or a welding brushcharged with Welding Agent is introducedbetween the two surfaces of the overlap anddrawn along the seam for about 400 mm,being followed by light pressure from theoperative’s other hand. The objective is towet both surfaces simultaneously and thenpress together firmly.

In every roofing system being installed, the Sika PVC and FPO single ply membranes must always be securely welded together withspecial welding equipment using hot air. The following methods are used for welding – hand welding and automatic welding.

Cold Welding HomogeneousSika-Trocal® S Membrane withWelding Agent

Page 83: Sika Technology andConcepts forRoofing · Sika is the only companywhich unites all these production technologies for PVC membranes “under one roof”. Sika single ply FPO membranes

83

Automatic Welding Automatic welding equipment is used to weldmembrane seams safely and efficiently, withhigh quality and reliability, particularly onlarge flat areas. The welding and equipmentparameters always need to be adapted tothe site conditions. The welding machinesdeveloped for use with with Sika membranesallow adjustment to suit almost any weatherconditions, including high humidity or forwelding in the wet and in very cold weather, even at temperatures below 0 °C.

Equipment:Sarnamatic 661 PlusLeister Varimat

Seam Control Every seam that is welded manually or auto-matically must be checked and tested whenwelding is finished to confirm its integrityand high quality workmanship. If there areany voids or misses, then the seam has to bemade good by additional manual welding.Sika provides detailed guidelines for installingall of our membrane roofs. These includeMethod Statements and Application Manualswhich contain full information regarding all ofthe installation methods and the correctexecution of details, such as those atterminations and upstands etc. They alsoinclude our recommendations and usefulchecklists for site safety and quality controlprocedures.

Application Procedures – Single Ply Membranes

Application of MechanicallyFastened Single Ply MembranesSystemsSika single ply membranes are mechanicallyfastened to the roof deck against wind upliftforces, using single fasteners or fasteningbars with their fixings drilled into the deck orinto the support structure according to theengineers requirements.

Spot fasteningIn spot fastening systems the membranes arefixed using steel screws (Sarnafast® 4.8or 6.3 mm in diameter) with pressure platesor plastic tubes anchored into the deck.Adjacent membrane sheets are overlappedand the seams are hot air welded. This canbe an efficient solution that allows very fast, cost effective installation.

Linear (Sarnabar) fasteningIn the Sarnabar system (fastening bars), thesheets are loose laid and secured using thefastening bars anchored to the deck. Thebars are then covered with additional stripsof the same membrane and welded to thewaterproofing layer. This system provideshigh resistance to wind uplift because loadsare transferred through the fastening bars tothe supporting roof structure.

The membrane is adhered to the full surfaceof the substrate, giving the highest qualityof aesthetic appearance. This type ofapplication can be carried out in 2 ways:Contact adhered with non-felt backedmembranesWet-bed adhered with felt backedmembranes

Fully Adhered

Installation of Adhered Systems

Partially AdheredThe partially adhered system is used with feltbacked membranes and Sika-Trocal®

C 300 adhesive, ideally suited for uselarge industrial roofs. For very large roofs anadhesive application trolley cart is anotherpractical Sika innovation.

Self AdheredSelf adhered membranes have a factorymanufactured adhesive film on the backside of the membrane which is rolled outand bonded directly to the substrate whenit’s release liner is removed.

Contact adhered:Sarnacol ® 2170 is applied to bothsurfaces, the membrane and substrateInstant adhesion takes place when the twosurfaces come into contact

Wet-bed adhered:Sarnacol ® 2142S or Sarnacol®

2170 is applied to the substrate onlyImmediately roll out the felt backedmembrane over the wet adhesive bed

Liquid Sika-Trocal® C 300 adhesiveis applied directly from the tin onto thesubstrate in stripsA fine mist of water is sprayed over theadhesive to start the curing processThe adhesive strips are then spread out toa thin film with a squeegeeThe membrane is unrolled and immediatelypressed firmly into the wet adhesive film

A Primer can be required on difficultsubstratesThe membrane with self adhesive backingis unrolled and properly positionedThe protective film on the adhesive isremoved and at the same time themembrane is pressed firmly on to thesubstrateInstant adhesion takes place, noadjustment is possible after application

Page 86: Sika Technology andConcepts forRoofing · Sika is the only companywhich unites all these production technologies for PVC membranes “under one roof”. Sika single ply FPO membranes

86

Roller Application 1-C PU liquid roofing membranes are mainlyapplied by roller and brush (brushes arealways used for detailing)

The application is done in several stages:First the base coat of liquid PU membraneis applied directly on the prepared / cleanedsubstrate

Then the reinforcement material (e g Sikalastic® Reemat) is rolled out andbedded into the wet base coat Thereinforcement material is always fullyembedded into the liquid membrane

After the first coat is cured the top coat ofliquid membrane is applied over it

Tools & equipment:Rollers and brushes

1-C PU Spray Application In addition to roller application the 1-C PUliquid applied membranes can also be appliedwith airless spray equipment This methodis used for the SikaRoof® MTC 8System and top coat applications in otherSikaRoof® MTC Systems Two sprayapplied coats are still the minimumrequirement to ensure the correct thicknessis applied

Equipment:The spray equipment should have thefollowing capabilities:

min pressure: 220 barmin output: 5 1 l/minmin ø nozzle: 0 83mm (0 033 inch)
