Influence of Cracks[3]
• Objective of the Study:• To show the influence of crack in the effectiveness
of hydrophobic treatment using different types of product (high active content silane liquid or cream, low active content silane/siloxane)
• Summary of the results: Importance of the type of product used in the durability
behaviour Best performance achieved with cream Silane No long term protection achieved with low active
silane/siloxane Effective protection achieved even if the treatment occurs
before the crack appears

Standard Tests (Alberta B388)Requirement (example)
Sealer Type Water uptake in % to a control non treated
Before Abrasion After Abrasion
Type 1a 82,5% 75%
Type 1b - 86%
Type 1c - 85%*
Note*: 144 grams abrasion instead of usual 72 grams for type 1a & 1b

StandardsCanada (Alberta B388):
Requirements: Reduction of water uptake after surface abrasion Reduction of water uptake after alkali exposure Water vapour transmission Etc.

In general, there are three different levels of these Sika protection systems:
System 1:Durable concrete protection
System 2:Durable concrete andreinforcement protection
System 3:High performance protectionfor extreme conditions

Standard Tests (Alberta B388)Classification:
Type 1: Penetrating sealers for use of traffic bearing exposed to abrasion
Type 1a: for sheltered conditions – relative moisture content of substrate not
exceeding 55% Type 1b: for outdoor condition where the relative
moisture content of substrate not exceeding 70%
Type 1c: low VOC, high performance. For application in outdoor
conditions to new bridges and overlays cast with low water cement ratio
(0,30 – 0,45) where the relative moisture content is maximum 80%
