Rotary encoders:Precise measuring technologywith defined values
SIKO has united the rotary encoder andthe electronic display range under thename of RotoLine. There are the follow-ing four product categories, dependingon the measuring principle employed intheir typical applications:
Magnetic rotary encoders
Optical rotary encoders
Geared potentiometers
Electronic Displays
The comprehensive SIKO product know-how permits a wide selection of typesranging from inexpensive rotary encod-ers in miniature format with simpler me-chanical designs to sophisticated, highresolution products in housings madeof plastic or tough die-cast aluminum.
SIKO rotary encoders are essential fortracking lengths, angles and speed inmachines and systems. With a host ofdifferent designs and customized ap-plication specifications, rotary encodersserve as the basis for robust measuring
processes for a wide range of differentmechanical engineering applications.
Mounted on a shaft or spindle, they trackmeasured values as incremental or abso-lute signals. The measuring principle caneither be optical, magnetic or based onan electrical resistance (geared poten-tiometer). The information obtained isthen available for higher-level control-lers or direct display on indicators.
Magnetic rotary encodersMagnetic or optical measurement? Underextreme industrial conditions the mag-netic SIKO rotary encoders ensure par-ticularly error-safe measurement.
The reason: On magnetic rotary encoders,a sensor tracks the number of north-south poles of a magnetic ring mounteddirectly on the hollow or solid shaft. Asthe measurement principle is based onthe alternating pole forces of magnetismand is therefore not dependent on anunobstructed line of vision or systemcleanliness, these rotary encoders areparticularly suitable for applications in
which optical length, angle and speedmeasurement can produce faulty results.
RotoLineProduct Overview
Reliability and precision are redefined, because this SIKO development makesuse of the fascinating advantages of atechnology with its resolution, scanningreliability and robustness that opens upcompletely new applications for thesecompact measuring systems reaching far
beyond those of optical rotary encoders.

Optical rotary encoders
Optical rotary encoders use light as amedium in a similar manner to a lightbarrier. A code disk with a pattern ofopaque and transparent segments rotatesin a gap between the light source andsensor. Depending on their transmissivity, this disk either prevents or enables thepassage of the light beam to the sensoron the opposite side. The sensor itself ispart of the electronic evaluation system, which derives electrical pulses from theopto-electronic scanning system on thebasis of which the length, angle or speedinformation can be calculated.
Both optical incremental and absolutevalue encoders are available in bothhollow or solid shaft versions. Standardinterfaces or individual field bus linkswith freely programmable parameters areincluded in the basic standard productfeatures. The standard versions of theoptical rotary encoders can be exchangedone to one with the magnetic rotary en-coders.
Geared potentiometers
With this absolute measuring method, angles or lengths are tracked by a com-bination of single or multiple coil poten-tiometers via a gear unit. The positionof the potentiometer provides analogsignals for follow-up controllers or elec-tronic displays when motion occurs.
Transducers ensure loss-free signaltransmission and prevent line losses. Anoptional cam controller is available forcontrolling switching operations.
Electronic Displays
SIKO electronic displays are multifunctio-nal, electronic measurement solutions. They make easy work of realizing the dis-play of distance and angle information, revolutions, speed or number of pieces.

Time for a new generation time for new standards
This SIKO development with its inde-structible, magnetic scanning tech-nology is suitable for completely newmechanical engineering concepts. Bothresolution and scanning reliability aswell as the robustness of the compactmeasuring systems cover application ar-eas which by far exceed those of opticalrotary encoders.
How it works
With a magnetic ring[1] mounted on ahollow or solid shaft, the rotation of ma-chine shafts or spindles can be transmit-ted to special electronic sensors[2]. The
The signal path:A sensor [2] tracks the nort h-south poles [1] of the spe-cially magnetized ferrite ring and generates pulses [3] which are processed
in real time and made available as digital signals.
magnetized pole length of the magneticring is converted by a customized evalu-ation electronic system into up to 4096pulses per rotation. These incrementalcounting pulses are available assquarewave signals[3] and can therefore beevaluated by any electronic countingsystem. Sealing of the electronic compo-nents also permits safe operation, evenwith fluid media.
To be absolutely on the safe side,application-proven incremental technol-ogy is also used in our absolute multiturnencoders. Combined with battery-freemultiturn technology, this tried and test-
ed solution enables everyrotation to be registered- even in a currentlessstate. Thus, in magneticangle coding, a diametralmagnet generates themultiturn signal requiredto record full rotations of
the encoder. Computed together withthe high-resolution singleturn signal, this produces an absolute value whichprovides the correct position value at alltimes.

Application areas
Magnetic encoders were developed forwet or humid and heavily soiled operat-ing conditions and where machine vibra-tions make precise operation difficult.
These non-contacting measuring encod-ers almost always feel at home even ifthey are in contact with corrosive solu-tions such as saline water or in heated, oily environments. In the food, packag-ing, energy generation and wood pro-cessing sectors or for passenger trans-port and general mechanical engineeringapplications, optical measuring systemsincreasingly reach insurmountable limitsdue to their basic functional design.
For this reason magnetic encoders arepredestined for a large number of differ-ent applications
Sheet metal processing with punching
and forming equipmentLifting and elevator equipment
Packaging and food industries
Chemical and pharmaceutical indus-
triesEnergy generation
As well as in all applications where
precision measurement is required un-der extremely difficult conditions
[1] Die for metal processing [2] Cutting in the wood, metal and stone processingindustry. [3] Tire balancing system. [4] Elevator equipment. [5] Rough wood process-ing: SIKO magnetic encoders are not affected by pronounced vibration or shocks, agreasy environment or coarse or fine dust, either wet or dry, and they also wit hstandextreme temperature fluctuations.

The incremental, opto-electronic scanning principleusing an incremental encoder as an example
Sophisticated technology forhigh-resolution applications
Optical encoders have an excellentcost-benefit ratio. This fully developedtechnology offers robust and well-sealedhousings, permitting reliable measure-ment with very high resolutions in alarge number of industrial applications.
The core of optical encoder technologyis precisely segmented code discs withpatterns in a circular arrangement. Wellprotected against external influences, the transparent and opaque sectionsalternate at defined intervals, dividing abeam of light directed onto a sensor intodigital yes and no counting units.
Signal sequences are generated, whichform the basis for calculating the respec-tive rotation angle. Combined with anintelligent follow-up electronic system, reliable calculation of angles, lengthsand even speeds is possible.
As two signal sequences A and B, offsetby 90, are scanned with each rotation, the electronic system also detects theclockwise/counter-clockwise directionof rotation due to the phase offset, withthe advantage of enhancing the mechan-ical and electrical safety and reliabilityof the system.
The hollow shaft incremental encodersare simply slipped onto the shaft or spin-dle. Solid shaft encoders are mountedwith a flange and a connecting coupling.
Incremental encoders
During incremental processes, an opto-electronic scanning unit tracks theuniform-incremental dividing pattern ofthe code disc and converts these into anumber of electronic pulses that is pro-portional to the rotation. In the event ofa voltage drop, however, the measuredvalue is lost the incremental encoderrequires a reference operation.

Applications
Optical encoders are the right choicewhen it comes to applications with veryhigh resolution requirements. Ideal ap-plications are, for example, in wood, metal, printing and packaging industry. The devices tirelessly track the complexand highly dynamic motion of robot armsand do not require maintenance. Theyperform excellently on linear shafts, during angle adjustment operations andmonitoring synchronized operations. These encoders are reliable and offer aquick return on investment due to theirtrack-proven specifications. Even load
limits determined by the measuringprinciple can be almost completely elimi-nated by effective installation on themachine.

Areas of application
A large number of designs and variabletechnical features open up a wide rangeof applications for the robust gearedpotentiometers. The simple installationof the hollow shaft versions also ensuresshort setup times and simple retrofitting.
SIKO encoders are used during the initialstage of cutting tree trunks in the woodindustry, because they can withstand thehigh mechanical stresses in this environ-ment. Accuracy and reliability are alsoadvantages of the SIKO encoders in theconveying technology and automationsectors. Together with geared potentiom-eters, they are also indispensable in thepaper and printing industry. Here theyare used in multi-color printing pressesfor register adjustment to ensure exactalignment of the rollers.

Gear ratio calculation
Due to the variety of different gear ratios and the use of 1-coilor 10-coil potentiometers, all measuring ranges can be coveredindividually. The minimum ratio is calculated with the followingformula.
The selection of the gear ratio depends on the maximummeasurement path, i.e., the total number of rotations. A fric-tion clutch between the gear unit and potentiometer (on allexcept GP02) prevents the mechanical destruction of the poten-tiometer.
ExampleA measuring path of n = 500 rotations is achieved by the useof a 10-coil potentiometer and a gear ratio of i = 50 (refer toformula).
Note1-coil potentiometers have a measuring range of 340 and do
not have a mechanical stop (type 01).10-coil potentiometers cover a measuring range of 3600
and are equipped with a mechanical stop (type 02/03).10-coil potentiometers are protected against mechanical de-
struction by a friction clutch (type 02/03).
Available ratios
The available ratios are shown for the individual products inthe ordering table. Other ratios, also intermediate values, areavailable upon request.

Switching cam function diagram
GP43 and GP44 are available with up to three cam switches tocontrol additional switching operations.
Switching angleCam switches are available in three different switching angleversions (refer to table). Types 1, 2 and 3 are standard productsfor various control functions. Individual switching angles arepossible upon request.
Interfaces
With a transducer the SIKO geared potentiometers are availablewith various analog outputs:
Potentiometer output0 1 k, 0 5 k and 0 10 k
Current outputAll GPs are also optionally available with a 4 ... 20 mA transduc-
er. When ordering always state the direction of rotation code, either i or e. Advantage: Long line lengths are possible andcable breaks are detected immediately.
Voltage outputA stable voltage of 0 ... 10 V is output via an external powersupply depending on the potentiometer setting.
Transducer adjustment
On the potentiometers with transducers the measurement pathcan be modified with so-called tr imming potentiometers.
Transducer MWIThe potentiometer resistance is converted into a current of 4... 20 mA (standard value). These values can be adapted to theactual beginning and end settings of the application with twotrimming potentiometers Po and Pe.
Transducer MWUThe potentiometer resistance is converted into a voltage of 0 ...10 V DC. With a trimming potentiometer Pe the end value can be
adapted to the actual end position of the application.
