2013 Pertussis in the Community

• CDC reports that nationwide pertussis is at a 50 year high

• Number of cases in Washington is back to 2011 levels

• 49 cases reported in Spokane County so far; 1997-2011 we averaged 13.5 cases

• Immunization is the key to curbing this disease

• Infants under 1 year of age are the group with the most cases

• New recommendation for pregnant women is to get vaccinated with every pregnancy

• 61 percent of adults don’t know when they last received vaccine against pertussis*

• 20 percent of adults reported receiving vaccination in the last 10 years*

• Community outreach to recruit organizations to help spread the word (providers, schools, community organizations)

• Tools and resources to assist partners in spreading the word
