I have seen Silent Night three times over the past three years. My first viewing was the broadcast of the world premiere in Minnesota. The second was the subsequent production at Opera Philadelphia, and most recently, just this past October, I saw the work at the Wexford Festival. The power of this work has moved audiences at each performance and I expect you to have a similar response at today’s performance as well. It is a work which will stay with you. In preparation for our production of this work, I have had the great pleasure of getting to know composer Kevin Puts and librettist Mark Campbell. Their talents and contributions to 21st Century opera will be enduring. Silent Night has entered the repertoire at what I would describe, in opera time, as lightning speed, which speaks forcibly to the quality and strength of this work. You are in for an unforgettable experience. I would also like to acknowledge the Minnesota Opera and their very talented team for their leadership in the field by commissioning and producing this work. Let me encourage you to make a trip to Minnesota in the next couple of weeks, when this same team of Kevin Puts, Mark Campbell and the Minnesota Opera will present another world premiere – The Manchurian Candidate – which opens on March 7, 2015.

Finally, I wish to thank Dr. Matthew Naylor and the National World War I Museum at Liberty Memorial for their friendship and partnership as we have scheduled various events throughout the year to commemorate the Centennial of WWI. We are indeed fortunate to live in such a rich community where not only the Museum but some very special funders have helped make this production possible.

Heartfelt thanks,

As I crossed the plaza to the Ordway Theater in St. Paul, Minnesota on a snowy November evening in 2011, my expectations were already heightened. The advance news of a new opera receiving its world premiere in my home state was promising, and the dramatization of the remarkable Christmas Truce of 1914 struck me as a topic of important significance.

New operas are being written all the time, but it takes a tricky mixture of gifted and inspired composer, wise as well as gifted librettist and great story to turn notes and words on a page into a great work that speaks clearly to people, moves them emotionally and inspires them. Coupled with a preexisting film script (Joyeux Noël), the creators brought forth a work on their first try that accomplished what would-be opera composers strive for their entire careers.

I was elated but not surprised several months later when composer Kevin Puts won the 2012 Pulitzer Prize for Music for his opera Silent Night.

I am grateful to our many supporters who have helped bring this remarkable physical production from the Minnesota Opera to the Muriel Kauffman Theatre. I also extend my deepest admiration and gratitude to my colleague to the north, artistic director Dale Johnson, the brainchild behind this project.

And what will the future be for Silent Night and its composer? By the end of this spring, the opera will have received 28 performances of two different physical productions in 8 different cities in 3 countries. In the opera world, this is what you call a hit. In addition, as you read this, the Minnesota Opera is in final rehearsals for the world premiere of Mr. Puts’s second opera, The Manchurian Candidate, based on the novel by Richard Condon. I believe we have another new artist who will add his contributions to our beloved art form in the years to come.

Sincerely,

Ward Holmquist,Artistic Director

SynopSiSprologue

Summer, 1914 – War is declared. At a Berlin opera house, the news disrupts lives of international opera singers Anna Sørensen and Nikolaus Sprink. In Scotland, dreams of heroism inspire William; he insists his younger brother Jonathan enlist with him. In Paris, Madeleine is angry with her husband Audebert for leaving while she is pregnant. The men prepare to leave for war.

Act iA battlefield in Belgium, near the French border, around ChristmasScene 1 – A horrific battle is fought between the two sides. An attempt by the French and Scottish soldiers to infiltrate the German bunker fails. William is shot, and Jonathan must leave his brother behind to die.

Scene 2 – Lt. Gordon assesses the casualties. Fr. Palmer attempts to offer solace to Jonathan in prayer. A French General reprimands Lt. Audebert for surrendering. The General leaves and Audebert laments the loss of his wife’s photograph and tallies the casualties in the last battle. He sings of needing sleep, a sentiment echoed by the soldiers. As it starts to snow, the soldiers begin to sleep. Nikolaus reveals to an imagined Anna his despair about war.

Scene 3 – In the German bunker, crates have arrived with Christmas trees from the Kronprinz. Lt. Horstmayer criticizes the Kronprinz for not sending more useful gifts. Nikolaus is ordered to sing at the chalet of the Kronprinz, along with Anna. Nikolaus departs, excited to see Anna again. The French soldiers receive crates of wine, sausages and chocolates. Ponchel brings coffee to Audebert and gives him a haircut. Scottish soldiers receive crates of whiskey. Jonathan writes to his mother, not mentioning his brother’s death.

Scene 4 – At the chalet of the Kronprinz, Anna and Nikolaus perform a duet. After, they meet on a terrace. Anna notices the effect war has had on his spirit. When Nikolaus says he must return, she decides to accompany him.

Scene 5 – Gueusselin volunteers to infiltrate the German bunker with grenades. Scottish soldiers drink whiskey and play a bagpipe; Fr. Palmer sings a ballad and men in other bunkers hear the song. Nikolaus arrives; soldiers greet him and are amazed by Anna’s presence. Nikolaus sings a Christmas song. Midway through, the bagpiper begins to accompany. Emboldened, Nikolaus stands atop the bunker raising a Christmas tree as

Page 35: Silent Night (2015) Program

a gesture of friendship. Against the protestations of their superiors, soldiers from all bunkers stand. Nikolaus bravely moves to the center of no-man’s land. Gueusselin abandons his plan to grenade the German bunker.

The three lieutenants agree to a cease-fire, but only on Christmas Eve. The soldiers cautiously move toward each other, then share provisions, photos and names. Anna appears and the soldiers are awed by the sight of a woman. Fr. Palmer celebrates mass, while Jonathan finds his brother’s body and vows revenge. Fr. Palmer finishes the mass as bombs explode in the distance.

Act IIScene 1 – The next morning, Jonathan tries to bury his brother. Because the truce is officially over, two German sentries are prepared to shoot him, but Fr. Palmer and Lt. Gordon intervene. Horstmayer proposes that it may be time to bury all of the dead. The three lieutenants meet and decide to extend the truce until after the dead are buried.

Scene 2 – The soldiers pile up the corpses, Fr. Palmer delivers last rites and the soldiers form a processional bearing the wagon of bodies away. Anna looks on with Nikolaus and promises that he will not suffer the same fate.

Scene 3 – News of the cease-fire has reached headquarters, and the British Major, the Kronprinz and the French General all react in anger and disbelief. They declare that they will punish the soldiers for their betrayal.

Scene 4 – When the truce is over, Nikolaus ridicules Horstmayer for his allegiance to the Fatherland; Horstmayer arrests him for insubordination. Anna takes Nikolaus’ hand and leads him across no-man’s land as Horstmayer orders his men to shoot, but no one moves. Reaching the French bunker unharmed, Nikolaus demands asylum for Anna and himself.

Scene 5 – The British Major admonishes the Scottish soldiers for joining in the Christmas truce and transfers them to the front lines as punishment. When a German soldier crosses the battlefield, the Major orders him killed. Jonathan shoots the man. The General visits Audebert; he tells Audebert that he will be transferred to Verdun as punishment for consorting with the enemy and his unit will be disbanded. Audebert tells the French General, his father, that he has learned he has an infant son named Henri. They vow to survive the war for the child’s sake. The Kronprinz announces that the German soldiers are to be deployed in Pomerania as punishment. The soldiers are taken off in a boxcar. The battlefield is now empty. Snow begins to fall again.

Page 36: Silent Night (2015) Program

Although I grew up in New York, Philadelphia and Chicago, I currently live in London, where memories of World War I are still keenly felt. Every November, many members of the public don red paper poppies in honor of those killed. The commemoration continues until Remembrance Sunday, when the Queen places a wreath at the Cenotaph.

In much of the USA, the ‘Great War’ seems to have little present-day resonance. Perhaps the presence of the National World War I Museum engenders a stronger personal connection for Kansas City residents.

The emotional impact of the war became personal for me last year, when I conducted Silent Night at the Cincinnati Opera and a concert at the BBC Proms inspired by the play War Horse. I like to enter into the world of each piece I conduct, to imagine what the characters’ lives were like, to feel their emotions. During 2014, those feelings started to weigh on me; I can only imagine the anguish of those who had to endure more than four years of the actual event.

Had I been born sixty, forty, or even ten years earlier than I was, it is quite possible I would not have lived to middle age to enjoy professional and personal fulfilment. My artistic involvement in the Centennial has brought this home to me in a very personal way.

Kevin and Mark have created a masterful piece of music theatre. As opera professionals, we bring stories to life through music. The conductor’s job is to propel the action; personally, I aim to give the audience the most involving and immersive experience possible.

It is a joy to perform music of such emotional power: the ‘Sleep Chorus’, the orchestral sunrise, the love duet at the Kronprinz’s chalet, the overwhelming funeral march, to name only a few passages. For me, conducting Silent Night and helping to deliver its powerful message of peace is immensely fulfilling, both professionally and personally.

I had the privilege of seeing the development of this work from the beginning. I was able to witness the creative process involved in making Silent Night come alive, from table discussions, to musical workshops, to the world premiere and subsequent presentations. It became immediately clear to me that this opera would become part of the standard repertoire.

Opera plays a very different role in our culture today from the role it played at its inception. It was once the reality TV of its day, overflowing with drama and star-crossed lovers. In theory it should be a natural transition to market the art form to today’s young audiences, which have become accustomed to immediate gratification from all media.

Silent Night is a modern masterpiece that can reach out to all ages, proving that opera remains a vital art form. It is a work uniquely suited to appeal to modern audiences. The music is sophisticated, providing a rich and textured palate to an experienced listener; but the show’s pacing and relatable characters make it enjoyable for the opera novice as well. The superiorly crafted libretto and musical score combine to recreate a beautiful story that inspires hope in humanity. This work is unique in its incorporation of multiple art forms: music, dance, theater, and photography are all crucial to the telling of this story.

I am honored to direct this piece in this time. People today are in need, more than ever, of hope in our fellow man. Silent Night sends a message of peace and reminds us that when all else fails music can unite the human spirit.

Winner of the 2012 Pulitzer Prize for the opera Silent Night, Kevin Puts has been hailed as one of the most important composers of his generation. His work has been commissioned and performed by leading orchestras in the United States and abroad, including the New York Philharmonic, the Tonhalle Orchestër (Zurich), the symphony orchestras of Baltimore, Cincinnati, Detroit, Atlanta, Colorado, Houston, Fort Worth, Utah, and St. Louis; the Boston Pops; the

Minnesota Orchestra, which commissioned his Sinfonia Concertante; and by leading chamber ensembles such as the Mirò Quartet, the Eroica Trio, eighth blackbird, the Pittsburgh New Music Ensemble, and the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center.

Puts’ orchestral catalog includes four symphonies as well as several concertos written for some of today’s top soloists. In 2005, Mr. Puts received the tremendous honor of a commission in celebration of David Zinman’s 70th birthday, and the result was Vision, a cello concerto premiered by Yo‐Yo Ma and the Aspen Music Festival Orchestra. During the same year, his PercussionConcerto was premiered by Evelyn Glennie with the Pacific and Utah Symphonies. He has also written concertos for marimbist Makoto Nakura, viol inist Michael Shih, clarinetist Bil Jackson, and a piano concerto commissioned by the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra and premiered in 2008 by pianist and conductor Jeffrey Kahane.

Puts has received awards and grants from the American Academy in Rome, the Guggenheim Foundation, the American Academy of Arts and Letters, BMI and ASCAP. He has served as Composer‐in‐Residence of Young Concerts Artists, the California Symphony, the Fort Worth Symphony, the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, Bravo! Vail Valley Music Festival, Music from Angel Fire, and the Bach Dancing and Dynamite Society. He received his training as a composer and pianist at the Eastman School of Music and Yale University. Since 2006, he has been a member of the composition department at the Peabody Institute in Baltimore, Maryland.

A native of St. Louis, Missouri, Mr. Puts received his Bachelor’s Degree from the Eastman School of Music, his Master’s Degree from Yale University, and his Doctor of Musical Arts at the Eastman School of Music.

Cancer is a word no one ever wants to hear. It is even worse when a doctor says it while diagnosing yourchild.  That’s what happened to us on August 26, 2012. For the eight plus months that followed, our daughter Natalie fought her disease with courage, determination and grace. Unfortunately there havebeen no significant advancements in the treatment of childhood brain cancer during the past 30 years andNatalie didn’t live to celebrate her 9th birthday.

Please visit www.nataliesart.org to learn more about our organization, including how you can join

Team Natalie in the fight against childhood cancer!

It is with this in mind that we have established Natalie’s A.R.T. Foundation to honor her memory by raising Awareness, funding Research and improving the

Treatment experience for children battling cancer as well as their families.
