Outline holds back the flow of the dye, like a ‘fence’.

Outline is then washed out> white outline = scarves

What we will do today:

Trace your circle on paperSketch your design: pencil, then

SharpiePencil the design onto your hoop

Design should define closed shapes

Think>stained glass

Gutta: a resist ‘fence’ Practice line-making on your hand

or a paper

Apply over your lines on silk Check backside for gaps, fill all gaps

Heat dry (I usually let dry overnight).

Paint! Touch brush to the silk> not at the line…about 1”

away….let it flow.

Heat-settingWe won’t need to heat set our hoops.

If you choose to make scarves, the dye needs to be heat set, excess dye removed with Synthrapol…which will also wash

out the gutta.

I follow this by drying in a dryer for further heat.
