Silos Day Tour.

On Saturday 7th September, 5 “Village” people – Joan, Audrey, Doris, Bet & Fay

- travelled on a bus tour, around the Benalla region to view the art work on

silos and wall murals.

Leaving the bus depot in Wood St. at 7.30am, we had a 1.30 hr stop over at

Benalla, giving us plenty of time to walk around the shops, and to find many

beautiful street murals in the car park surrounds and laneways.

At Gooramba, were the well known paintings of the draught horses and coun-

try scene, then a visit to the Uniting Church, to see a portrait of Sophia, cover-

ing one inside wall.

A lunch stop at the Devenish Railway Hotel for a delicious 2 course meal, and

across the road we visited the Anzac memorial, depicting two army nurses

The last stop was Rochester with afternoon tea at 5.30pm, and to view the last

of the silos for the day.

All the paintings, both silos and wall murals were well worth visiting, travelling

400 km. arriving back at Bendigo at 7.30pm. Fay F

DID YOU KNOW?

Stewardesses is the longest word typed with only the left hand.

And 'lollipop' is the longest word typed with your right hand. No word in the English language rhymes with month, orange, silver, or purple. 'Dreamt' is the only English word that ends in the letters 'mt'. Our eyes are always the same size from birth, but our nose and ears never stop growing. The sentence: 'The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog' uses every letter of the alphabet. You probably knew this one? The words 'racecar,' 'kayak' and 'level' are the same whether they are read left to right or right to left (palindromes). There are only four words in the English language which end in 'dous': tremen-dous, horrendous, stupendous, and hazardous. There are two words in the English language that have all five vowels in order: 'abstemious' and 'facetious.' TYPEWRITER is the longest word that can be made using the letters only on one row of the keyboard. These “facts” have certainly NOT been fact checked by the Editor…!?

TRAVELLERS IN WESTERN AUSTRALIA

Three of our BRV residents recently joined the Charlton, Wycheproof, Donald and Queensland, 35 travellers cele-brating 30 years of travel with Trade Travel, with an extensive, all inclusive tour of Western Australia.

Accompanied by Trade Travel directors, Grant and Kay McGlashan, who had personally organised this tour, previ-ously travelling 3500km in Western Australia preparing for this celebratory tour, to ensure that no stone was left unturned for this enthusiastic group of local travellers.

Highlights included visits to Majestic Tingle and Karri Tree Top walk and Valley of the Giants climbing 40 metres amongst these towering ancient trees into the forest canopy.

Hyden and distinctive Wave Rock, 100 metres long and 15 metre high, and a walk across the top of this edifice, with our guide, with beautiful views of the district.

The fascinating Pinnacles desert , stretching far and wide in this unique sandy landscape are monoliths of every size.

Magnificent National Anzac Park with its fascinating stories of soldiers, nurses, their experiences and their records, a personal tour of HMAS Sydney Memorial, a story of those 645 soldiers lost in battle in November 1941, and the families they left behind.

Delicious Margaret River with the Chocolate factory and Xanadu winery.

Searching for the dolphins on Koombana Bay, who were a little elusive at first, these quick, elegant creatures dis-playing their versatile swimming abilities, far too quick for our cameras! Rocknest Island guided tour and lunch with the fascinatingly, cute little Quokkas .

Perth City tour and visit to the beautiful wildflower display at the Botanical Gardens, a relaxing lunchtime cruise with excellent entertainment with Captain Cook Cruises, and a visit and guided tour of the Perth Mint to watch the pouring of a gold bar.

As well as visiting Geraldton, with a walk along the beach front or a paddle in the Indian Ocean, Fremantle a visit to markets or walk to the beach, watching the sun go down across the bay.

Albany's historic whaling station, York where there was a motor car display and some Charltonians caught up with ex local Ray Roberts, Dalwallinu, and of course the wild-flower displays.

All the while travelling, sitting back relaxing in a grand coach with expert driver and commentator Geoff Piper from Tasmania.

Special birthday celebrations for Kevin and Brian Patton and Pam Rosewall, with a very happy lot of travellers cel-ebrating in fine style.

Some travellers completing their tour with two days and nights on board the Indian Pacific, with the enticing cui-sine and welcoming staff.

Interesting stops at Kalgoorlie and Cook and watching the dry landscape pass by our windows.

Neil’s bit..

Hi everyone,

I just wanted to thank everyone for their concern, patience

and understanding with my recent health issue. For those of

you who don’t know, I am about to have open-heart surgery

to fix a leaky valve, hence the reason I have not really been

available of late. For the medically inclined, I currently have

congestive heart failure with mitral valve regurgitation.

Circumflex artery is also slightly damaged and may need by-

pass but they wont know until they open me up.

Angus wants me to get a tattoo of a zipper on my new scar, once it’s healed … I think I might.

Most of my work is being done from home at the moment (including this Village Voice) or we have out-

sourced it temporarily until I’m fully back on deck.

I absolutely take my hat off to Leigh - she has been amazing, picking everything up as quickly as she has.

She really has been thrown in to the deep-end and luckily for us, she can swim—really well!!

Leigh, Paula, Skye and Debb are all doing a wonderful job keeping the place running smoothly and we are

also very grateful for the support we are receiving from Jim Parkes and his book-keeper Diane. Both are

taking on temporary work in my absence.

The good news is, I’ll be better, stronger, faster and healthier when I return and then we’ll send Leigh off

for a well-earned holiday. I’ve lost 12 kilos during the past few weeks and have finally given up smoking—

completely! Sometimes I guess it just takes a big push to make these nasty habits go away. My new years

resolutions were to lose weight and give up smoking, so I guess I’ve achieved those—first time ever!

My apologies to everyone for anything that was cancelled last month—I know Bec was really looking for-

ward to our Anniversary Cooked Breakfast. I really do appreciate those resi-

dents who have stepped up and assisted when we need them, without you,

many more activities may have been put off, so thank you!

Lots happening next month and we are putting things in place just in case I’m

not around to coordinate, so good luck everyone and I hope October is a won-

derful month for all of us.

Neil

Evergreen Band are popular regulars at the Village and their appearance on Wednesday, September 11, was no exception.

The Bamboo Room attracted a large crowd who were entertained with golden oldies and amusements by the band whose average age is 73 -- formed back in 1995!

BRV, by the way, is an active con-tributor to the bands welfare. GH.

What is the Ukraine Fund?

Thank you residents for your wonderful contribution to the Ukraine Fund. Each article of clothing placed

in the collection box is appreciated. Thank you John and Betty Barling for sorting, packing and bringing the

bags of good clothing to Donald.

Where does the clothing go? Answer: To benefit people from low income families in Ukraine and local

needs.

Where is Ukraine? We have all heard of Gallipoli and the Dardanelles. Sail through that narrow isthmus

into the Black Sea and straight north, and on the northern coastline of the Black Sea is the city of Odessa

and the country of Ukraine.

Ukraine is very rich in natural resources – best cereal growing soil in the world, coal and water! It

should be the richest country in Europe except every conquering country wanted Ukraine for a thousand

years! – finally the Soviet Union. We were there for Ukraine’s 20th anniversary. We rejoiced with them that

they were finally free of conquerors, since 1991. But no! Russia invaded again in 2014 on the pretence of

supporting the rebels who wanted Ukraine to be under Russia’s domination. The war continues although on

a lesser scale. The newspapers report spasmodic shootings with young men still being killed or injured.

The cost of defending its border, rising cost of utilities, the cost of improving infra structure after years of

neglect, low wages, alongside corruption has left millions of Ukrainians with an income barely covering

their costs.

Our first visit to Ukraine in 2000 (attracted to see the marvellous soil and farming) left us with a desire to

assist with a container of second hand goods. Since then we have sent 10 containers to Ukraine. After 25

years, Ukraine’s economy has improved sufficiently to not need the second hand clothes and household

goods but rather financial help.

We started an Op Shop to raise money for the cost of the freight and supporting university students from

low income families. Although we are no longer sending containers of clothes, we are selling the donated

clothes to enable the Ukraine Aid and Education Fund to support 12 university students with a small schol-

arship which is a monthly allowance of $50US. The students use this for transport costs to and from uni,

buy warm clothes and shoes, books, or fees. The parents find this very helpful.

The war has left a million displaced Ukrainians in their own country. The refugee families have to start

all over again. On asking how we could help, the parents asked if we could fund English classes to help

with their children’s education. The classes are now called the `English Club’. There are four groups for

children, teens, adults. The financial support from the Ukraine Aid and Education Fund is very much appre-

ciated. Thank you for your part in this contribution to a people group who is not as fortunate as we are here

in Australia.
