silver gate yacht club

Soundings Editor: John Ellis [email protected] Well this past month has proven yet again that time marches on, whether you are ready for it to or not. Silver Gate Yacht Club has lost a good friend, a fine Port Captain and great all around human being in the pass- ing of Joe Moody. Joe was such an inte- gral part of the club, truly a joy to talk with, and a hard worker whose willingness to put forth amazing amounts of effort and passion on behalf of the club and the club’s best interests continued up until the day he left this earth. We will all rally in support of Sue and will hold a remem- brance for Joe sometime in the next few months. We will notify the club of the date. For me, another sign that marches on is that George and I delivered our oldest son, Alexander, in to the welcoming arms of the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs. It is hard to believe that it has now been 19 years ago that we joined Silver Gate, brought Alexander in for dinner as his first outing as a newborn, and are now waving good bye. Our club is marching on too. You can see the finish work that is continuing on the outside of the building and more of the same is happening inside. Tile walls are being completed, window trim is being stained, the bar top is in and a myriad of other small details continue to build to- ward a finished product that we can start to move into in August. In August, that is still hard to wrap your head around, isn’t it? six weeks and we will be able to walk into our new space! You will soon be called upon to help with moving all of our furniture and furnishings that have been packed away back into the new house. Please be generous with your time when we call for volunteers for this final part of our project. We continue to be grateful for the support you have given us throughout this project. Well this past month has proven yet again that time marches on, whether you are ready for it to or not. Silver Gate Yacht Club has

lost a good friend, a fine Port Captain and great all around human being in the pass-ing of Joe Moody. Joe was such an inte-gral part of the club, truly a joy to talk with, and a hard worker whose willingness to put forth amazing amounts of effort and passion on behalf of the club and the club’s best interests continued up until the day he left this earth. We will all rally in support of Sue and will hold a remem-brance for Joe sometime in the next few months. We will notify the club of the date.

For me, another sign that marches on is that George and I delivered our oldest son, Alexander, in to the welcoming arms of the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs. It is hard to believe that it has now been 19 years ago that we joined Silver Gate, brought Alexander in

for dinner as his first outing as a newborn, and are now waving good bye.

Our club is marching on too. You can see the finish work that is continuing on the outside of the building and more of the same is happening inside. Tile walls are being completed, window trim is being stained, the bar top is in and a myriad of other small details continue to build to-ward a finished product that we can start to move into in August. Carey Storm

Will the 4th of July Fire-works be the Big Bay Boom or Bust? By the time the Soundings

are published we will know. As with years in the past, I have relatives coming to town to watch the fantas-tic show that the Port of San Diego and contributors including Silver Gate Yacht Club help to put on. Let’s hope for a great show.

July will be a busy month for mem-bers with 4th of July Holiday activities, dinghy parade at 11AM followed by a potluck in the trailer. There will be V-32 races the first weekend ( there are V-32 boats available for use if you don’t own one). Contact Dave En-dert, the V-32 Dude, for additional

information as he knows all!

Fiddlers Green will again be hosting a food tasting for Silver Gate on July 14th. If the last one is any indication of what to expect, you will not want to miss this event. RSVP is required.

There will be the general member-ship meeting on the 19th and we will, for the last time be at the Island Palms. They have been good hosts for our meeting but it will be nice to be in our own home. We hope to have the last and final sneak preview of the clubhouse prior to the meeting and prior to taking possession from the contractor. I can guarantee that you will be stunned with the effective use of space, the materials used and the overall look and feel.

We also have the Commodore’s raft –up on the 26th – 28th which has always been a well “anchored” event.

I have never missed one since be-coming a member.

The Silver Gate Club Store is gearing up after a year's absence. Linda Ames will be ordering new merchan-dise in preparation for the clubhouse opening and to also satisfy the needs of members wanting Silver Gate items. If you would like to request specific items or make a suggestion, contact Linda Ames as she is working with suppliers now.

Lastly, 8 bells for member and Port

Captain Joe Moody.

The Little Clipper Race, June 15, brought a new face to the action, Jim Kruse and his new boat “Uproarious”. Jim is the proud new owner of Craig Williams’ V32, which he renamed in honor of Craig. We are so happy to have Jim and Kathy as part of our V32 a fleet.

To those who brought the awesome desserts and snacks, thank you.

The wind was up and down as usual. The weather mark was hard to obtain and Ed Tschernoscha’s Harden Up suf-fered a demasting. Unfortunately, Ron Griffin’s boat, Race Knight, suffered the same event a couple of months prior.

As a general reminder, check your jib attachment on the foredeck and make sure it looks secure and stable.

The race results are as follows:

SKIPPER/BOAT PLACE

Larry Pascoe/Day Off 1st

Dave Endert/War Child 2nd

Ron Griffin/Race Knight 3rd

Dennis Jackson/Zorro 4th

Jim Kruse/Uproarious 5th

Ed Tschernoscha/Harden Up 6th

Don Mumby/Half Acre 7th

To ALL of you, “Thank you for helping to making this so much fun for all of us.”

Dave Endert,

V32 Dude

Oh yes, I should mention we had an exhibition sail of a new fleet, THE “FOOTY”. IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN THIS MINI FLEET, PLEASE CALL LARRY PASCOE, AS HE KICKED EVERYONE’S YOU KNOW WHAT!!!

First, a thank you to Jim Holden (and the Race Committee) for standing in for Joe Plymesser, our PRO. Joe had other duties on our first Destination Cruise to Ensenada! Here are the Clipper Race results:

If you’d like to race your boat, need crew or would like to crew on a race boat, contact our Race Chair, Dennis Jack-

son at [email protected]. It’s a great way to get out on the water and enjoy boating and camaraderie! Additionally, if you’d like to volunteer on the Race Committee, contact our Principal Race Officer, Joe Plymesser at [email protected] – another great way to get out on the bay for a day! You don’t need any experience, and it’s a fun way to meet new members.

SGYC: Boating ~ Friendship ~ Community Service

As you can see from the list of new Members and new Applicants above, our Membership drive continues to be suc-cessful. Thank you all for your support and help in bringing in new Members; sponsoring new Members and joining in at our Welcome Aboard dock parties in true SGYC Style! This time last year we had 377 total Members, (this is a net figure that includes new Members, retirements & resigna-tions.) This year we have 477, (& growing), which translates to 26.5% growth over 13 months. And it is quality growth. Our new Members are a good mix of family & friends of existing Members as well as many who were drawn to SGYC due to our beautiful new Clubhouse, the View, our community service record, a strong affinity for boating and our friendly Members. We have a lot to celebrate this 4

th of July – a stunning new Clubhouse that will soon be open and a very dynamic &

thriving Membership! The last day to turn in new Membership applications for review at the July Board meeting is Saturday, July 7, 2013.

Sincerely, Angela Benson Director/Membership Chairperson

11stst ANNUAL DESTINATION CRUISE ANNUAL DESTINATION CRUISE

TO ENSENADA, MEXICO!TO ENSENADA, MEXICO!

Seven sturdy sailboats ventured south early Friday morning, June 21, for beautiful Hotel Coral in Ensenada, Mexico. Arriving throughout the day were Liberty, SchatzSea, Champagne, Poetry, South Forty, Yankee Doodle and Sojourn.

On Saturday, our well-rested sailors headed for the renowned Valle de Guadalupe to taste the best of Baja’s wines from six wineries!

Our day of wine tasting was followed by a sunset dinner and an awesome view at nearby Punta Morro Resort.

Mimosas were appropriately served aboard Champagne on Sunday morning before heading up to the hotel for its famous brunch!

Our cruisers made a trip into town on Sunday after-noon to enjoy the local color at Papas & Beer!

After a great weekend of fun and friendship, our happy fleet returned to San Diego, and was greeted by a beautiful view of our city.

The Destination Cruise to Ensenada and to the luxurious Hotel Coral was such fun that we plan to do it again next year! Mark your cruising calendars for 2014’s Summer Solstice Weekend!
