Country Show Day

Thank you to everyone who have helped us in any way in the organisation of our Country

Show Day. The PTA have been working extremely hard in making this day an exciting and

fun day for all. This is our major fundraising event of the year so please come along and

support your school and children.

Saturday 27 October: 10am - 2pm

Brought to you by Bayleys

As well as a lot of the classic stalls and rides we have some NEW AMUSEMENTS for you to

experience.

There will be a large array of food, something for everyone. A Cake Stall with so many tasty

cakes, slices and other baked goods you'll find it hard to choose which one you'll take

home.

We have a great range of silent auction items - there is something there for you! Get on our

silent auction website now and start browsing!

You need to logged in to participate and to

win the auction go to

https://www.32auctions.com/CSD2018 to

create an account.

We look forward to seeing you there!

Please no dogs are allowed at Country Show

Day.

Boomerang Bags

Thank you to our students in Room 36 who

helped one of our wonderful Grandmothers

to sew these Boomerang Bag. These bags

are to be left at the library to be given out to

people who forget to bring a bag. They can

either be returned for others to use, or kept at

home and reused for other things.

What a great way to care for each other

and our planet!

Transition Meetings

We will be holding transition and information

meetings for our Year 1 children and parents,

Year 2 children and parents and our Year 4

children and parents. These meetings are to

inform parents and children about what to

expect when they move teams next year.

Our first meeting is for our Year 2 children and

parents on Thursday 29 November at 6.30pm.

On Thursday 6 December at 6.00pm we have

our transition meeting for our Year 1 parents

and children.

On Thursday 6 December at 6.30pm we have

our transition meeting for our Year 4 parents and children. More information to follow.

Prizegiving

This year there will be no Silverdale School end of year prizegiving.

To start with, here is a quote from Alfie Kohn:

In short, good values have to be grown from the inside out. Attempts to short-circuit this

process by dangling rewards in front of children are at best ineffective, and at worst

counterproductive. Children are likely to become enthusiastic, lifelong learners as a result

of being provided with an engaging curriculum; a safe, caring community in which to

discover and create; and a significant degree of choice about what (and how and why)

they are learning. Rewards–like punishments–are unnecessary when these things are

present, and are ultimately destructive in any case. (Alfie Kohn, The Risk of Rewards)

There are a number of reasons we have decided that we will no longer have an end of

year prizegiving. There is abundant research showing that awards, rewards and other

external incentives undermine intrinsic motivation. For the majority of children who don’t

receive awards, the prizegiving spurs boredom, anger or resentment. Handing out awards

at the end of year prizegiving doesn’t aligned with our beliefs and values. Learning should

be the reward, children who didn’t receive a prize hear that they weren’t good enough or

that their unique combination of attributes don’t truly count. It’s not an award at the end

of the year that drives achievement. Excellence comes from a school culture that fosters

collaboration and provides opportunities for children to lead, especially in those areas

where children have special talents and skills. If school is an actual community, separating

out individuals for special notice makes no sense. We hope that children will continue to

develop their best selves for their own benefit, not because someone tells them to or

because there’s an award at the end of the year.

Schools are not about ranking and sorting. They are about learning and creativity in a safe

and caring environment. They are about empowering all children, not just the ones that

are strong at the core subjects. If we continuously tell our children that EVERY SINGLE ONE

OF THEM is important to our school, I do not see how end of year prizegiving align with this

belief. Do you?

PTA NEWS

Page 5: SILVER PATHWAY - SILVERDALE SCHOOL - Home · Prizegiving This year there will be no Silverdale School end of year prizegiving. To start with, here is a quote from Alfie Kohn: In short,

On Friday 26th October I shall be travelling with my 5 local women companions….all loaded to

the gunnels with goods for the families of Madang School near the the Annapurna region in

Nepal.

I would like to say a huge thank you to all the generous Silverdale Primary School families who

have sorted through their children’s warm winter clothing that is no longer needed, and kindly

donated these clothes to children in Nepal. Winter is approaching fast in Nepal now so I know the

clothing will be welcomed.

The smiles on the faces of the children lucky enough to receive some of these beautiful clothes will

say it all……thank you, thank you.

I shall also be taking no longer needed library books from the school library to Nepal as well. So a

huge thank you to the school and to Cushla in the library.

It’s wonderful to be a part of a close knit school community that supports so many events in the

local area.

Many, many thanks to everyone,

Miriam Godfrey.

COMMUNITY NOTICES – These notices are inserted on behalf of the community.

BearCats Basketball will be resuming Term 4 training at Stanmore Bay Leisure Centre on Sunday 28th October. Professional coaching is provided by Shayne McCauley (ex NBL, Harbour, Coast) and is great value at just $65 per term. We realise that most school teams are coached/managed by supportive parents who may not have much basketball experience themselves so this is a great way to get the team's skills and confidence up so they can better enjoy and progress in games. (We also offer all new players a FREE "try us" session.)
