Senior Programs

There are several assistance programs that seniors should be aware of this fall:

Medicare Part D Annual Enrollment

This year’s annual enrollment period is Oct. 15-Dec. 7. When you enroll in a plan during this time it will begin on Jan. 1, 2016. Plans can change from year to year, and by doing a plan comparison you can select the best plan available for you.

Options for enrollment assistance:

· You can compare plans using Medicare’s online Drug Plan Finder at www.medicare.gov

· You can also do a plan comparison by calling 2-1-1 twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week through Nov. 20

· Contact the State Health Insurance Counseling Program at 1-888-575-6611.

· Valley Senior Services is offering limited enrollment assistance; please call Bernie at 356-1422 for an appointment.

Low Income Subsidy (LIS) A Social Security program called Low Income Subsidy (LIS or also known as Extra Help) may help pay your Medicare premiums and drug costs.

If you have limited income and assets, you may qualify for Extra Help with the costs of your prescription drugs. The Social Security Administration and Medicare work together to give you this extra help.

Income for 2015 cannot exceed: Single: $17,655

Couple: $23,895

Assets for 2015 cannot exceed: Single: $13,640

Couple: $27,250

To apply for LIS, contact the Social Security Administration at 1.800.772.1213 or www.socialsecurity.gov or call the State Health Insurance Counseling Program at 1.888.575.6611.

Tips from the New Dietitian

Hello! My name is Janet Brown and I am the new dietitian for Valley Sen-ior Services. I am excited to start working with all of you as well as menu planning, writing articles and presenting on current topics.

My professional history starts in Tuc-son, where my husband and I at-tended the University of Arizona. Af-ter completing my internship, I worked at 2 different hospitals. In 2000, we moved to Ohio where I worked at 2 different doctor’s prac-tices, one family medicine and one internal medicine. The internal med-icine practice had 19 providers with 13 different specialists including car-diologists, gastroenterologists (GI), rheumatologists and one endocrinol-ogist. The endocrinologist nurtured my interest in diabetes prevention and education which became a pro-fessional and personal passion. Through this work experience, I was able to obtain my CDE (Certified Di-abetes Educator) in 2002 and main-tained it until 2012.

In 2007, my husband became the Bison baseball coach. Our family moved to Fargo, where I have accu-mulated 5 part-time jobs. I work at both North Dakota State University’s and Minnesota State University Moorhead’s Wellness Centers. Also through NDSU I work as a clinical

instructor for dietetic students. Earlier this year, I joined the team at Prairie St John’s Hospital. And last but certainly not least, Valley Senior Services has welcomed me as their new dietitian.

I have 2 children. Our son is a high school freshman and enjoys baseball and soc-cer. Our daughter is a 7

th grader and

loves every form of dance. I enjoy attend-ing all of our family’s activities, exercising and every form of puzzle.

I would like to close with some key point-ers on nutrition. Eating healthy does not have to be hard or expensive. Keep the following in mind: ¨ Eat breakfast to ‘break’ the fast. ¨ Eat smallish but fairly often (a fire will

burn if you keep adding fuel) ¨ Make each plate colorful ¨ An occasional treat makes everyone

happy (everything in moderation)

Looking forward to getting to know the Valley Senior Services community!

Healthy Regards, Janet Brown, RD, LRD

Social Security

Ques!ons and Answers

Ques!on: I am ready to file for Social Security re"rement. What do I

need to know?

Answer: Being ready to file for re"rement should include that you have

es"mated your benefit amount using Re"rement Planner tools in the SSA

Re"rement Benefits sec"on at www.socialsecurity.gov/re"re researched

your ques"ons, created a personal my Social Security account and used it

to review your earnings record on your Statement for accuracy.

Many Social Security re"rement and other applica"ons are completed

online. You can file for Medicare online, even if not re"ring yet. SSA rep-

resenta"ves, some"mes but not usually from your local office, review

online applica"ons and contact you if needed. The online applica"on is

linked from the Re"rement Benefits page.

Clicking on the “Apply for Re"rement Benefits” link brings you to helpful

informa"on, including a short video introduc"on. Compete the en"re

applica"on at one "me or save it to complete later as you prefer. Status

of your completed applica"on can be checked online.

Other op"ons are filing by telephone or in-person at your local office. For

these an appointment is recommended and can be made by calling the

SSA na"onal toll-free number, 800-772-1213 (TTY 800-325-0778), from

7:00am – 7:00pm local "me, Monday – Friday, standard business days.

Complete your applica"on about 3 months before you want benefits to

start. Re"rement applica"ons for January 2016 are already being pro-

cessed. However you complete your applica"on, reviewing the checklist

in the “Apply for Re"rement Benefits” will be helpful. SSA benefits for a

month are received the following month.

Specific ques"ons depend on your situa"on. For example, if married, ex-

pect to provide the name of your spouse and date of marriage. Details

about previous marriages are asked. There are ques"ons about military

service dates and recent employment. To establish direct deposit of ben-

efits to your bank, have available the bank rou"ng number and your ac-

count number. These ques"ons are to help you receive all benefits possi-

ble.

Senior Programs

Fuel Assistance

The Low Income Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) helps eligible individuals and families pay part of their home heating costs. Applications will be accepted until May 31, 2016.

LIHEAP can help pay for the fuel you use to heat the home you live in from October through May if you buy your heating fuel from a fuel dealer or a utility company (fuel oil, propane, natural gas, electricity, wood, coal or kerosene), of if your rent payments include heat and you do not receive a rent subsidy. The amount of benefits you may be eligible for depends on your income, the type and size of your home and the type of fuel used to heat your home.

To be eligible, the total income of all persons living in your household must be counted. Total income must be below these limits:

1 person household: $2,306 per month/$27,682 per year

2 person household: $3,016 per month/$36,200 per year

You can get an application from Cass County Social Services or our office. If you have questions regarding Fuel Assistance, please call the Fuel Assistance office at 241-5761 or one of our Options Counselors at 293-1440 or toll-free at 1-877-827-1916.

Homestead Tax Credit

The homestead credit is a property tax relief program for qualifying homeowners who are age 65 or older (unless the applicant is permanently and totally disabled) in the year for which the application is made. For a husband and wife who are living together, only one may apply for the homeowner’s credit. Only the spouse ap-plying for the credit or refund need be 65 years of age or older.

The applicant’s income, plus the income of a spouse and any dependents, may not exceed $42,000 for the calen-dar year preceding the assessment date. The applicant must consider income from all sources. Medical expenses actually paid during the year are deductible from income if not compensated for by insurance or otherwise.

Additional requirements for homeowners: · A homeowner must reside on and have an interest in the property for which the credit is claimed. · The applicant’s assets may not exceed $500,000, including the market value of the homestead and the value

of any assets gifted or otherwise divested within the last three years. · No person shall qualify to receive the property tax credit if the homestead is rented while the owner is tempo-

rarily absent or the homestead is a farm structure which is exempt from taxation. · The tax credit will reduce the taxable value of the homestead on a sliding scale depending upon the income

of the applicant.

Application for the credit is filed with the local assessor or county director of tax equalization by February 1 (or as soon thereafter as possible) in the year in which your property is assessed and for which the credit is request-ed.

You may call the Office of State Tax Commissioner for more information at 1-877-328-7088, option 6.

For more information on any of these programs,

Farewell Jenny

Jenny Marhula, our dietitian for the last nine years, has resigned her position with our program and her family is relocating to Iowa. During the time that Jenny has worked for our program she has prepared over 200 menus for the 30+ senior centers in our region. In addition she has written more than 100 articles on healthy eating for the Silver Quill and has done countless presentations on nutrition related topics at our senior centers.

We join with the seniors from throughout the region in thanking Jenny for her dedicated service to our program and wish her the very best in her move to Iowa. Thanks so much, Jenny!

Also, we have hired a new dietitian to replace Jenny. Her name is Janet Brown and she started

work for us on October 15th. You will find an article by Janet introducing herself to you on page 4
