.......Happy New Year everyone!......welcome to a brand new year and a brand new decade full of prom-ise.....yes, things are looking up, in the cattle business anyway....as I write this the fat price is up, cows are up, and feeder prices are at a pre-BSE level for the time being........experts are having a hard tme explain-ing it....the dollar is at par, feed grain prices are high, two factors that usually keep cattle prices down....the only thing I can figure out is that we’ve done such a good job of reducing the cowherd that the old law of supply and demand has kicked in.....it’s the one thing we can always count on........it’s been a long wait but maybe this year we will see a return to the black...and I don’t mean the color of the hide.....................Happy Birthday wishes to Carman Jackson, High Bluff Stock Farm Inglis, MB, who joins the half-cen-tury club this month......no worries Carman, you don’t look a day over 49.........................and our deepest sympathies to Agnes, Ken and Grace and all of the Small Family on Bill’s passing in November.......Bill was a tireless promoter of Simmen-tal, Canadian Western Agribition and the beef industry in general.....these few words don’t seem enough to pay tribute to him, but I’d just like to say Bill Small was one of the kindest, most genuine, amazing men I’ve ever had the privilege to know...we’d always have a visit whenever I would meet up with Bill and Ag-nes.......and I would always come away uplifted, his genuine interest in and support of whatever we were doing a source of encouragement, and his passion for the business inspirational.......the cattle industry has lost a great friend but we are better off for having known him....................in case you haven’t heard, Simmental Focus is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year and to cel-ebrate, we’ve been thinking of having a big party.......what do ya think of that, would ya come to a little shindig....we’ll party like it’s 1991....we’re just kick-ing it around and would like some feedback so give us a shout and stay tuned...............off to a warm climate for a bit so if you could di-rect your calls to Joanne that’d be great........y’all stay warm now................... I would like to thank the MSA for bestowing this prestigious award on me. When I reflect upon the previous recipients, I feel honoured to be in their company. I guess I have been around cattle all my life. I was first introduced to the Simmental breed when I was showing the Draper brother’s Shorthorn cattle. We had taken 3 imported Simmental heifers of Bar 5 Simmentals to display at Buffalo Days in Regina. These were the first 3 heifers that Bar 5 had imported. They were big and they were very impressive. I started my career working with Simmental cattle at the first Bar 5 major production sales held in March of 1974. They sold one of those heifers and her calf for $95,000. I started as a herdsman, concentrating on the show and sale cattle. Over the years Bar 5 imported over 150 breeding females which enlarged the breed-ing herd to over 500 females. As the herd grew, so did the size of the spring bull sales, numbering at times up to 150 lots. This eventually evolved into an annual fall female sale. I remained at Bar 5 until their dispersal sale in August of 2001. Over the years, ownership at Bar 5 changed hands four times. From the original five breeders who started Bar 5, to Elson McDougald, to Emil Stang, to Ron Nolan. Each ownership had much the same philosophy in trying to raise the best performance fullbloods to meet the needs of seed stock breeders as well as their commercial breeder clientele. I had some great mentors over the years in Mac and John Draper as well as Wilf Davis. I was in-volved in every aspect of the ranch and spent the latter years as a production manager of Bar 5. I had the privilege of working with some phenomenal cattle as we prepared for the many shows and sales, but I think the most treasured part of all my years in the Simmental business are the friendships that were forged and all the great people I have had the opportunity to meet through travel, Bar 5 sales and the farm visits from people from all over the world. I would be amiss if I did not recognize the crew we had at Bar 5. They worked hard, they played hard and the cattle were at their best when they need-ed to be. They were the best!
we had the time to devote to them. We both work off the farm, but still maintain a commercial herd and have a handful of Purebreds on shares with our good friend Ken Hayes from Alberta. This enables us to stay active members of the Keystone Association as well as be considered guest consignors at the Mar Mac sale. In closing, I would just like to say what a privilege it has been to share this breed with all of you. It has been a great life experience. Thank you once again for the acknowledgement by the MSA in presenting me with the Dolphe Henuset Distinguished Breeder Award. It was a great honour to accept this award today.
Since the Bar 5 chapter closed, my wife Joan and I purchased the east farm where we ran 60 Full-blood and commercial cattle. We dispersed our Full-blood herd in October of 2007 as we no longer felt

Simmental Focus - How It All Beganby Lois Gould
This year marks the 20th an-niversary of Simmental Focus, and we thought we would start the year off by giving you a little history on how it all began. I guess the idea originated back in 1990 when I was elected to the Manitoba Simmental Associa-tion Board of Directors. Because of my background in journalism and advertising, I volunteered to serve on the newsletter committee. Back then the MSA newsletter was about an eight-page mailout that basically communicated MSA happenings to the membership. As basic as it was, after a year we could see that it was too much work to be doing on a volunteer basis. And at that time it seemed breeders were looking for an alternative venue to advertise their Simmentals. The time was right to start a magazine. After much discussion with my family and the MSA directors, I decided to tender for the publication of the MSA newsletter. In February of 1991, I was successful in my bid, a deal was struck with the MSA Board, and Simmental Focus was born. Now if you’re wondering how the magazine got its name, I have to give full credit to my husband. “The Focus” took its name from a very successful MSA event held back in 1987, “Feedlot Focus and Frolic”, the name for which Blaine came up with. When the time came to name the new magazine, he suggested “Simmental Focus”. Well the name stuck, and the rest, as they say, is history. I started out printing the Focus at Sanderson Printing in Souris, and stayed with them for 15 years, until Bill closed the business. Bill and Jeannie were invaluable to me, and played a huge role in the suc-cess of the magazine. It began as a black and white publication with spot color, and then in 1999, at Bill’s suggestion, we went to full color newsprint, and never looked back! Initially the mailing list consisted of the 400 names that the MSA had on its list. In late 1991, I was approached by several directors of the Saskatchewan Simmental Association, led by Rick McIntyre, to
The 1991 MSA Board of Directors: front row (l-r)-Lois Gould, Melanie Ruckle, Darcy Hickson, Blair McRae, Joanne Mitchell. Back row (l-r)-Wayne Car-son, Ken Fahrenshon, Dan Szwaluk, Kim Warburton, Pat Beech, Terry Kaskiw.
look into the possibility of expanding into their prov-ince with the magazine. So on a blistering cold day in January 1992, I attended the SSA Annual Meeting in Regina and presented a proposal. Another deal was struck, and with the addition of the substantial SSA mailing list, the Focus was now serving two prov-inces. It was the beginning of a wonderful working relationship with the SSA folks which continues to this day. It was also the beginning of many trips to Re-gina and Saskatoon to attend the SSA annual meetings which were held for many years with the Saskatche-wan Livestock Association Convention. Those meet-ings were always a great time and many friends were made along the way, but I sure don’t miss that drive in January! Work continued for many years to add to the mailing list with names gathered from various sources and always with a view to reaching not only purebred breeders but commercial producers as well. In the fall of 2005, the Focus underwent an-other expansion after being approached by the Alberta Simmental Association. With the addition of the ASA membership list, we were now truly prairie-wide.

SIMMENTAL FOCUS-53
54-SIMMENTAL FOCUS SIMMENTAL FOCUS-55Saskatchewan Simmental Association 2010 Commercial Breeder of the Year
Openshaw Farms-Deiter &Marlene Rucks
Dieter and Marlene have chosen the livestock industry to be their sole focus. They have been breed-ing Simmental cattle for the last 30 years. Their farm is located southeast of Frobisher, SK. This is where one can find either of them checking cows, fencing or running a piece of equipment. Dieter and Marlene run a 250-plus herd of red and black Simmental females, where they have fo-cused on the basics of the beef industry - raising good, solid, functional cattle. Herd health that is right up to date and great record-keeping are priorities for them. Their farm is self-supporting as they grow all of their own hay, pasture and feed grains. Over the years they have found it better to work along with Mother nature and now calve mid to end of March, and no longer in January. Dieter has A.I’d over the years, but he and Marlene enjoy sourcing out their next herdbull, finding the ones that meet their require-ments. They love the Simmental genetics, from the calving ease to the extra performance at weaning time. They appreciate the udder type/quality and the mater-nal ability that the Simmental females possess. When the Rucks sell their calves they can be found in the top pens that are topping the markets that week. They continually obtain this by setting stan-dards for their cows and have a no-nonsense approach with a strict culling process. Their heifer calves are put back into the herd and developed into cows. Dieter and Marlene are passionate about Simmental cattle and if you are ever in the Frobisher area, stop in for a tour!
The 2010 SSA Scholarship Heifer, Crossroad X’Dance 133X, was donated by Crossroad Farms, Shell Lake, SK and won by Storebo Farms, Beechy, SK and Lazy Bar B Simmentals, Lucky Lake, SK. The draw took place at Agribition.
Saskatchewan Simmental Association CWA Pick of the Barn 2010
The 2010 SSA Pick of the Barn Draw was won by Sunny Valley Simmentals, Hanley, SK. They selected Double Bar D Silver, an entry of Double Bar D Farms, Grenfell, SK., who received $10,000 cash.

SIMMENTAL FOCUS-5958-SIMMENTAL FOCUS
In addition to covering western Canada, the Focus is mailed to interested producers across the country and in the U.S. After 20 years it’s still a thrill for me when someone asks to get on the mailing list. It means alot to me that in this day and age of hustle and bustle, folks still like to sit down with a cup of coffee and read the Focus. Alot has changed in 20 years, from the cattle we produce to the way we do business. Today’s Sim-mentals are much different from the 1991 models, frame size has come down and more meat and muscle has been added. Probably one of the biggest changes with the genetics in our cattle, is the color choices we now have. In 1991 traditional cattle were the norm, reds were just coming in, and blacks were virtually unheard of. Today you are hard-pressed to find a tra-ditional, splashed up Simmental, at least in this part of the country. It’s been a positive evolution for the breed in the past 20 years. As far as technology goes, I’m not so sure. Oh we’ve made gigantic strides, I’m just not convinced it’s all for the better. But change it has. To put it in perspective, when I started the Fo-cus, I purchased the latest in technology (with the help of my Mom) -- a fax machine, the kind with the roll of thermal paper and disappearing ink. To save money, I bought the discounted floor model, and it still cost me $800! I bought my first computer in 1993, if you don’t count the Commodore 64. It was a Mac, and I didn’t have a hot clue what to do with it. The Internet was just some weird futuristic thing people kept talking about, and I didn’t get email until years later. Now we’d all be hooped if the internet ever shut down. Virtually everything we receive for the Focus is sent digitally, We rarely even scan photos anymore, and the fax machine sits idle most days. I guess I like the fact that we don’t have to depend on snail mail anymore, but I sometimes wonder if bigger, better, faster is really what we need. But I can’t stop it so I guess I’ll just try to keep up. For many years, the Focus was basically a one-woman show. But I have had some wonderful em-ployees along the way, if only temporary. Many good firends have helped me out over the years, too many to mention, so I’ll just mention the few who were actually on the payroll.
In the early going, my dear friend Elaine Arm-strong-Ferris worked with me, and was a great help in keeping my filing and accounting up to date. Then in 1995 Tracy Vestby did a short stint with the Focus. We had some great times together before she went off to seek her fortune. In 2001, Chad Penner came to work for me when he was getting back on his feet after an operation. He was a character, full of fun, and really raised the profile of Simmental Focus during his short time with us. It maybe wasn’t all good, but I bet you still remember him! Another valuable member of the team for a few years was Joyce Gordon. Joyce is a proofreader extraordinaire, nothing gets by her, and I really appre-ciated her accuracy and attention to detail. In 2007, my daughter Joanne and husband John, joined forces with me to run the magazine along with a sale management company. John has since gone on to better things (a government job) but Joanne continues to work with me on the magazine. She is very talented in the design department and is indispensable to me. Since taking over full production of the magazine five years ago, the work is very labor-intensive, and I just could not do it without her help. So that brings us to the present. Simmental Fo-cus is still going strong after 20 years, thanks to all of you loyal supporters. From the start, my goal has been to deliver an affordable, effective, grass-roots publica-tion, and that will continue to be “our Focus”!
