Quand il s’est réveillé,
Dans sa chambre d’hôpital très blanche,
Il s’est rappelé ce qu’on lui avait dit.
Les médecins, les infirmières, sa femme,
Ses enfants, sa mère, et même
Son patron et quelques collègues de travail :
Qu’il avait eu de la chance,
Que ça aurait pu être pire,
Qu’il l’avait « échappé belle »

When he woke up,
in his very white hospital room,
he remembered what they had told him.
The doctors, the nurses, his wife,
his children, his mother, and even
his boss and a few work colleagues:
that he had been lucky,
that it could have been worse,
that he had “escaped with his life,”
that he had almost died, poor him.
Him, he didn’t see what was miraculous about it,
or catastrophic.
What had happened, already?
He didn’t remember anything in particular,
but he had been told,
and he had seen the pictures of the car.
Apparently, there was black ice and no one else
on the road that night.
It wasn’t his fault.
It was necessary that he sleep, that he not worry himself.

Il s’appelait Henri Morbier.

On était au vingt-et-unième siècle après tout, non ?
Il aurait bien aimé que ce soit Harry, ou Steve,

His name was Henri Morbier.
The last name, there was nothing he could do about it,
but Henri, he found that to be a ridiculous first name.
We were in the 21st century after all, no?
He would have liked that it be Harry, or Steve,
like Harry Potter or Steve McQueen.
To them, at least, things happened,
adventures, danger.
But to him, nothing ever happened.
In fact, since he’d been born,
38 years earlier,
nothing had ever happened to him at all,
except for what happens to everyone, of course.
And then this dumb matter of black ice, of car.
It was indeed the first time
that he perhaps would have something
vaguely interesting to tell at the office.
In the meantime, it was necessary that he rest himself,
that he not think of anything.
Not so easy.

There were some stores, some soccer fields,
a castle on the river.

He remembered her well, with her too-tight shoes.
The drawbridge, the moat, the knights in armor,
at eight years old, that’s still fine.
He could see himself a knight, in those days.

The castle, in high school, he had gone back to it,
with girls, pals, cigarettes,
or a few bottles from time to time.
But, eh, he had gotten bored.
In order to be interesting, a castle
should have been haunted, horrible,
