6 SIMONA PE Ovoid Pipes 3/2006
The importance of ovoid pipes
has increased significantly over
recent years, prompted mainly by
the growing need for repairs to
existing brickwork ducts and
concrete sewers featuring ovoid
designs. Damages to these
One of the central tasks of a
sewerage system is to collect
and transfer domestic and indus-
trial waste water from devel-
oped areas without causing harm
to the environment. The sewage
must neither leak out of the
system nor seep into the ground
in an uncontrolled manner.
Similarly, external water must
be prevented from penetrating
the sewer. Thermoplastic
waste-water pipes provide maxi-
mum reliability and durability
due to the integral connection
created by welding.
High velocity of flow and high
capacity for backwater
SIMONA®PE ovoid pipes are PE
waste-water pipes with an ovoid
geometry. When the pipe is par-
tially filled (dry weather drainage),
a high velocity of flow is achieved
at the bottom of the duct – and
hence good hydraulic drainage
with a flushing and self-cleaning
effect. In the event of substantial
precipitation, a high drainage
capacity is available because the
profile becomes wider towards
the top.
SIMONA®PE ovoid pipes – shaping the future
SIMONA®polyethylene ovoid pipes have been designed for cost-effective sewer rehabilitation and installation.
Damaged ovoid profile with lateralcracks.
structures usually take the form
of cracks, holes, wear and tear
due to abrasion as well as bio-
genic corrosion.
Applying a patented manufactu-
ring process, SIMONA produces
polyethylene ovoid pipes for the
rehabilitation of existing brick-
work and concrete structures as
well as for the installation of new
systems. SIMONA®ovoid pipes
combine the benefits of the ovoid
shape – high flow velocity for
small quantities of water, improv-
ed discharge of large quantities
of water – with the excellent
material and processing proper-
ties of polyethylene.

High flow velocity thanks to smalldrainage cross-section at the bottomof the duct – for superior flushingand self-cleaning effect.
Standardisation
PE ovoid pipes are manufactured
in accordance with all relevant
standards, approvals and guide-
lines:
 DIN 8074/8075
 DIN 19537
 Static sizing in accordance
with ATV-DVWK A-127 and
M-127
Processing and laying of pipes is
based on DVS guidelines DVS
2207 Part 1, DVS 2208 Part 1
and DVS 2212, as well as the full
range of associated standards
such as DIN EN 1610 for new
pipe installation.

SIMONA®polyethylene – cost-effective and reliable
A long-term decision for sewage
systems
Due to the age of ovoid brickwork
ducts and concrete structures –
50 years and in some cases well
above –, there is an enormous
need for repairs within this area.
According to damage surveys
conducted by the DWA (German
Association for Water Manage-
ment, Waste Water and Waste),
the cost of repairing all the
damage to the public sewage
system in the short and medium
terms is estimated to be 50 billion
to 55 billion in Germany alone.
Given the enormity of this task,
it is absolutely essential that
repairs be carried out with the
aim of ensuring a long service
life. By using polyethylene ovoid
pipes, which have a very low sus-
ceptibility to damage, subsequent
maintenance (repair) and servicing
costs (cleaning and inspection)
can be reduced substantially.
SIMONA®PE ovoid pipes sub-
stantially minimise the causes
of damage generally associated
with leaking sewers, e.g. material
cracks, fractures, incrustations
(root penetration) or corrosion,
compared to conventional mate-
rials. The result: a significantly
longer service life.
Abrasion resistance (testing by
means of the Darmstadt method)
In sewers some of the waste
water flows at high velocity. In
addition, they often contain ex-
tremely high levels of solids. In
combination, this usually leads to
a considerable abrasive load,
especially at the bottom of the
sewers, and hence to pipe wear
in the long term.
Owing to their high abrasion resi-
stance, PE pipes are the material
of choice for this demanding field
of application. Indeed, tests con-
ducted by means of the Darm-
stadt method clearly demonstrate
the superior properties of PE
pipes in comparison with other
materials.

Creep under internal pressure
In the case of long-term assets
such as sewage systems, the aim
is to achieve depreciation periods
of up to 100 years.
One of the most important
methods of verifying the lifetime,
service life and useful life of PE
pipes is to determine creep under
internal pressure, also referred to
simply as “creep”. Even after 100
years at a continuous service
temperature of 40 °C no thermo-
oxidative decomposition processes
will occur in PE 80 or PE 100
pipes (see chart).
The long service life of PE satis-
fies the full range of commercial
requirements in terms of long-
term viability of structures.
Buckling test
Analyses of the structural sound-
ness of repair work on waste water
ducts and conduits using lining and
assembly procedures are perfor-
med in accordance with the ATV-
DVWK code of practice “Informa-
tion Sheet ATV-M127, Part 2”.
The following aspects are taken
into account as part of the tests:
 Imperfections (prior deforma-
tions) in embedding the liner in
the old pipe.
 Strength, durability as well as
stresses and strains associ-
ated to long-term exposure to
water pressure.
Inserting a PE 80 ovoid pipe in a concrete duct PE tee in an internal pressure creep test
Special buckling tests were
conducted on ovoid profiles in
collaboration with the University
of Applied Sciences, Bremen Uni-
versity and the Institute of Textile
Structural and Environmental
Engineering.
The buckling tests took place in
two sections with modules meas-
uring w/h = 340 mm/475 mm. In
total, there were 11 buckling tests
(10 small-scale tests with a
Test rig with measuring equipment: loading up to maximum buckling load

1 large-scale test with a module
length L of 2.200 mm) with four
different imperfection approaches.
The tests have shown that Infor-
mation Sheet ATV-M 127-2 is
particularly well suited for the cal-
culation of the stability of ovoid
profiles under external water
pressure as regards pipe condi-
tions I and II in existing systems.

SIMONA®PE ovoid pipes – simple installation
SIMONA®ovoid pipes made of
PE 80 and PE 100 are equally
suitable for trenchless rehabilita-
tion and open-trench installation.
SIMONA®ovoid pipes are inte-
grally connected to one another
by means of heated tool butt weld-
ing, thus making them absolutely
watertight.
For side inlets and service con-
nections, SIMONA offers a com-
prehensive range of fittings as
well as electrically weldable ser-
vice pipe solutions (external and

Open pipelaying in a bed of sand
The stability and service life of a
pipeline is dependent to a large
extent on the structural support
created for the actual pipe. When
laying plastic pipes, the pipeline
zone must be filled with stone-
free, compactable material (pref-
erably 0/2 sand) in accordance
with DIN EN 805 and then com-
pacted. The soil then has to be
compacted in such a way that the
pipe is protected against external
influences (DIN EN 13244). In
general, the excavated material
has to be replaced.

The pioneering internal saddle for
service pipe connection, designed
for electrofusion, is a state-of-the-
art product which allows fast,
cost-effective and traffic-friendly
repair of drain connections by
means of the trenchless method
– without any nuisance to resi-
dents.
Thus, elaborate, cost-intensive
repairs using open-trench tech-
niques are a thing of the past.
Connection to service pipes
made of concrete, PVC or stone-
ware is performed using a layer
of felt which is thermally integra-
ted into the connection collar. It
serves as an adhesion promoter
for a strong connection to glue-
able service connection pipes
using resin-impregnated, needle-
felt tubes.
The covered spiralsintegrated into thesaddle facilitate inte-gral, tight welding.

The service pipe end, in the form
of a socket or an elongated
connector, has been designed as
a ready-to-use electrofusion
socket, allowing direct connection
without any offset. The external
saddle is designed such that
standard and large-format pipes
as well as specialist solutions
such as ovoid ducts can be
connected fast and efficiently.
First, a precise connection bore
is made with the help of special
tools. The saddle is then moun-
ted and welded in place.
SIMONA® external saddle for
service pipe connection
The SIMONA external saddle for
service pipe connection is the
perfect solution for uncompli-
cated, homogeneous connection
of service pipes to PE sewer
pipes by means of electrofusion
welding – when installing new
