Simple and Compound Sentences
Simple Sentences
A simple sentence is a complete thought. It has a subject and a predicate.
The yellow pencil is very sharp.
Simple Sentences
Sometimes there are compound parts to the simple sentence.
The yellow pencil is very sharp and could hurt you.
The yellow pencil and the orange pencil are very sharp.
Compound Sentences
A compound sentence is one or more simple sentences joined together with proper punctuation.
The yellow pencil is sharp, and I will use it to write my paper.
(If you ignore the conjunction, you’ll see two simple sentences that would be strong enough to stand on their own.)
Identifying the Differences
Can you find two complete thoughts by covering up parts of the sentence? If so, it is a compound sentence!
