Simplifying Data Migration through Storage Manager

In addition to managing the lifecycle of user and group directories, Micro Focus® Storage Manager is also the easiest and most cost-efficient means of migrating user and group files, associated rights, trustee assignments and metadata. With Storage Manager, you can migrate data across Micro Focus networks or even from a Micro Focus network to a Microsoft network.

White PaperSimplifying Data Migration through Storage Manager

Data migrations are normally huge IT projects, requiring you to copy each file from a source file server to a destination file server or network attached storage (NAS) device. With potentially terabytes of data to move, the process can be tedious. It can also be disruptive to users who cannot access files that you’ve targeted for migration.

But it’s the post-migration work in migrations of this sort that really makes the process burdensome . The copying process resets metadata, time stamps and, most impor tantly, the rights pertaining to migrated data, making it necessary to reestablish these rights individually for each migrated file .

It’s no wonder that so many organizations delay migrating their data from old to new servers . For example, many Novell (now part of Micro Focus) network owners have resisted migrating from their NetWare® platform to the newer Micro Focus Open Enterprise Server platform . Unfortunately, many organizations, including most of these Micro Focus customers, are unaware that Storage Manager can greatly alleviate the data migration burden by providing the means to automate data migra-tion while retaining all rights, metadata and timestamps .

Storage ManagerStorage Manager automates management throughout the full lifecycle of user and group storage . Leveraging the network directory (Micro Focus eDirectory™ or Microsoft Active Directory), Storage Manager automates a comprehensive set of storage management tasks based on events, identities and policies .

Directory events trigger policy-based Storage Manager actions . Policies can specify:

Where to create user home directories and group directories

What specific files to provision inside the directories, along with rights and storage quota settings

Where to move home directories and what rights and quota to modify when administrators move users in directory services

And much more

How Storage Manager Enables Data MigrationsStorage Manager enacts data migrations within Micro Focus environ-ments by using policies, and from Micro Focus to Microsoft environ-ments using its Cross-Empire Data Migration subsystem .

Settings within Storage Manager policies enable home directory and group directory migrations from a Micro Focus source server to a Micro Focus target server . For exam ple, a policy setting can dictate how to move home directories residing on a NetWare server to a specific volume on an Open Enterprise Server 11 machine—and in the process, maintain all file rights, trustee assignments, metadata and timestamp information .

Recently, Storage Manager added Cross-Empire Data Migration . Cross-Empire Data Migration is a subsystem within Storage Manager that migrates file system data from Micro Focus networks to Microsoft net-works, including their corresponding storage infrastructures and identity and security frameworks .

Through a wizard interface, Cross-Empire Data Migration quickly and automatically moves data based on a variety of scenarios, such as mov-ing files for multiple users and groups directly to their intended loca-tions across multiple servers or shares in a single operation—all while preserving important file system metadata .

Data MigrationsMigrating data from one network storage device to another is an inevitable burden faced by all organizations at one time or another . Data migrations are necessary on many occasions and for many reasons, such as when:

Data outgrows server capacities .

You need to consolidate multiple servers to a single server or storage area network (SAN) .

You deploy a new network operating system .

Cross-Empire Data Migration supports three data movement types:

1. User storage: Migrates data from a Micro Focus home directory to a Windows home folder through either a source container or source file system path . You can also provision the Windows home folder as a part of this process .

2. Collaborative or group storage: Migrates data from a Micro Focus group home directory to a Windows group home folder through either a source container or source file system path .

3. Direct folder storage: Migrates a directory based on distinct file system paths on the source and target networks .

The remainder of this paper presents data migration scenarios and ex-plains how Storage Manager can simplify each .

Scenario 1NetWare to Open Enterprise Server 11 Data MigrationIn this scenario, you have deployed Storage Manager in the eDirectory tree of which both the source NetWare server and destination Open Enterprise Server 11 machine are members .

If you are already using Storage Manager to manage the home and group directories you want to migrate, you simply need to:

1. Edit the Storage Manager policy that specifies the NetWare server target path and change it to the desired target path on the Open Enterprise Server 11 destination server .

2. Use the Enforce Policy Paths management action to initiate migrations from the source to the destination server .

If you are not using Storage Manager to manage the home and group directories you want to migrate, you need to:

1. Create a Storage Manager policy specifying the current location of the directories you want to migrate as the target path for the policy .

2. Use the Manage management action to catalog the directories .

3. Edit the Storage Manager policy that specifies the NetWare server target path and change it to the desired target path on the Open Enterprise Server 11 destination server .

4. Use the Enforce Policy Paths management action to initiate directory migrations from the source to the destination server .

After you’ve run the Enforce Policy Paths action, Storage Manager be-gins the process of moving home and group directories, unless one (or more) of the following statements is true:

The home directory’s user is logged in to the NetWare server .

The home directory’s user has a file open from the home directory .

The move schedule does not allow Storage Manager to move the directories during this time of day .

Case Study #1Garland Independent School DistrictWith an enrollment of over 57,000 students, the Garland Independent School District (ISD) is the second largest district in Dallas County and one of the largest districts in the state of Texas . The district oversees two preschools, 47 elementary schools, 12 middle schools, seven high schools and other non-traditional education centers .

“I love Storage Manager. It’s one of the best things we have here. It saves me some time almost every day.”

ERIC FELDMANNetwork Services EngineerGarland ISD

The Enforce Policy Path option ensures user home directories and group directories are located in the target path specified in the policy . If the directories are not presently located in the target path, Storage Manager automatically moves them to the specified target path .

Eric Feldman is a network services engineer at Garland ISD and has relied on Storage Manager for years to manage the thousands of stu-dent home directories the district’s servers host . Recently, Feldman was involved in the migration of over 35,000 student home directories from NetWare servers to Open Enterprise Server 11 servers . The process was very simple because all the district had to do was change the target path and then run Enforce Policy Paths .

Feldman remarked: “I love Storage Manager . It’s one of the best things we have here . It saves me some time almost every day .”

Scenario 2NetWare or Open Enterprise Server to Microsoft Windows Data MigrationIn this scenario, you deploy Storage Manager in your Microsoft Windows network and use Cross-Empire Data Migration to move the data for multiple users and groups directly across multiple servers and shares to their intended locations . Furthermore, the migration maintains ownership, quota and metadata information while transforming Micro Focus rights and trustee assignments into equivalent Microsoft rights and permissions .

The following steps summarize the data migration process as documented in chapter nine of the Storage Manager 3 .0 .x Administration Guide for Active Directory (www.novell.com/documentation/storagemanager3/) .

1. Complete the prerequisite tasks .

2. Create a migration proxy account to enable communication be-tween the eDirectory source and Active Directory destination .

3. Create an identity map for associating users, groups and contain-ers that are the owners and trustees of the Micro Focus network data with the corresponding data owners on the Microsoft network target .

4. Use the data migration wizard to perform any of the following data migration types:

User to user data migration

Folder to user data migration

Folder to group data migration

Folder to folder data migration

Case Study #2Hämeen Ammattikorkeakoulu (HAMK) UniversityHAMK University’s main campus is located in Hämeenlinna, Finland . Student enrollment is approximately 8,000 and the university employs a staff of about 800 .

For the past four years, the university has relied on Storage Manager to automate the management of its student and faculty network home folders, which are located across multiple NetWare and Open Enterprise Server servers .

In 2012, the university switched network operating systems from Micro Focus to Microsoft . As part of this change, the IT staff needed to migrate 12 million scattered files located in more than 8,000 home folders to a single NetApp attached storage device . The IT staff chose to use the Storage Manager 3 Cross-Empire Data Migration subsystem .

The university was pleased with the migra tion’s outcome . Information and Communi cations Technology Specialist Sami Kapanen remarks, “NSM [Storage Manager] was able to migrate the files with ownership, date and trustee information included! This was a big thing for us .”

The Cross-Empire Data Migration subsystem features an easy-to-use wizard interface that lets you view and edit source and target objects and their locations . In this example, the contents of user home directories in eDirectory are being associated with user home folders in Active Directory .
