Hiring returns to pre-recession levels. After months of steady increases, nationwide

hiring returned to pre-recession levels in March. Job openings increased 4.1% from

February 2011 and 39.1% from March 2010, resulting in over 5 million job listings posted

throughout the month. The significant employment gains over the last year make up

only a portion of the total jobs lost in the recession, said Gautam Godhwani, CEO of

SimplyHired.com. But now that job listings are finally up to their 2007 level, we can begin

to talk about real job recovery.

Financial industry strengthens. The financial services sector continued to solidify,

gaining 6.1% in hiring within the industry, and 40.8% in hiring for Financial Specialists and

Accountants across all industries. This robustness was further supported by the return

of major accounting, banking and consulting companies to the top employers list in New

York, the nations financial capital.

Major hiring continues in healthcare. Healthcare employers continued to dominate the

Top Hiring Companies by Metro, comprising 45% of the list; HCA Healthcare was the top

employer nationwide, with 20,000+ job openings. While the healthcare industry itself

decreased hiring slightly (-0.6%), hiring for Doctors, Nurses, Therapists and Health Techs

across all industries grew by 4.2%.

Decreased hiring in Florida and Ohio. Seven of 50 metros posted negative changes in

job openings for the month, predominantly in Florida and Ohio: Tampa & St. Petersburg

(-3.9%), Jacksonville (-2.9%), Miami & Ft. Lauderdale (-1.7%), Orlando (-0.2%), Cleveland

& Akron (-1.1%) and Columbus (-0.9%). The seventh metro was Nashville (TN), which

declined -0.6% in job openings.

Employment Impact: Rising Oil Prices

Slight decline in transportation hiring. Less than a month after oil prices reached

$100/barrel, job openings in the transportation industry decreased slightly, by -2.2%.

While travel hiring gained a significant 21.3% in March, recent airline fare increases

and other attempts to offset rising oil costs indicate that the full impact on hiring in

oil-reliant industries remains to be seen.

Local Market Outlook

HIGHLIGHTS

Optimal hiring conditions in Austin. Newly added to the most populous metros list, Austin (TX)

had some of the best hiring conditions in March. Austin posted the highest month-over-month

increase in job openings at 21.3%, almost double the next highest increase of 11.4% in Grand

Rapids (MI). It was also one of the least competitive metros, with a 2:1 unemployment ratio.

Competitive job market in Las Vegas. Also newly added, Las Vegas (NV) entered the

employment report as the second-most competitive metro. With an 8:1 unemployment ratio, Las

Vegas tied with Miami & Fort Lauderdale (FL) as one of the most difficult places to obtain a job.

Industry and Occupation Outlook

HIGHLIGHTS

Increased travel hiring. Hiring in the travel industry increased 21.3%, the largest growth across all

industries for the month. This continued growth from January and February is an indicator of the

industrys improved health and the start of seasonal hiring, as the summer vacation season nears.

Construction hiring increases. While hiring for both Retail Salespersons and Financial Specialists

and Accountants continued to post the strongest growths, the most interesting change was the

10.1% increase in Construction and Extraction hiring. This first real growth in a long-struggling

industry is likely the result of increased residential construction and mining work.

Top Hiring Companies by Metro

HIGHLIGHTS

Accounting firms dominate in New York. Three of the Big Four accounting firms were top

employers in New York in March: PwC, Ernst & Young and KPMG. Such increased hiring from

accounting, banking and consulting firms in New York is a sign of the financial industrys renewed

strength.

Technology strong on the west coast. Tech companies also appeared bullish in March, comprising

most of the lists in San Francisco, Seattle & Tacoma and Portland. These employers included

Google, Apple, HP, Cisco, Amazon, Microsoft and Intel, all with around 1,000 job openings.

The U.S. Employment Trends Report is a monthly summary and analysis of employment

trends in the United States. These findings are based on monthly job seeker activity on

SimplyHired.com, which aggregates millions of listings from over 30,000 employment

sites, and data obtained from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Some findings may be

projected from recent historical data. Data may not be representative of all industries,

occupations and/or metro areas. Metropolitan Areas in this report are the 50 most

populous in the U.S., as ranked by the Nielsen Companys Designated Market Area (DMA)
