SECTION I

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

INTRODUCTION

The Simpson AC Ammeter Adapter Model 653IS a compact, accurate, wide-range instrument.When it is used in conjunction with a Simpson260* or 270 Multimeter, AC currents can be meas-ured over a frequency range of 50 to 3000 cyclesper second. This wide frequency range in generalexceeds commercial and military power frequencyrequirements.

The Simpson YOM-plus-adapter concept IS

completely unique in approach and versatility.Each of the adapter models, of which the ACAmmeter is but one example, provides specificmeasurement and testing capabilities at a fractionof the cost normally required for separate testers.

Each instrument is furnished with an Operator'sManual and four extra pin-type plugs. The fourpin-type plugs are used only when the Model 653is to be used with a 260 Series II (see figure 2 for260 Series II and Series III identification).

MODIFICATION KITS

Adapter Case Kit 401 for 260 Series III and 270.

Use of this kit is optional. The kit convertsthe 260 Series III or the 270 YOM produced priorto June 1, 1959. It consists of a modified casewhich permits latching the Model 653 securely tothe underside of the YOM.

Adapter Case Kit 402 for 260 Series II.

Use of this kit is optional for this adapter. Itincludes a modified case which permits lat7hingthe Model 653 securely to the underside of themultimeter, and also provides a 50 pA D.C. cur-rent range for the 260. The 50 microampere rangeis required for other Adapter Models.

CONTROLS AND CONNECTORS

BINDING POSTS

AC currents to be measured are applied to theModel 653 through two of the six binding postslocated along the bottom of the front panel. One ofthe binding posts (marked ±) is common for allranges. Each of the remaining five binding postsrepresents a current range for the instrument.

260 - 653 SWITCH

This is a convenience switch located at theright center of the front panel. It allows the useof the YOMwithout detaching the Model 653.

260 DIRECT JACKS

The 260 DIRECT jacks are located at the leftcenter of the front panel. When the 260 DIRECT -653 ADAPTER switch is in the 260 DIRECTposition, these jacks are connected directly to the260/270 input jacks marked + and COMMON+,

.1. Initial Adjustments

a. 260/270 control settings.

1. With the Model 653 disconnected, checkthe meter pointer position for zero indication withthe YOMin its operating position. If the pointer isoff zero, adjust the bake lite screw just under themeter. Refer to the YOMOperator's Manual for thisadjustment.

2. Set the '260/270 for AC operation.

3. Set the 2601270 range switch to the 2.5volts position.

CAUTION

If your 260/270 case does not have thelocking provision, avoid applying excessivepressure to the top of the Adapter whenit is connected to the VOM and used in theAdjust- A-Vue position. A modification kitwhich includes a new case with an adapterlock provision is recommended for optimumrigidity (see page 4).

2. Measuring A.C. Current

WARNING

Always remove all power from the circuitto be tested before connecting or dis-connecting the test leads, and beforechanging the range connections of theleads.

a. De-energize the circuit under test.

b. Connect a suitable lead from the ± bindingpost on the Model 653 to one side of the circuitunder test.

c. Select a second binding post which willprovide a suitable current indication. When indoubt as to the amount of current to be"measured,use the 25A binding post first, and then changeto a lower range if the current is within the lowerrange. Connect a suitable lead from this selectedbinding post to the other side of the circuit undertest.

NOTE

The test leads and connections for stepsband c must be adequate for the circuitunder test. The test leads must haveample current carrying capacity and eachconnection must be tight and offer lowres istance.

d. Record the 260/270 meter reading indicatedon the 2.5 V.A.C. scale.

e. Multiply the reading by the factor indicatedabove the range binding post used.

3. Using the YOM circuit while the Model 653 isattached.

a. Set the 260 Direct - 653 Adapter switch ofthe Model 653 at its 260 DIRECT position.

b. Connect the regular VOM test leads to the260 DIRECT jacks at the left side of the Model653. Proceed with the standard operating instruc-tions for the VOM, according to its Operator'sManual.

SECTION III

THEORY OF OPERATION

GENERAL

The Model 653 AC Ammeter consists of a cur-rent transformer, an accurate load on the second-ary and provisions for a voltmeter measurementacross the load. Any AC current through the prim-ary is transformer-coupled to produce a proportion-al AC current in the secondary. The secondary

current passes through the load resistor, producinga voltage across the load resistor which is againproportional to the primary current. The 260/270YOM reads the amount of voltage across the loadresistor which is indicative of the amount ofcurrent passing through the primary.

With the highly accurate components which areused in the construction of the Model 653 ACAmmeter, the accuracy of measurements obtainedis excellent for most applications.

Circuit connections for the Model 653 are thesame as for any other type of ammeter. The primarycircuit of the transformer is connected in .ser ie swith the circuit under test, and offers very littleimpedance in the circuit. The inductive effect ofthe transformer is negligible for frequencies upthrough 3000 cycles per second.

MAINTENANCE

CASE REMOVAL

To remove the instrument from the case, removethe four screws located in the four corners on theback of the instrument case. All of the componentsare attached to the front panel.

PARTS REPLACEMENTAll of the components of the Model 653 have

been engineered for many years of useful life.However, there are conditions under which partsmay become damaged or faulty, and require re-placement. Refer to the circuit diagram in figure 4to help identify and locate any suspected part.

In the event of any component failure, orderreplacement parts from Simpson Electric Companyor from any Authorized Warranty Repair Station.A list of these repair stations is included, begin-ning on page 14.

SIMPSON ELECTRIC COMPANY warrants eachinstrument and other article s of equipment manu-factured by it to be free from defects in materialand workmanship under normal use and service,its obligation under this warranty being limitedto making good at its factory any instrument orother article of equipment which shall within 90days after delivery of such instrument or otherarticle of equipment to the original purchaser bereturned intact to it, or to one of its authorizedservice stations, with transportation chargesprepaid, and which its examination shall discloseto its satisfaction to have been thus defective;this warranty being expressly in lieu of all otherwarranties expressed or implied and of all otherobligations or liabilities on its part, and SIMP-SON ELECTRIC COMPANY neither assumes norauthorizes any other persons to assume for itany other liability in connection with the sale ofits products.
