Thank you to each of you for your dedication and commitment to the work and mission of Simpson Senior Services and our family of communities. It is my honor to share these thoughts and feelings with you, as I enter retirement and Dr. Carol McKinley begins her work with you as President and CEO.

Simpson Senior Services is unique in so many ways.

As a mission outreach founded by women who cared for the wounded soldiers of the American Civil War, it has a legacy of

service founded June 14, 1865. Much may have changed since that first meeting to organize Simpson House, but the call to service is the same. I feel a profound sense of gratitude for the opportunity to have served an organization so fully committed to doing the right thing in the right way — for more than 150 years.

The men and women on the staff of each community are remarkable people. Among the memories I will treasure and value, are the opportunities I have had to grow and learn from so many talented, committed and capable colleagues. I have been continually awed and inspired by the commitment, love, and dedication of the many team members and associates who serve our residents so capably and faithfully.

Blessed are the people whose life work enriches their spirit and fits well with their personal values. I am fortunate to have gained deep personal fulfillment from my opportunity to serve elders with dignity in the context of ministry guided by faith-based values.

Celebrate the Simpson Meadows 20th Anniversary at the 2020 Gala!

On May 1st The Downingtown Country Club will host enthusiastic guests attending the 4th Annual Simpson Meadows Gala. Its 20th anniversary theme celebrates Simpson Meadows 20th anniversary! Generous participants will enjoy a reception, dining, music, Silent Auction and Door prizes. The wonderful evening, will raise money for the Caring Friends Fund and Employee Emergency Fund. The Committee is busy making 2020 the best yet! Enjoy these glimpses of Gala 2019!

In July, 2019, when Dr. Janis Moore-Campbell, Simpson

Senior Services (SSS) Immediate Past Board Chair, announced the retirement of Kim W. Williams, SSS President and Chief Executive Officer, would be March 31, 2020, the Search Committee knew they would have a significant and complex task. Selecting the

successor for a corporate leader, whose legacy of services at SSS alone spans nearly two decades, would be a challenge and have far-reaching implications.

Williams’ remarkable career in the senior living sector spanned nearly 40 years. He joined SSS in 2001 as Simpson House Executive Director, became Chief Operating Officer in 2003 and succeeded The Rev. David W. Powell as President and Chief Executive

Officer upon Powell’s retirement in 2004. Through corporate restructuring, Williams positioned SSS for growth and expansion of its mission. His thorough and strategic approach to planning led to the creation and implementation of the Simpson House Master Plan. The plan repositioned the Simpson House campus including:  building

the Cornerstone Apartments, renovating the Flanagan Health Center, adding new common spaces, and dining venues. Williams also oversaw establishing a Home Care Program, building two new affordable housing communities and implemented numerous campus upgrades and capital projects to benefit the Simpson communities.

Following a national search, The Board of Directors named Dr. Carol

McKinley the next SSS President and CEO, effective March 9, 2020. A veteran health care executive who has served in a wide range of health care and aging services organizations for over 30 years, she has devoted much of her education and career to the care of elders. Dr. McKinley is committed to elders having quality lives, being treated and respected as adults, and receiving the care and services they need to live to their full potential. She is active in strategic initiatives in the areas of person-directed services; dementia care strategies; technology advancements; renovating for relevance; and navigating new reimbursement models. Dr. McKinley has been an advocate for both state and national issues. She has spoken on the national and international level to advance the elder care agenda. Dr. McKinley’s academic credentials include a Doctorate in Administration and Leadership from the Indiana University of Pennsylvania; a Master of Social Work specializing in health care and gerontology from Boston University;

BIOGRAPHY

RICK HELLBERG, CHFC, CLU BOARD MEMBER

Philadelphia resident and Bucks County native, Rick Hellberg, is the

newest member of the Simpson Senior Services Board of Directors. Active at St. Luke United Methodist Church in Bryn Mawr, he Chairs the church’s Finance Committee and has been on several local non-profit and industry organization boards.

After graduating from Penn State Rick entered the real estate business followed by Connecticut General and its successor CIGNA. He held positions in sales and management, before being named as Executive Vice President of the Corporate Financial Services Operation in Philadelphia where he was responsible for Marketing CIGNA’s financial services to Fortune 1000 companies. Under Rick’s tenure, CIGNA had client relationships with 9 of the 12 largest companies in Philadelphia. After leaving CIGNA, he started PeterAlexander, a wealth management firm, in 1991 and continues today as its President.

Rick lives in Philadelphia with his wife, Lisa, and is the proud father of Peter and Alex. After his family, Rick’s admits his number one love is baseball. He played with the Radnor Raiders until 2006.

and a Bachelor of Arts in Social Work with a healthcare focus from West Virginia Wesleyan College.

Reverend James D. Anderman, SSS Board Chair reflected, “The search committee was fortunate to have a number of highly qualified and talented candidates to consider. Dr. McKinley brings a depth of experience and passion to senior living that will be assets in leading us into the future.”

About her interest in the position and her selection, Dr. McKinley said, “SSS is an organization I have always known about and admired. Its founding in 1865 as a Methodist mission fits my priorities and values. She recounts, “My interest in elder care began with my family. I attended West Virginia Wesleyan College in Buckhannon, West Virginia, where my grandmother lived. She was an amazing and inspiring woman. As her health declined, and I saw her challenges, I discovered my life’s work.”

McKinley says she looks forward to working with the dedicated team at SSS. “Every organization has challenges and opportunities. Among the opportunities I look forward to working on are technology systems that enhance and enrich quality of life for our residents and increase working efficiencies for staff associates. Options run the gamut from “Smart Home” technologies to a broad range of medical and safety applications.” She continues, “These kinds of technology systems go far beyond smart TVs, tablets and echo dots. They can be life changing for elders who are navigating changes in their physical, mental and emotional health.”

When asked about his aspirations for the future of SSS, Kim Williams reflected that he hopes SSS will:

y Continue to place a high priority on diversity — serving elders from diverse economic, ethnic and cultural backgrounds.

y Expand its mission through the addition of new communities, new services, and innovative programs.

y Continue to build upon its legacy of serving as a ministry to elders within the framework of faith-based values and principles.

y Enable elders to thrive and find meaning and purpose by providing ever-increasing opportunities for growth and enrichment.

One thing is very clear; Kim Williams and Carol McKinley share these aspirations!

HOW CAN I GIVE TO SUPPORT A SIMPSON SENIOR SERVICES COMMUNITY?

The support of generous donors enhances the lives of residents

and supports important programs at each Simpson Senior Services Community. There are many options for generous donors. One of these might be just right for you.

Cash: Perhaps the easiest is a cash gift (typically by check or credit card).

Appreciated Securities: Contributions of long-term appreciated securities give you a two-fold income tax benefit: a charitable deduction for the full present fair market value,

and no tax on the appreciation. Should the securities have a loss, consider selling them first and then donating the proceeds, which allow you to recognize the loss as a deduction.

Entrance Fee Refund: Residents who selected refundable entrance fee contracts have a special opportunity. You may use all or a portion of your eligible entrance fee refund to make a gift. It is as simple as signing and attaching a revised beneficiary designation to your resident agreement. Donors may make an unrestricted designation or designate their refund to one or more campus

Funds or even another qualified charitable organization or a congregation.

Bequest In Your Will: A bequest is a gift made through your will. You may include a bequest when you have a new Will prepared, or add a codicil to your existing will. Either way, it is a simple method for including a community that is near and dear to you in your estate plans.
