I am pleased to be able to share Simpson University’s 2009-2010 Annual Report

with you -- a report that draws attention to God’s faithful provision. It contains

several valuable components. First, we have listed key developments on campus

within the past year, particularly related to curriculum development, campus

improvements, and service opportunities. All these developments grow out of our

mission statement: As a Christ-centered learning community, Simpson University

develops students in mind, faith, and character to influence the world through

leadership, scholarship, and service.

Second, we have included a list of individuals, churches, businesses and

foundations that have contributed to the educational ministry of Simpson

University during the past fiscal year. I am grateful for the hundreds of people and

groups who have partnered with us.

Third, we are able to give you a financial report for 2009-2010. In spite of the economic recession, God continues to meet

our needs. We concluded the year with an operating surplus and a healthy increase in net assets. Great is God’s faithfulness!

I trust this report is helpful for you and will enable you to participate more fully in the educational ministry of Simpson

Here are a few of the accomplishments noted by

the Academic Office, Business Services, Enrollment

Management, Marketing & Development, and Student Development. We

are so grateful for your part in these blessings. Please continue to pray with

us for God’s future provision for Simpson University.

During 2009-10, Simpson University:

• Celebrated its 20th anniversary in Redding, marking the 1989 move from San Francisco.

• Unveiled a new logo and mission statement; rebranded and relaunched our Web site.

• Saw a 6 percent increase in traditional undergraduate enrollment for the fall semester, with undergraduate retention figures improving to 85 percent.

• Honored 371 students with a bachelor’s or master’s degree and 75 with a professional certification.

• Served 1,406 students in one of our undergraduate or graduate programs.

• Was named to the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll for exemplary commitment to and involvement with the local community.

• Appointed three new full-time faculty, in Psychology (Dr. Wayne Norman), Biology (Dr. Susan Monteleone) and History (Dr. John Ayabe).

• Appointed four new administrators: Dr. Sarah Sumner (Dean of A.W. Tozer Theological Seminary), Addie Jackson (Director of MA in Counseling Psychology), Jan Dinkel (Director of Nursing) and Marilyne Odegard (University Archivist).

• Celebrated with two faculty who completed their doctorates during the year: Dr. Danielle Beck (Psychology) and Dr. Mardy Philippian (English).

• Promoted Dr. Ann Miller to the rank of Professor of History.

• Obtained WASC approval for an M.A. degree in Counseling Psychology; a name change in one of Tozer Seminary’s degrees, from M.A. in Christian Leadership to M.A. in Intellectual Leadership; and a new off-campus site in South Korea.

• Graduated our first cohort for the Master of Arts in Education degree in Suwon, South Korea.

• Started the Master of Arts in Counseling Psychology program in the spring semester.

• Received approval from the California Board of Registered Nursing to offer a four-year Nursing degree (BSN).

• Obtained faculty and Board of Trustees approval for a new general education program that includes four thematic core courses, and a reduction in size from 62 to 51 credit hours.

• Obtained faculty and Board approval for Phase 2 of the Simpson University Curriculum Plan. cont. on p. 4

• Established formal partnerships with Sungkyul University in Korea, and Alliance Graduate School in the Philippines.

• Completed technology upgrades for 23 classrooms.

• Installed a mass emergency notification system on campus.

• Converted modular building 7 from general classrooms and storage to nursing offices and a clinical studies lab.

• Converted the Measell-Taylor resident director apartment to offices for the Outdoor Leadership faculty.

• Hosted more than 27,000 guests who have been on campus for events, tours, overnight stays, seminars, conferences, camps and church retreats.

• Hosted a town hall meeting for the community and Congressman Wally Herger concerning the healthcare debate.

• Hosted Ladies Night Out for 80 women students, put on by Shasta Women’s Refuge and the Campus Safety department.

• Shifted management of the on-campus coffee shop to Chartwells, our food service provider. The shop was renamed The Bean Scene.

• Implemented a new CRM (customer relations management) tool for student recruitment that serves all our student markets.

• Exceeded recruitment goals for the School of Education and A.W. Tozer Theological Seminary.

• Evaluated and overhauled the financial aid approach.

•Began to build a SEM (strategic enrollment management) approach, with campus-wide teams including Integrated Marketing, Financial Aid Advisory & Scholarship Team, Data Management & Technology Team, and the Retention & Student Success Team.

• Coordinated “Let’s Play Ball” spring fundraiser banquet at Big League Dreams with more than 300 attendees, raising more than $45,000 in pledges and gifts for a community baseball field to be built on Simpson’s campus.

• Exceeded our student caller program goal, raising $12,500.

• Expanded marketing and advertising efforts to include a billboard along Interstate 5 north of Redding.

• Added numerous new features and redesigned pages to the university Web site, including athletic game streaming.

• Hosted the university’s first Grandparent Day, with 49 grandparents and five parents attending.

• Implemented a new residence life model of one student resident director per building.

• Developed a more cohesive and extensive fall training program for commuter life student staff that included integration with other student life leaders.

• Held first Commuter Life End of the Year BBQ for the entire Simpson University campus. This event brought out 150 participants. • Launched the third residence life online survey. Nearly 300 residents participated with 93.89 percent claiming that living on campus had been a positive experience and they would recommend it to others.

• Held the 2nd annual “Waste Not” campaign/ competition in February with all residence halls participating.

• Implemented a new discipline model that incorporates Student Conduct Board hearings which provide an opportunity for all parties to be equally and fairly heard when facts are in dispute.

• Received a record number of film submissions and had record

attendance at the students’ annual EXPOSURE film festival.

• Launched the ASBSU (Associated Student Body of Simpson University) website at www.simpsonu.edu/asbsu. The ASBSU instituted a new ratified constitution and bylaws and operated out of the new structure.

• Served the student body through 19 clubs related to academics, ethnic backgrounds and hobbies.

• Organized over 175 Simpson volunteers in the 5th Annual Day of Service as we partnered with the city of Redding.

• Trained and sent 10 short-term mission teams during spring and summer breaks.

• Held the 3rd Annual Craft & Fair Trade Bazaar, which supports local artisans and fair trade. It was attended by several hundred community members.

• Raised over $140,000 to support our student missions teams.

Simpson students traveled to Haiti in spring 2010 to help with

earthquake relief efforts.
