How does Academic Mentoring work?

• Some Year 10 students received mentoring in y9• Aimed at students who are underperforming in

several GCSE subjects• Some Year 11 students are receiving academic

mentoring and received mentoring last year• Year 10 students will be targeted for mentoring later

this year• Letters are sent out to parents – you will be informed• Mentoring will take place at a fixed time for 20

minutes each week with Mr R Harrold or SLT• Students will be withdrawn from lessons/tutor time• A mentoring form will be sent home with the student

as a record and to communicate with parents• Students may be expected to attend Afternoon Study

in the library when the mentor recommends this

Subject Intervention

• Year 11 - 1:1 tuition in English and Maths to tackle underperformance

• Departments will be addressing significant underachievement in their subject areas

• Extra classes or booster and revision sessions will be available

• Progress Grade 1 will be recorded in student planner – do ask to see this or use SLG

• Tackling Underperformance in boys

Year 10 RE

• Students who did not sit the Ethics Unit (B604) in Year 9 will be entered - 18th January 2012

• Students who wish to resit this unit in January will be able to join the revision classes

• Intensive 6 weeks revision period planned to prepare for this in class time

• In the mean time they can use the revision guides provided by the college

• All of year 10 will take a second Ethics Unit (B603) on 15th May 2012

Year 11 RE

• The two final Units (Philosophy) B601 & B602 will be sat on 11th June 2012

• A few Year 11 students may wish to resit one or other Ethics papers B603 and/or B604

• We recommend these are done in the summer on 15th May when the department will be able to offer an intensive revision programme for them

Year 10 Science • Most Year 10 students in Science will be taking their written

examinations for Science A in the summer of 2012. The dates are as follows:

• Biology:   12th June am• Chemistry: 15th June pm• Physics: 20th June am

• The controlled assessments will be distributed throughout the year during normal lesson time.

• These students will go on to take Additional science in Year 11.

• Those taking only Science A over two years, and those taking Triple Science will take their examinations in Year 11.

• Science A will also undertake controlled assessments during lesson time: the Triple Science people have no controlled assessment.

Year 11 Science Module Resits

• The dates of the Science A module test re-takes are as follows:

Summer Exams for Year 10

• In addition to RE and Science, students who follow these GCSE options will also take an examination unit next summer 2012:

• Business Studies (25% of GCSE)• Drama• Geography

Work Experience – (Y10)

• Wolf Report – Work Experience will be organised in Year 12 for students who stay with us for 6th Form

• No formal WE in Year 11 for 2012 – 2013

• Relevant work experience is now very important for many university courses - more so than some extra curricular involvement – more career development

• Independent arrangements in holidays – WE or voluntary work
