Welcome to the 3rd issue of

“SINARAN” 2010!

I would like to congratulate the publi-

cation committee once again for their

efforts to materialize our 3rd issue in

succession. During the last 3 months,

a lot of major things have happened

in the School.

It is indeed my honour and pleasure

that I can update you about our con-

cerns and challenges via this me-

dium, our “SINARAN”. To remi-

nisce about our recent accomplish-

ments, do allow me to relate what we

will be invited to speak and educate

The School Leadership Programme (SLP) is an

ambitious training project envisaged by the Uni-

versity of Brunei Darussalam. It targets school

leaders and other senior school administrators.

The aim of the programme is to bring about

transformational change in school administration

that is vital to the success of the new National

Education System, SPN21.

The programme is hosted by Institute for Leader-

ship, Innovation and Advancement of University

Brunei Darussalam (ILIA) and conducted by two

world renowned consultants from the US-based

Action Learning Associates, Professor Dr Noel

Tichy and Robert Knowling Jr. These two princi-

pal co sultants, Professor Noel Tichy from Uni-

versity of Michigan and Robert Knowling Jr,

chairman of Eagles Langing Partners, have been

part of the A-list team from Corporate America

which helped achieve a turnaround in America's

education system in recent years.

It has indeed been a privilege for us, the SVSB

team represented by the Principal, Cikgu Akandi

bin Hj Abd Razak, the Deputy Principal

(Education & Training), Cikgu Hjh Hanita binti

Hj Hussain and the

Administrative As-

sistant, Cikgu Hj

Norali bin Ahmad

Juni to participate in

such an excellent

programme.

The programme

comprised of three

workshops con-

ducted from Febru-

ary 28 to March 3,

from May 9 to 11

and the final session, from July 11 to 12. In the

workshops, we were exposed to many new ideas,

such as new management tools and techniques,

and stimulating activities that moved us out of

our comfort zone. There were also times when

the sessions were stretched up to late evenings or

Sundays and had activities that drained our men-

tal energy. Nevertheless, the sessions were defi-

nitely highly informative and beneficial.

Each school team that participated had to come

up with a „transformational project‟ that would be

diligently monitored by the program‟s consult-

ants, who make weekly calls for updates regard-

ing progress made. It certainly felt like being

watched under the magnifying glass, yet it has

been an effective way to keep the project going

because without their support our progress would

definitely slow down. And as for SVSB, we are

By: Cikgu Hjh Hanita Hj Hussain

School Leadership Programme proud to have a unique transformational project

in the form of the school cooperative society

that has been launched successfully.

Another requirement was for our team to do

cascading workshops to impart the knowledge

gained from the SLP to all the school staff.

Three cascading sessions were successfully

conducted on May 6, May 29 and Jun 1. The

feedback received from the staff members re-

garding these sessions were certainly positive

and favourable.

It was also fortunate for us to have the chance to

meet the former and current Ministers of Educa-

tion during the programme. In the beginning,

we met YB Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Lela Dato

Seri Setia Awg Hj Abd Rahman bin Dato Setia

Hj Mohd Taib, the former Minister and in the

end we met YB Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Kerna

Dato Seri Setia Hj Awg Abu Bakar bin Hj

Apong who is the present Minister of Educa-

tion. Both the ministers graciously attended the

Question and Answer session and responded to

the inquisitive participants during the first and

last workshops.

rest under the vast blue sky. He felt happy in

the open and placed the old cloth bag under his

head for support.

It was getting darker and darker. There was no

moon and the stars looked like jewels studded on

a dark blue carpet. Lost in thoughts, he opened

the bag under his head, took a stone from it and

threw it into the sea. He enjoyed the “plop”

sound of the stone falling into water. He repeated

throwing the stones one after the other into the

sea as his thoughts carried him to his young wife

and sweet children at home waiting for his return.

He had no idea when he might have fallen asleep

but he woke up much before dawn. His hand felt

for the stones in the bag and took one and threw

it into the sea. The next time he put his hand

inside the bag he found that it was the last stone

and hurled it with much force. He looked at the

stone as the first rays of morning fell on it while

flying from his hand.

Oh, he couldn‟t believe his eyes! It was a blue

diamond as big as a stone! At the same time, he

was shocked too when he realized that he had

become abundantly rich and again poor during

one night! He searched for the stones in the water

but could not find even one of them!

Dear friends, we spend things we get hold of

even without trying to see what it is worth. And

the most precious thing that we spend carelessly

is time. Yes, time is the invaluable jewel that we

can never buy back. Once spent, it is lost forever!

Be wise enough to make use of the time at hand!

TIME IS MORE PRECIOUS

THAN GEMS!!!

On 7th July 2010, Sekolah Vokasional

Sultan Bolkiah opened its own SVSB

Cooperative Ltd. It was launched by

Pengarah BINA, Pengiran Haji

Safiruddin bin Pengiran Haji Metali. .

The main aims of the cooperative

society are:-

to apply the knowledge that stu-

dents acquire from class

to learn how to run a business as a

cooperative body

to gain profit from the business, and

to achieve the socio-economic goals of the

training imparted at the school.

The cooperative society has its own executive

committee members nominated by the school

management. The Chairman of the cooperative

society is Cikgu Akandi bin Haji Abdul Razak,

A mini tuck

shop has been

opened beside

the school li-

brary as the first

of the coopera-

tive society.

This tuck shop is managed by the students of Busi-

ness and Commercial Department. This will give

them an opportunity to gain experience in running

a business. There are various items for sale such as

stationeries, grocery, fizzy and soft drinks, snacks,

sweets, choco-

late, hot drinks,

instant noodles

and much more.

The manage-

ment team as-

sesses profit and

loss on weekly basis according to the latest re-

ports. It is highly encouraging to see that this pro-

ject is going on successfully.

Global warming and pollution have become very

serious threats to our planet earth. Global warm-

ing is the increase in the average temperature of

the earth‟s atmosphere causing climate change

and natural disasters like forest fires, rising sea

level, melting glaciers and many alarming situa-

tions resulting from it. Pollution can cause many

diseases including the most common lung and

respiratory diseases.

In view of such

problems facing us,

a project to pro-

mote ecological

awareness was

organized by SVSB

on the 3rd June

2010. It was named

„Project Bisai.‟

Led by Cikgu

Akandi Bin Abdul

Razak, the school

Principal, many

members of staff and students spent several days

going around the school clearing up rubbish,

trimming bushes and shrubs, planting new trees

and fruit saplings and beautifying the school

compound. A total of 300 palm and fruit tree

saplings were planted during Project Bisai. About

250 saplings of various types of palms were do-

nated by the Forestry Department and 50 different

fruit tree saplings were donated by the Agricul-

ture Department to the school.

Present at this important occasion as the guest of

honour was the Acting Director of the Depart-

ment of Technical Education, Mr. Denis Ho,

who solemnized the ceremony by planting the

first official tree and fruit sapling near the

school‟s administration area. Later, the Principal

Cikgu Akandi led the members of the staff to

plant the tree saplings.

Mr. Denis Ho in a statement said that he would

like to applaud SVSB in implementing the

“Project Bisai” as it is vital to keep our environ-

ment green and to promote „Education for Sus-

tainable Development‟ in Brunei Darussalam. It

may be well reasserted here that certainly, Mr.

Denis Ho‟s point of view is shared by one and

all at Sultan Bolkiah Vocational School.

On 21st January 2010, I left Brunei Darussalam

for Singapore to begin a once in a life time

journey. I was one of the four participants se-

lected to represent the Ministry of Education,

Brunei Darussalam to attend a programme on

Management and Leadership in Schools, coordi-

nated by National Institute of Education, Singa-

pore. On the day I arrived in the city, I

promptly reported at the National Institute of

Education, Nanyang Technological University,

Singapore.

The programme was particularly designed to

cater to the needs of Heads of Departments and

subject teachers working in schools, for their

professional development. I signed up for core

units in management and leadership in educa-

tion/school system. In addition to the core units,

I also undertook few electives on issues such as

Working with School‟s Stakeholders, Perform-

ance Appraisal, Team Work and Conflict Man-

agement, Programme Evaluation, Students‟

Management, and Professional Development.

Besides the traditional lecture and tutorial ses-

sions that I attended during the course, I also

experienced E-learning sessions, educational

visits and professional discussions. In addition, a

regional visit to Hong Kong was also arranged as

part of the programme.

Generally, words cannot describe how fortunate

and grateful I am for being given this opportu-

nity. The benefit and insights I gained as regards

the field of management and leadership are in-

deed invaluable. The learning experiences have

served to inspire and motivate me a great deal to

become a more enthusiastic teacher and confident

leader.

My MLS Experience 2010

By: Cikgu Siti Noor Azlina bte Hj Ali

Hassan

Personally, I feel

that the four-

month journey

has indeed pro-

vided me an

opportunity for

self-discovery

and growth.

Being away

from my home

and workplace taught me to be more apprecia-

tive of my family and the friends I have right

now. It was also a really good break from

routine office work!

My plan now is to share with SVSB the valuable

experiences and knowledge that I have gained

back there in Singapore.

However, I honestly cannot deny that I miss my

short stay in Singapore. It has been a wonderful

experience. But being back in Brunei Darussa-

lam, I also cannot deny the fact that there‟s no

place like home, as we all remember “home is

where the heart is.”

I was fortunate to attend a two week long pro-

gramme, “Enhancing VTET Policies and Prac-

tices through Evaluation Research” conducted

by Dr. Paryono of Seameo Voctech, Brunei

Darussalam from 19 to 31 July 2010.

The main objective of the course was to enhance

the knowledge and skills of the participants in

planning, conducting and using evaluation re-

search so as to examine the effectiveness and efficiency of VTET policies and practices.

Among the participants who attended the course

were administrators, officers and instructors of

VTET institutions from Seameo members con-

sisting of Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indone-

sia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines,

Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.

In my opinion, attending the course has provided

me excellent exposure to relevant methodologies

in the field of planning, evaluation and revision of

educational policies. I sincerely hope that it can

prove a turning point in my VTET career and

hopefully I can contribute to the sustained im-

provement of our institution.

During the training we have been taught a lot on

how to interpret data using various methods in

data analysis, perform and conduct a standard

research through surveys and data collections.

But the most valuable moment was the time I

had shared with all participants throughout the

course and built a good relationship with them

especially from our Asean countries, not forget-

ting the new local friends too!

SVSB offers warm welcome!

By: Cikgu Norhamizah Btr Haji Hamdan

Our school was much delighted to welcome new

staff members, Dyg Rahimah bte Abdullah as

Welfare Officer, Awg Zaidi bin Hj Tinggal as

teacher in Fabrication & Welding Section and

Awg Md Azbe Hidayatullah bin Zainul Ariffin as

Lab Assistant in ICT De-

partment.

Dyg Rahimah was ap-

pointed as Welfare Officer

of SVSB on 6th June 2010.

After she graduated from

UBD in 2008 taking Bache-

lor of Education, she

worked as relief teacher at

Sekolah Menengah Sayyidina Hussin for 3

months. Being asked about her first impression as

the Welfare Officer of the school, she said that

the tasks such as calculating students‟ allowance

and composing warning letters are very chal-

lenging. Yet she added that she enjoys working

and looks forward to contribute more to the

school.

Awg Zaidi joined FNW

Section as a teacher on

16th June 2010. He had

graduated from Maktab

Ke j u r u t e ra a n J ef r i

Bolkiah where he com-

pleted his National Di-

ploma in Fabrication

& Welding. He is keen to work in the school

being inspired by the staff and students who

are very friendly.

The new Lab Assis-

tant, Awg Azbe began

joined the ICT depart-

ment on 21st June

2010. A former stu-

dent of SVSB, he

completed PND in

Computer Studies in

June 2010. He is

pleased to be part of

the school and looks forward to do his part in

helping students to acquire knowledge and

ICT related skills.

They came back loaded with laurels: reflections on studies abroad!

the opportunity provided by the government for

furthering their qualifications and to study hard to

bring the glory of success back to Brunei so that

what they learn can be shared with the students

here.

Cikgu Iskandar Haji Taim is another instructor

who returned from the University of Wales‟ Insti-

tute of Cardiff in UK where he was a student of

higher National Di-

ploma in Biomedical

Science from Sep-

tember 2007 until

June 2010. He said

he felt unwell on

return as his body

had adapted to the

cold climate of the

foreign land, and it

had to readapt itself

to the climatic condi-

tions of the native land. And as he came back, he

was greeted by Brunei Students‟ Reunion.

“Even though Bruneians form only a microscopic

minority in UK, the natives respect us and estab-

lish good rapport with us through close commu-

nication. You can do your grocery shopping after

you have finished with your lectures, and it is

easy to get „halaI‟ food stuff too. I do not regret

choosing the University of Wales. It was all per-

fect for me – the environment, syllabus, social

life and much more. No matter what, one must

still find a balance between one‟s goals and the

situations there. Setting things straight really

gives a lot of valuable experiences that program

students to do real things like cooking and wash-

ing by themselves”, Cikgu Iskandar said.

By: Ernie Sahliza Bte Salleh, ND/CST/11

Many people, if given a chance would like to have

the experience of studying aboard. This stands true

about the instructors who are given the opportunity

to study abroad.

Cikgu Sufree Bin Haji Mohammad who has com-

pleted his bachelor degree in Mechanical and Ve-

hicle Technology at Bradford University during

the last two years

under Brunei Gov-

ernment scholarship

to pursue higher

studies, endorses

this view. Yet, it is

actually the most

difficult period for

any student in the

journey of one‟s life

as they are separated

from family mem-

bers, relatives and friends. They are also com-

pelled to accept and adjust to new lifestyle.

“Actually I cannot call it “normal” life, but it was

an experience for me, full of challenges and oppor-

tunities”, said Cikgu Sufree.

There in UK, mostly Cikgu Sufree utilized his

time for studies rather than wasting in useless

activities. But at times, he joined pleasure trips

with his colleagues to places of interest to know

Cikgu Siti Nurbaini Binti Mornee, who is now

heading the Business and Commercial Depart-

her bachelor degree in Technology in Entre-

years of study.

Mostly she enjoyed the time with her friends

cultures of different parts of the world,” Cikgu

Siti Nurbaini reflected on her experiences
