With 56 talented newcomers joining 35 experienced vet-erans, the William Paterson football team is poised to make its presence felt during the 2007 season. The Pioneers suff ered through injuries last fall, but showed their resolve by ba ling in every contest. Five of their losses came by a touchdown or less, as a few bad bounces were the diff erence between a winning and a losing record. Now in his third season at the helm, William Pater-son head coach Mike Miello and his charges are ready to use the lessons learned from last season’s challenges as they work towards a place in the upper echelon of the New Jersey Athletic Conference. “Last year, I think the thing we were most proud of was, that in spite of it being an injury-plagued season, the players maintained their commitment and continued to work hard every day,” said Miello. “Due to the injuries, in almost every game we had a lot of young players get valuable experience. It was a diffi cult situation for many of them to be thrust into, but it should really benefi t our team as a whole this year. “My optimism coming into this fall is based on a very productive off season program, and a strong sense of leader-ship exhibited by our upperclassmen,” he continued. “And, thanks to the two successful recruiting classes we have been able to a ract back-to-back, we have seen our depth and tal-ent level increase dramatically.”

QUARTERBACKS One of the positions hardest hit by the injury bug last fall was under center, as fi ve diff erent quarterbacks called the plays. One of those signal callers was senior Dan Lamego

(North Arlington, N.J./Queen of Peace), a heady leader who saw action in just three games, but is ex-pected to return to the starting lineup this season. One of the play-ers who stepped in to the void last season was John Woodson (Bloom-fi eld, N.J./Bloom-fi eld), who saw the fi eld fi ve times as a freshman and completed 19 of 36 passes for 204 yards and three touchdowns. A er a solid off season, Woodson will be ready when called upon this fall.

RUNNING BACKS A stable of talented newcomers will complement several ba le-tested veterans in the Pioneer backfi eld this year. Dual-threat senior Mike Vicci (Clark, N.J./Arthur L. Johnson) started all 10 games during his fi rst season in Wayne and showed the ability to punish defenses with both his running and receiving skills, leading the team in recep-tions (38), carries (118) and rushing touchdowns (four) to earn honorable-mention all-NJAC honors. Vicci was joined by Alex Gibson (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills), a blocking full-back who came on strong at the tail end of his freshman year. Senior Kevin Drakeford (Englewood, N.J./Paramus Catholic), a transfer from Robert Morris, showed promise during spring practices, while junior Shaun Puluse (Hale-don, N.J./Passaic Tech) arrives at WP following a 447-yard, two-touchdown season at Saint Peter’s College last fall. Rounding out the trio of highly-touted newcomers is senior Ira Guilford (Jersey City, N.J./Hoboken), who returns to the off ensive side of the ball a er playing defensive back at Troy in 2006 and seeing time at running back at Ohio State in 2003.

WIDE RECEIVERS William Paterson’s quarterbacks will have several game-changing receivers to throw to this fall, led by four-year start-er and 2007 captain Kareen Moon (Staten Island, N.Y./Susan E. Wagner). Already the Pioneers’ career receiving yardage leader (1,774), Moon is a three-time all-conference selection who also utilizes his big-play ability on special teams as WP’s kickoff and punt returner. Also returning to the wide receiver corp are junior Bruce Katkowski (Saddle Brook, N.J./Paramus Catholic), who has played 15 career games and has doubled as a kickoff returner (15.7 yards/return in 2006), and sophomore Joel Rivera (Hoboken, N.J./Hoboken), who has looked impressive as a football newcomer a er playing professional baseball. The tight end ba le will likely be a three-man race. Freshman Mark Engravalle (Hawthorne, N.J./St. Joseph’s) appears to have the inside track following preseason camp, but he will be challenged by sophomore Pascal Faustin (Irvington, N.J./Irvington) and freshman Peter Fra iccioli (Williamstown, N.J./Williamstown).

OFFENSIVE LINE Two returnees will anchor the Pioneers’ off ensive line, led by le tackle and team captain Chuck Pa erson (Sewell, N.J./Washington Twp.). The three-year starter will line up with senior center Ma Ford (Secaucus, N.J./Secaucus), who has been invaluable to the program because of his versatility and reliability. Sophomore John Reilly (Weehawken, N.J./Wee-hawken) made the move from the defensive side of the ball to off ensive guard during spring practice, and he will likely be joined in the starting lineup by newcomers Jeff rey Arista (Paterson, N.J./Passaic Tech), a junior transfer from Saint Peter’s, and freshman Devin Turner (Staten Island, N.Y./Su-san E. Wagner). Providing depth along the line will be junior Geovanni Molina (Jersey City, N.J./Ferris), freshman John Fontana

Senior Kareen Moon has shown his big-play ability as a wide receiver and kick returner, scoring 15 career touchdowns.

(Saddle Brook, N.J./Saddle Brook), freshman Brian Brandt (Union, N.J./Union) and freshman Joe Maurer (Emerson, N.J./Don Bosco Prep).

DEFENSIVE LINE William Paterson’s defensive line should be one of its strengths this year, as three returning players boast starting experience. One of the 2007 team captains, senior Brian Burd (Roxbury, N.J./Roxbury) registered 41 total tackles, including seven for a loss, last fall. He will man one end, and sopho-more Dan Nunez (Garfi eld, N.J./Paramus Catholic) will start at the other a er 23 tackles and three sacks a year ago. Senior Frank Musolino (Sewell, N.J./Washington Twp.), the other defensive captain for the Pioneers, has col-lected 55 tackles (32 solo), nine tackles-for-loss and 3.5 sacks during his two seasons as a starter. He will be joined at defensive tackle by sophomore Saul Garcia (North Bergen, N.J./North Bergen), who made the switch from the off ensive line last year and played in six contests as a back-up. Competing for playing time will be sophomore Keith Sayball (Milford, Conn./Foran) and freshmen Dominick Brown (Newark, N.J./Weequahic), Jeremy Ballard (Morris-town, N.J./Morristown) and Kenroy Morrison (Westwood, N.J./Westwood).

LINEBACKERS William Paterson may not be as experienced at line-backer as it is up front, but the Pioneers boast several play-makers who are ready to step into starting roles and show-case their abilities. Jared Burke (Egg Harbor Twp., N.J./Egg Harbor Twp.) grew and improved with each game as a freshman, start-

ing three times and making 43 tackles (28 solo, two sacks). He will likely begin the 2007 campaign at outside linebacker. Junior Mike Lamego (North Arlington, N.J./Queen of Peace) is expected to roam the middle a er spli ing time between back-up linebacker and starting fullback last season, his fi rst at WP a er transferring from Lackawanna Junior College. Round-ing out the group will be sophomore Angelo Sille i (Bel-leville, N.J./Hudson Catholic), who will

likely start at rover linebacker a er fi ve appearances last fall. Senior Brian Stone (Hopatcong, N.J./Hopatcong), sophomore Larry Brockington (West New York, N.J./Memorial) and freshman Santino Mangiro (Succa-sunna, N.J./Rox-bury) should see signifi cant action in back-up roles.

SECONDARY Junior and 2006 second-team all-NJAC selection Har-old Green (Boonton, N.J./Boonton) will be looked to for lead-ership in a young Pioneer secondary. Hard-hi ing from the strong safety position, Green led William Paterson with 80 tackles (54 solo) a year ago, adding fi ve interceptions and 13 passes broken up to rank among the national leaders in both categories. Green enters the 2007 campaign as a member of the Consensus Dra Services Preseason All-America Defen-sive First Team. Competing for time at free safety will be junior Wil-son Medina (West New York, N.J./Memorial), junior Dion Benjamin (North Plainfi eld, N.J./Plainfi eld), a transfer from American International College in 2006, and sophomore Corey Stanton (Ridgefi eld Park, N.J./Ridgefi eld Park), who came to Wayne from Muhlenberg College. The competition for time at cornerback could be one of the most interesting of preseason camp, as returning back-up Isaac Abankwa (Willingboro, N.J./Burlington City) and newcomers LaFrance Spriggs (Newark, N.J./Ferris) and Leer and Lauren Biddle (Sicklerville, N.J./Lenape) have all shown the ability to make big plays in the secondary.

SPECIAL TEAMS Senior Ricky Krautman (Franklin Lakes, N.J./Ramapo) is expected to handle the Pioneers’ kicking duties again this fall, a year a er earning honorable-mention all-NJAC honors. The Syracuse transfer averaged 36.8 yards per punt, includ-ing 15 inside the opponent 20-yard line to establish a new William Paterson record, and made seven fi eld goals and 18 of 19 PATs last year.

Senior Chuck Pa erson has been one of the anchors of the off ensive line as a three-year starter at le tackle.

Jared Burke came on strong at the end of his freshman season, securing a starting linebacker spot while contributing 43 total tackles.

One of the most accomplished high school coaches in Garden State his-tory, as well as an integral part of the football resurgence at Rutgers, Mike

Miello enters his third season as the William Paterson head coach in 2007.

During his fi rst campaign at William Paterson, Miello led his team to a 5-5 overall record, fi nishing the 2005 season with three consecutive victories, including a dramatic 20-19 win against No. 2 Rowan, a team that reached the semifi nals of the 2005 NCAA Champion-ship. Last fall, William Paterson showed tremendous resolve as the Pioneers played through a rash of injuries, particularly at the quarterback position. Two-thirds of WPU’s 2006 losses were by a touchdown or less as the Pioneers played a schedule that featured three eventual NCAA Division III Playoff s participants.

The hiring of Miello in 2005 as William Paterson’s 11th football coach a racted big, bold headlines befi ing the arrival of a man of his accomplishments. Of them, the one that ran in the Herald News said it best: “WPU Lands One of State’s Top Coaches.”

These words from Rutgers head coach Greg Schiano summed it up: “There is no one I can think of who is be er to lead the William Paterson program than Mike Miello. William Paterson is ge ing the best of the best.”

High school coaches across the state, not to mention college coaches across the country, have always had the utmost respect for him for his accomplishments on the high school level and then as an assistant coach at Rutgers University for four seasons.

In addition to helping develop a successful program at Rutgers, Miello built Ramapo and Hackensack into high school state championship contenders year a er glorious year. Much of his success came at Ramapo, where he was the athletic director and architect of the Green Raiders’ rise to statewide prominence from 1978-2000. In 23 seasons, they won four New Jersey state sectional championships and four Northern Ber-gen Interscholastic League titles.

Miello prepared his charges well, sending 148 of his players off to play in college. He coached Chris Simms, one of the top quarterbacks in New Jersey prep his-tory who is currently a signal-caller for the National Football League’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and another of his protégés was Justin O’Connor, who played in the 1994 Rose Bowl as a tight end at Penn State and fi nished his career at William Paterson before becoming an assistant coach with the Pioneers. Prior to his time at Ramapo, Miello guided Hackensack’s program from 1970-75 a er serving as an assistant in 1968 and 1969. During his head coaching stint, he led the Comets to the 1971 NNJIL and Group 4 state titles.

Miello began his coaching career as an assistant at his alma mater, the University of Rhode Island, in 1967.

William Paterson University President Arnold Speert (le ) and head coach Mike Miello share a vision of transforming the Pioneer football program into a championship contender.

The hiring of Mike Miello brought praise from coaches around the state. Here are some of the notable quotes:

“There’s no one I can think of who’s be er to lead the Wil-liam Paterson program than Mike Miello. Mike has had a profound impact on not only my coaching career, but on my entire life. William Paterson is ge ing the best of the best.”GREG SCHIANO, Rutgers University head coach who played and coached under Miello at Ramapo H.S.

“The majority of kids who play for us are Division III kids. Mike has instant access to every coach in the state, he has our ears. He will have the respect of us, the New Jersey coaches, immediately. We know what he stands for, we know how he’ll treat the kids. Mike’s a special person … This puts the Rowans and Montclair States of the world on notice, I can tell you that right now.”CHRIS OLSEN, head coach of 2004 North 1, Group 3 champion Wayne Hills H.S.

“Mike is a football coach through and through … He’s built relationships over a lifetime of coaching in North Jersey. People know him and they trust him. As far as a starting point for credibility, William Paterson has a coach that is well known in North Jersey and beyond. A parent who sends their son there will know they’ve got a coach who will look out for their son as more than just a football player.”TONY KARCICH, head coach of 2004 Non-Public Group 3 champion St. Joseph Regional H.S.

“I know him and I know what his goals are. The guy’s a winner. He relates well to coaches; he’s a coach’s coach. The bo om line is, you guys did a great job ge ing him.”KEN TRIMMER, head coach of 2004 North 2, Group 2 fi nalist Caldwell H.S.

“I’m ecstatic for him because I think he’s a terrifi c guy and terrifi c coach. It really adds to our possibilities as New Jersey high school coaches, knowing we could send our kids to William Paterson with Mike there.”FRED STENGEL, head coach of 2004 Non-Public Group 4 champion Bergen Catholic H.S.

“He’s been successful everywhere he’s been and success breeds success. He gives William Paterson credibility instantly because you know he will come in and take charge. He’s going to make things happen.”DREW GIBBS, head coach of Ramapo H.S.

He then had a one-year stop at Columbia University as the running backs coach in 1969, and he also broke down the game fi lms of college prospects for the New York Giants from 1981-84. Miello was a two-year starter at tight end for Rhode Island from 1965-66.

Off the fi eld, Miello’s involvement in the community has been acknowledged with numerous accolades. He has been inducted into the New Jersey Football Coaches Associ-ation, New Jersey Interscholastic Coaches and Ramapo High School Halls of Fame. In addition, Miello was named the YMCA and UNICO (Hackensack chapter) Person of the Year in 2004 and was the recipient of the President Gerald R. Ford Award from the All-American Football Foundation in 2003.

Miello earned a bachelor’s degree in physical education and health from the University of Rhode Island in 1967, and a master’s in administration and supervision from Seton Hall University in 1977. He lives in River Edge with his wife of 36 years, Diane. They have two mar-ried daughters, Dawn Williams and Denise Kelly, and a grandson, Patrick Michael Williams.

The nametag outside of Jerry Flora’s offi ce simply says “assistant coach,” but that

barely scratches the surface when describing his various du-ties and aptitudes as the Pioneers’ wide receivers coach and coordinator of recruiting, strength and conditioning, and the passing game.

Flora spends many nights burning up the phone lines to bring in fresh talent, and he gives potential recruits the lay of the land on their visits to the University.

Flora organizes the off season workout program that requires Pioneer players to be awake and ready to sweat at 6:00 a.m. twice a week, not to mention a rigorous weight regimen that also convenes four a ernoons a week.

He breaks down tapes of not only prospects, but also of up-coming opponents – o en weeks and months before they will bu heads with the Pioneers.

Plus, Flora mentors the team’s promising corps of wide re-ceivers while also off ering a helping hand on special teams.

Flora tackles these areas with the same passion each and every day as part of his tireless commitment to make the Pioneers a championship-caliber program. His diligence has helped the Pioneers recruit several all-NJAC performers, in-cluding WPU all-time career receiving yardage leader Kareen Moon, while also helping the entire team to become bigger, stronger and faster athletes since coming on board at William Paterson in 2002.

Prior to arriving at William Paterson, Flora coached at Divi-sion I-AA Iona College (1992-96, 1998-2001), mentoring the wide receivers as well as coordinating the special teams and managing alumni relations. He was a three-year starter at off ensive tackle at Iona before emerging as the starting tight end his senior year. In addition, he was the off ensive line coach at FDU-Florham (1997-98).

Flora runs JF Camps LLC for boys in grades K-8 in West-chester County, N.Y. He earned a bachelor’s degree in management from Iona in 1992, and a master’s in school administration from the same school in 2002. Flora resides in White Plains, N.Y., with his wife, Diane, and their infant son, Francis Michael.

Ed Stinson’s history with Mike Miello could be traced through several high school state tournament brackets: Stinson

at the helm of powerful Hoboken, Miello at the reins of equal-ly mighty Ramapo, the friends locked in an Xs and Os ba le for sectional championships. When Miello became William Paterson’s head coach during the winter of 2004-05, it was only natural that he wanted Stinson to oversee his defense.

A veteran of 34 seasons on the high school scene, Stinson guided Hoboken, the school he played for and graduated from in 1965, to six state championships in 22 seasons (1977-80, 1987-2004). Most impressive was his 224-61 record, good for a winning percentage of .786. This included a streak of 67 victories in 68 games that stretched from 1994-2000.

Much of Stinson’s brilliance was exhibited on the defensive side of the ball, as Hoboken routinely blanked tough Hudson County teams with a tenacity not o en seen in high school football. The Red Wings did so with his vaunted “50” de-fense, fl ying around and making the best-laid game plans go awry. That defensive expertise paid immediate dividends for the Pioneers. In Stinson’s fi rst season in 2005, William Pater-son was 12th in pass effi ciency defense (91.1) and 41st in both total defense (286.8 yards/game) and scoring defense (17.5 points/game) in the national statistics. Last fall, the Pioneers tied for second in the conference, and tied for 29th nationally, with 17 interceptions as three of William Paterson’s defensive backs earned all-conference honors.

Although Stinson made a name for himself on the high school level – he also served stints at Park Ridge (1981-84) and Pascack Hills (1985-86) – he is no stranger to the college game or to William Paterson, as he was the Pioneers’ defen-sive coordinator from 1975-76. His coaching career began at New Jersey City University (then Jersey City State) in 1970 and lasted through 1973. Prior to coaching, he played at New Jersey City from 1967-69 and earned induction into the University’s Athletic Hall of Fame. At each of his stops, his methods for cultivating talent were impressive. Several of his former players earned Division I scholarships; one of his former players, Carlos Perez, was on the practice squad for the 2005 Super Bowl runner-up Philadelphia Eagles.

Stinson graduated from Jersey City State College in 1970 with a bachelor’s degree in English education, and he completed a master’s in administration and supervision at Seton Hall Uni-versity in 1975. A retired administrator from the Hoboken school system, he and his wife of 37 years, Marie, reside in Secaucus. They have four daughters -- Stacy, Marie, Kristen and Erin.

A well-respected high school coach, Mike Katz joined the Pioneers’ staff in 2005 and mentors the linebackers while coordinat-ing the special teams.

Katz’s coaching career began at Paramus High School (1996-97), where he was the defensive coordinator. He as-sumed the same responsibilities at Cranford (1998) before moving on to coach the running backs, off ensive line and tight ends at St. Joseph Regional of Montvale when the school captured the 1999 state championship and was ranked No. 7 nationally by USA Today. He then went to Arthur L. Johnson Regional in Clark as an assistant in 2002, the year it won the North 2, Group 2 state title and was ranked No. 1 in Union County by The Star-Ledger. He also served as the head coach at both Mater Dei High School (2000-01) and Johnson Re-gional (2003), and was the defensive coordinator at Marlboro High School during the fall of 2004.

During his fi rst season at William Paterson, the special teams improved dramatically. The units ranked among the top four in every New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) category, and the team’s punt return average was 39th nationally. The Pioneers blocked three punts, two fi eld goals and two extra points in 2005, returning two of the punts for touchdowns, and the last-second blocked fi eld goal that sealed the victory against No. 2 Rowan was one of the signature moments of the 2005 season. In addition, Katz helped mentor linebacker Shadee Davis, who became the second Pioneer in school history to receive all-America honors when he earned a spot on the Don Hansen Football Gaze e All-America Honorable Mention Team.

During the fall of 2006, WPU led the NJAC in punting (34.5 yards net/punt) and ranked second in PAT conversions (18-of-19, .947). Junior Ricky Krautman earned honorable-mention all-NJAC laurels under Katz’s tutelage, landing 15 punts inside the 20-yard line to establish a new William Paterson record.

In high school, Katz played for the legendary Lou Re ino at Union and earned Daily News all-Metro honors as a center in 1987. He earned a bachelor’s degree in management and business information systems at Montclair State University in 2001. A business teacher at Marlboro High School, Katz resides in Cranford with his wife, Donna, and their three children -- Connor, Ryan and Jake.

John Ciurciu joins the Pioneers’ staff this fall as the defensive line coach. An all-conference and all-county running back at Elmwood Park High School, Ciur-

ciu a ended Valley Forge Military Academy before moving on to Rutgers University, where he played fullback for the Scarlet Knights.

Prior to joining the William Paterson staff , Ciurciu coached the defensive line at Paramus Catholic High School (2003) and nationally-ranked Don Bosco Prep (2004-06), coordinat-ing the strength and conditioning programs at each school.

The director of recreation in Franklin Lakes, N.J., Ciurciu and his wife, Jessica, have two children -- Madison and Luke.

Running backs coach Frank Marino is new to the William Paterson staff this season, but he is no stranger to coaching on the college level.

The former defensive coordinator (1974-77) and head coach (1977-80, 1985) at Ramapo College, Marino previously served as an assistant coach at Columbia University (1982-84), Ford-ham University (1986-91) and New Jersey City University (2000-01). This marks his second stint on the Pioneer staff , as he served as the William Paterson running backs coach dur-ing the 1981 campaign.

In addition, Marino also possesses a wealth of high school ex-perience, most recently coaching at Passaic (1998-99, 2005-06), Bloomfi eld (1993-97, 2000-04) and St. Mary’s (2002-03).

A graduate of New Hampshire College, Marino earned a master’s from Springfi eld College. He and his wife, Diana, reside in Norwood and are the parents of two grown chil-dren.

J.R. Sanguiliano brings a wealth of knowl-edge and enthusiasm to his fi h season of coaching, including his third on the college level.

Sanguiliano began his career in 2003 at his alma mater, Arthur L. Johnson Regional High School in Clark, as the off ensive and defensive line coach under fellow Pioneer as-sistant Michael Katz, who was then Johnson’s head coach. He also coached at Johnson in 2004 before joining the William Paterson staff in April of 2005.

Off the fi eld, Sanguiliano is a sales manager/broker for his family’s Century 21 real estate offi ce in Clark. He completed a bachelor’s degree in business management at Rider Univer-sity in 1997. Sanguiliano resides in Clark with his wife, Stella, and their two children, Nina and Dante.

A bright young coaching mind with a strong football background, Shawn Seabrooks played at Rutgers University from 2000-02, the la er two seasons while

current William Paterson head coach Mike Miello was on the Scarlet Knights’ coaching staff .

Seabrooks was a three-year starter at defensive back for the Scarlet Knights and earned all-Big East fi rst-team honors in 2002. He was also named the squad’s Defensive Most Valuable Player in 2001 and 2002. His career started at the University of Tennessee a er a stellar prep career at Eastside High School in Paterson, where he was a SuperPrep all-Ameri-can in 1997.

A 1998 graduate of the Rosa Parks School for Fine and Performing Arts in Paterson, Seabrooks earned a bachelor’s degree in sociology from Rutgers in 2003. A police offi ce in Paterson, he resides in Paterson with his son, Shawn Jr.

Former Pioneer Justin O’Connor returned for his second stint at William Paterson and reunited with Pioneer head coach Mike Miello, his mentor at Ramapo High

School. A standout tight end, O’Connor played at Penn State University and, eventually, William Paterson in 2001 and 2002.

O’Connor assisted with the tight ends in 2003, this a er a solid career wearing William Paterson black and orange. In 2002, he caught 20 passes and was an honorable-mention all-New Jersey Athletic Conference selection. Moreover, he was named one of the nation’s top pro prospects in the 2002-03 Pro Football Weekly Pro Prospects Preview. O’Connor started his college career on scholarship at Penn State, where he played in the 1994 Rose Bowl for the Big Ten champions, who fi nished 12-0 and were ranked No. 2 in the season’s fi nal polls.

Recently, O’Connor served a tour of duty as part of the Army Reserves in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba., and he was in the 101st Airborne out of Fort Campbell, Ky., from 1997-99. O’Connor is a fi refi ghter in Ridgewood and resides in Hackensack.

A William Paterson graduate who played tight end for the Pioneers (1977-80), Mike McCourt returned to his roots as a Wil-liam Paterson assistant coach in 2005.

This marks McCourt’s second stint on the Pioneer sideline, as he previously served as the tight ends coach in 1981. In 2005, he worked with the program’s running backs before turning his focus to the off ensive line in 2006.

McCourt spent 23 years on the high school level. Prior to serving as the defensive coordinator/wide receivers coach at Waldwick High School in 2004, he was the defensive coor-dinator/off ensive line coach at Cresskill High School (1992-2003) and Sidney (N.Y.) High School (1989-90). A er leaving William Paterson, he mentored the off ensive and defensive lines at Elsik High School in Houston (1983-88).

A 1977 graduate of Brick Township High School, McCourt is a special education teacher at Cresskill High School. He completed bachelor’s (1982) and master’s (1997) degrees in special education at William Paterson. McCourt resides in West Milford with his wife, Karen. They have three children -- Maggie Lynn, Kelly and Kyle.

A two-time all-NJAC selection at de-fensive back, Dan Casasnovas recorded 122 tackles, nine interceptions and six blocked kicks in three seasons (2004-06).

The Pioneers’ 2006 record may have said 1-9 over-all, but William Paterson had chances to win almost every ballgame last season. Five of the scoring margins were seven or fewer points, and in back-to-back out-ings, William Paterson was defeated on the fi nal play of the game. A fi eld goal as time expired gave Western Connecticut a 20-17 win in Wayne Oct. 7, and an over-time touchdown li ed The College of New Jersey to a 27-21 victory Oct. 14. Injuries also played a major role, particularly under center. Three diff erent Pioneers started at quarterback during the 2006 campaign, and a total of fi ve diff erent players called the signals during the 10-game schedule.

Wide receiver Kareen Moon (Staten Island, N.Y./Susan E. Wagner) has already le a permanent impression on the WPU career record books follow-ing his third season as a Pioneer. At The College of New Jersey Oct. 14, he became the program’s leader in receiving yards, breaking the previous record of 1,346 (Lance Sisco, 1975-78), and he fi nished the season with 1,774 yards. Moon enters his senior year with 13 career touch-down receptions, just three away from matching the school record of 16 (Lance Sisco, 1975-78), and 122 receptions, 16 away from taking over the top spot from Bryant Richardson (137, 2000-03). Junior Ricky Krautman (Franklin Lakes, N.J./Ramapo) landed 15 punts inside the opponent 20-yard line, a mark that eclipsed the previous best of 11 (Mickey Hulse, 1999).

Several Pioneers were acknowledged for their out-standing play with 2006 postseason awards. Junior wide receiver Kareen Moon (Staten Island, N.Y./Susan E. Wagner) was named to the All-New Jer-sey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Off ensive First Team, while junior off ensive lineman Tim Dolan (Vernon, N.J./Vernon) and sophomore safety Harold Green (Boonton, N.J./Boonton) were selected to the All-Sec-ond Team. The Pioneer football team plays its home games at Wightman Stadium, an on-campus facility that was renovated in 2004. Included in the upgrades was the installation of A-Turf, a state-of-the-art synthetic grass-like surface that provides excellent playing conditions, even in the worst of weather. Also equipped with lights and a press box, the 3,000-seat Wightman Sta-dium combines a fan-friendly football se ing with the amenities of a fi rst-class stadium.
