Christmas in Southbeing in mid-surmer is like July 4th in America, i t is a time of outdoor canping, cooand other hot weather activities. Like ether countries in the southern hemisphere SoAfricans are slowly leaving tne snowy Christmas card concepts of Christmas and Christmtrees with art if icial snow are becorrLng rare as they develop their own Christmas tradusually at tne beach, around the barbeque or pool Very different for us, but certainurpleasant or detracting from our- worship of ^our^God who created the whole world withi t s seasons and times and who gave us the Lord Jesus Christ, His son to save us frcsii os i n s and whose b i r t h we remember.

KWAZULU T O D A YWe joined the work of the South African Church

ofChristmission and worked in fellowship with ourother missionaries in the Republic. We confined ourwork to Zululand and the city of Durban. Ofnecessity, ou r work r equi re s permi ts from theKwaZulu government fo r us to be present inKwaZulu, for any reason, because KwaZulu is thenew semi-independent government of the Zulunation. Old Zululand is being replaced by a Zulugoverned but multi-fi-agmented nation within anation, known as Kwa (the place of) Zulu. Townslike Eshowe become white islands in a black sea,and on many roads KwaZulu begins 10 meters fromthe edge of the road. Permits a re readi ly g iven tolegi timate miss ionaries , and no res tr ic tions areimposed on them as to teaching and preaching, buttw o other South Afr ican homelands Transkei , andB o p h u t h a t s w a n a h a v e a l r e a d y becomeindependent countries and we now need passportsand visas to visit them today. KwaZulu is slated fo rindependence a t some yet unannounced future date, but by which t ime the majori ty ofour Zulu churcheswill be independent and indigenous.

We believe the final product of th e missioenterprise is th e in dependent ch urch thats tand , under God and th e Lordship of Chrisitself The missionary then works essentiallymany churches, groups of people formedcongregations, and is a teacher, inst ructingleaders who in turn teach others of their own peand l ead the people to Christ. In bridging thebetween distant cultures we feel this is a prmethod of Church Growth. These were our ga n d t h is i s w h a t w e did:1 The primary goal was to s t a r t

congregations. Churches of Christ.2 Teaching the leaders was the second mgoal. We designed a funct iona l ex tenleadership training program (ELT) usinwell known and mission-field proven TEEcepts, that are designed to educate th e exileaders, in their own language, withourupting their work or productive relationto their society, extracting them from theitural environment or removing them fromh o m e s a n d f a m i l i e s .
