The walk

1 From the community centre car park walk back out on to Sinfin Lane, danger - road, and cross over, bearing left to the path opposite.

In the late 19th, early 20th century, Sinfin was a tiny hamlet, centred around today’s junction of Sinfin Lane and Redwood Road nearby. Only a few buildings from this period survive today.

Walk along this path, adjoining Sinfin Lane, turning right at the blue cycle sign towards the district centre. Please be aware that cyclists are also allowed to use this path.

The area you are walking through is part of the Sinfin Moor Park Local Nature Reserve, declared in 2008. Habitats include scrub, grassland, woodland and ponds. Hedgerows form an extensive network of wildlife corridors across the site, linking the open countryside beyond with Sinfin. For more information email the Friends of Sinfin Moor Park Local Nature Reserve on [email protected] or telephone 01332 763412.

At the next blue cycle sign, keep following the tarmac path. Just before the subway under Arleston Lane, either turn left up the path and go over the pedestrian crossing, or go through the subway, up the ramp and follow the path on your left back towards the crossing.

2 Then walk along Arleston Lane, away from the crossing, following the line of trees on your right, going over the exit and entrance delivery roads to Asda. At Harrier Way, cross over the road, danger - road, and turn right. Continue along the path to the right of The Eyrie road sign. At 56 Kestrels Croft, turn left into the public open space.

The administrative boundary between Derby City Council and South Derbyshire District Council runs along the rear boundary of properties on Kestrels Croft. The housing area beyond is known as Stenson Fields and was built between the early 1970s and late 1990s.

Go straight on and at the junction of paths marked by a black litter bin, turn right and follow the path through to Glendon Road. You are now in South Derbyshire. Cross over Glendon Road, danger - road, and turn right and then left in to Glencroft Drive. After a short while you will reach the junction with Tregony Way, marked by an electricity pylon on your left. Turn left here in to Tregony Way - dead end road. After a short distance, the path goes through a gap in the hedgerow and out on to Fox Close. Walk along Fox Close, roughly following the line of pylons. At the end of Fox Close, cross over Quick Hill Road, danger - road, and turn right, and then left through public open space following the line of pylons. Continue on, ignoring any paths on your right, until you reach Zetland Crescent. Here turn right and continue along this road until you reach its junction with Beaufort Road. Turn right and then right again on to Wragley Way. At the junction of Wragley Way and Stenson Road, cross over Wragley Way.

3 Turn left along Stenson Road. Take in the increasing views all around as you go up the fairly steep slope to the bridge over the A50. Beyond the bridge, after a short while, you will reach the village of Stenson. Cross over the road at Holly Cottage, danger - busy road, and continue through the village. Where the road bears left, follow the road, crossing over the entrance to The Bubble Inn on your right, and keeping to the left of the Stenson Lock Coffee Shop. There is no pavement along this stretch of road. It is always busy, so take extra special care, particularly when crossing the canal bridge.

Stenson and the Trent and Mersey Canal were designated a conservation area in 1994. Stenson Lock is claimed to be the deepest on the canal.

Cross over bridge number 19 of the canal. Then cross over the road, danger - busy road, and follow the towpath marked by the public footpath sign.

4 Walk alongside the canal, danger - deep water, for the next kilometre until you reach bridge number 18. Go under the bridge and then take the steep path on the right, out in to the hamlet of Arleston, which is almost equally split either side of the canal, and railway line.

5 Turn right, back over the canal bridge along Arleston Lane, danger - road. Pass by Arleston House Farm on your right.

Arleston House Farm is mentioned in LTC Rolt’s classic travel book ‘Narrow Boat’.

As you continue up the hill towards the bridge over the A50, again look all around you at the increasing views. Beyond the A50, continue along Arleston Lane until you reach Wragley Way.

6 Cross over Wragley Way, danger - busy road, and walk along the left hand pavement of Arleston Lane. After crossing Broom Close, danger - road, you are back in the administrative area of Derby City Council.

Continue on, crossing over Harrier Way, danger - busy road, to retrace your steps from earlier, until you reach a blue cycle sign, the second one mentioned under point 1. At this point, leave the tarmac path which bears left and continue straight on through open grassland, part of the local nature reserve.

Pass by a seat and continue towards the green pumping station. Beyond the station, turn right on to Sinfin Lane, danger - road, and then turn left, almost immediately, at a wooden stile and footbridge (slippy surface). Continue straight on through the local nature reserve, going over a culvert marked by metal railings, and then bearing left at the wooden local nature reserve sign. Continuing left, walk along the edge of the playing fields, keeping to the right of the trees in the distance. Beyond these trees, bear left towards a green metal seat and then bear right, continuing along the tarmac path. Follow the tarmac path as it bears left, passing by a children’s play area on your left. Just before the community centre take the path on the left, which will take you back in to the car park to finish the walk.
