After 25 years as a professional singer, working with The Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra,
Netherlands Opera, English National Opera and Opera Australia, I was in charge of running a major singing competition here in Australia.

My wife Cheryl had been a competition winner when we met. She was selected as
the Australian representative for The Metropolitan Opera Finals in New York. She won many other competitions and awards.
I realised that there were very few resources to help young singers pursue a professional
career through song contests and scholarships. Many winners, but not the
information in one place.
Australian singers have featured in several big competitions overseas. The Paris Opera
Competition, Neue Stimmen International Singing Competition, and Obraztsova International
Competition Of Young Opera Singers were won by Australians. That could be you!
What I have found is that there is something that follows winners. Want to know what it is?
Can you guess?
SUCCE$$
Seriously, you can see patterns of progress in winners’ ways. I think of it like this:
Success leaves traces. You can follow winners better when you know
what has made them winners.
This is not a new way to sing. You don’t need to fire your teacher or coach. Just think about
what it will take to become number one. Again and again and again.
We will cover
1. bad habits and what can go wrong
2. how to take control in your preparation
3. a system that wins
1. bad habits and what can go wrong
- musical (not counting, late entries, rushing when nervous)- physical- emotional
1. bad habits and what can go wrong- musical - physical (cramped posture, hands shake, dry mouth)- emotional
1. bad habits and what can go wrong
- musical- physical- emotional (too overwhelmed to perform well, can’t smile and acknowledge audience, not ‘present’ in performance
How do you overcome these bad habits? Fear versus Competence + Confidence Panic versus practice + performance
What do you practice?
When you start learning a new song, which part do you look at first? Words or music?
When you read a book, do you sneak a look at the end to see how it will finish?
Right brain = words Left brain = music
Whole brain = whole performance
2. how to take control in your preparation - find out what winners do- use their strategies - refine them for your success
2. how to take control in your preparation- find out what winners do(song choice, dress for success, complete preparation)- use their strategies - refine them for your success
2. how to take control in your preparation- find out what winners do- use their strategies(they may work for you, they may work once but not again, you may need to develop your own)- refine them for your success
2. how to take control in your preparation- find out what winners do- use their strategies- refine them for your success(mindmap, list all your needs, who is helping you)
3. a system that wins - proven winning system - works for any voice and any style - saves time and effort
3. a system that wins - proven winning system(success stories, judges view, interview) - works for any voice and any style - saves time and effort
3. a system that wins - proven winning system - works for any voice and any style (Tenor winner, Soprano winner, not the favourite) - saves time and effort
3. a system that wins - proven winning system - works for any voice and any style - saves time and effort (follow plan, keep healthy, allow for changes)
3. a system that wins - proven winning system - works for any voice and any style - saves time and effort
So maybe you want to win the competitions this year and you’re not sure what it takes, or how to go about it …
It may be that this would be the first big competition for you or possibly you want to win the prize money to allow you to study further or work at a higher level. Whatever it is, it may be because you …
You just want to win and haven’t cracked it yet. I know when I was starting out like you, I found it was very hard to find the answers to figure out what works best, what to look out for, and what to wear. You can laugh, but your look is very important.
Then I came to realise that having a system or plan I could follow was what I needed to win at the highest level and be respected for taking a professional approach to what was the start of my career. So I asked …
… one of my students I work with how things had changed after knowing how to win. He now knows what it takes to prepare to win after winning two top competitions last year. Another young lady said she can’t believe how easily she can do it. But what about you?
Questions?
That one thing…
