Professor Yang Chen-Ning, a world-famous physicist, is the first Chinese Nobel Prize winner. Prof Yang has been elected a Fellow of the American

Physical Society, the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Academia Sinica, and the Russian Academy of Sciences. He is currently the Honorary Director of the Institute of Advanced Studies at Tsinghua University. He is also the Honorary Advisor of SCFA,Tan Kah Kee International Association and the Singapore Tan Kah Kee Foundation.

Prof Yang has made great contributions to the relationship between Singapore and China, as well as the development of science and education in Singapore. In the 1980s, Prof Yang was entrusted by Dr Goh Keng Swee, the then Deputy Prime Minister of Singapore, and successfully invited about 10 to 20 Chinese scholars who had been studying in the United States to work in Singapore. Dr Goh also consulted Prof Yang on the cooperation in the field of science, technology and economy between Singapore and China.

SCFA Reception to bid Farewell to Minister Counsellor Mr Fang Xinwen and to Welcome Minister Counsellor Mr Zhang Xumin

On 30th June 2018, SCFA hosted a reception dinner to bid farewell to Minister Counsellor Mr Fang Xinwen,

meanwhile also to welcome Minister Counsellor Mr Zhang Xumin. At the dinner, SCFA President Prof Phua Kok Khoo thanked Mr Fang for his relentless contributions in promoting people-to-people exchanges between Singapore and China, followed by an appreciation token presented to Mr & Mrs Fang. Prof Phua also gave a warm welcome to Mr Zhang and reaffirmed that SCFA would continue to strengthen exchanges and cooperation between the two countries in various field such as culture, education, business and technology.

SCFA Welcome Reception to Chinese Ambassador to Singapore, HE Mr Hong Xiaoyong

On 21st March 2018, SCFA organized a welcome reception to the newly

appointed Chinese Ambassador to Singapore, HE Mr Hong Xiaoyong, at Shangri-la Hotel. The reception was also marked as celebration of the Chinese Spring Festival. HE Mr Hong and his wife, Mrs Yu Weiwei attended the Dinner. SCFA President Prof Phua Kok Khoo and wife, Mrs Doreen Liu , SCFA Honorary Advisors, Prof Wang Gungwu, Prof Su Guaning, Dr Ker Sin Tze were also present.

Prof Phua delivered warm welcome to HE Mr Hong Xiaoyong and Mrs Hong. He also announced that SCFA will continue to work harder in strengthening the relations between Singapore and China. HE Mr Hong expressed his gratitude towards the guests as well as the organizer. He appreciated

that SCFA for organizing varieties of event and the efforts in promoting people-to-people relations between Singapore and China. As the Chinese Ambassador to

Singapore, he looks forward to working hard and closely with Singapore friends to take the special friendship to the next level.

of Science and Technology, Tsinghua Alumni Association (Singapore), Peking University Alumni Association (Singapore) and Singapore Teochew Doctorate Society, to bid farewell to Minister Counsellor Mr Zheng Chao, meanwhile also to welcome Minister Counsellor Mrs Zhong Manying. At the dinner, Prof Phua thanked Mr Zheng for his relentless contributions in promoting businesses between Singapore and China, followed by a appreciation token presented to Mr Zheng. He also gave a warm welcome to Mrs Zhong, and reaffirmed that SCFA would continue to strengthen cooperation between the two countries in various fields such as culture, business and technology.

10 AM | Visited The Chinese People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign CountriesPresident Li Xiaolin, on behalf of the Chinese People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries received the delegation of SCFA with warmth. She expressed her gratitude towards SCFA in strengthening the friendship between two nations. Prof Phua Kok Khoo, SCFA President introduced the mission of SCFA in recent years and expressed willingness to cooperate with China. Prof Phua has also invited President Li to visit Singapore.

12 PM | Visited Professor Yang Chen-NingThe delegation paid a visit to Nobel laureate physicist Professor Yang Chen-Ning, the SCFA Honorary Advisor at Institute for Advanced Study, Tsinghua University to expressed gratitude and respect. After the meeting, the delegation presented gifts to Professor Yang and took a group photo.

2.30 PM | Visited Peking UniversityDr Tian Gang, Vice President of Peking University delivered a welcome speech to the delegation of SCFA. He briefly introduced the overall arrangement of PKU and on the topic of academic, higher education, and publishing discussed with the delegation. Prof Phua, SCFA President pointed out that academic research in Asia should establish its own research system and organizations, instead of following the trend in the West. SCFA has also

Prof Phua, SCFA President emphasised that SCFA was dedicated in promoting people-to-people friendship collaboration in different sectors such as science technology, education etc. In addition, SCFA has also took up the responsibilities to help Singaporean to connect with China and promote a better understanding of Chinese culture.

Prof Phua, SCFA President pointed out that Singapore and China have maintained a long-standing and greatly prioritized close relationship more than 20 years, Singapore shall play its special and positive role in the process of further improving China-Asean relations, to expand strategic partnerships with top institutions in China.However, Singapore struggles to keep up with the pace of cultural change in China, especially the new generation, he added. Thus, SCFA will organise more cultural, educational and discussion events and festivities to promote spontaneous cultural interests of the general public and to develop their understanding of culture.

4.30 PM | Visited China Soong Ching Ling Foundation (CSCLF)The delegation were given a guided tour of the various facilities of the centers during the visit to CSCLF and Soong Ching Ling Youth Science & Technology Cultural Exchange Center by Deputy Director Ren Haifeng and Su Hongtao. They have share the experiences of both countries in promoting and managing the arts and culture as well as to encourage the provision of training opportunities for artists, art administrators and art educators in all aspects of cultural and artistic development. Prof Phua, SCFA President hoped that both countries can develop closer cooperation in the future.

6.30 PM | Dinner reception to friends of SCFA SCFA invited officials from the China Embassy and the members of SCFA to a banquet at Beijing Hotel. Hu Zhengyue, Vice Chairman of the Soong Ching Ling Foundation of China, Lu Pengqi, Vice Chairman of the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade, Dong Songgen, former Vice President,and Sha Zukang, former Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations were also present.

A public talk themed Prof Jao Tsung-I in Singapore was successfully held at the Chui

Huay Lim Club, on 10th February 2018. Prof Jao Tsung-I is a Chinese calligrapher and painter who is well-known in the academic world both at home and abroad. He is known as the “Light of Chaozhou” and the top master of Chinese culture. He is the most important Professor of Chaozhou and won the first “Global Chinese Scholarship Award for Lifetime Achievement”, bringing him prestige around the world.

The speaker, Prof Yang Bin (University of Macau) carried out in-depth research on Prof Jao Tsung-I, focusing on his days in Singapore, by investigation, corrections and comparing different sources. During the talk, he presented

his research results and drew a clearer picture of Prof Jao’s life and works in Singapore.

9 AM | Visited Beijing People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries

Tian Yan, Vice President of Beijing People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries (BPAFFC) welcomed the visit of

the delegation from SCFA. He said that BPAFFC has been focused on organizing international exchange activities for teenagers and children regularly, and more cultural activities flourished along the “One Belt One Road” route. Prof Phua, SCFA President said that Singapore is a

nation with a diversity of cultures. The exchanges between the two countries will help the people of the two countries to achieve mutual understanding. Both sides had productive discussions for the emerging fields of technology, science, education and art.

10 AM | Visited ShanghaiTech University Associated Dean Frank Tsung welcomed the visit of the delegation and gave a brief introduction about the ShanghaiTech University. Prof Phua, SCFA President showed his concerned about the development of the university. He suggested that the university may analyses cross-border partnerships among higher education, yet to focus on optimizing the enrolment process for international

The delegation then attended a lunch banquet hosted by Zhang Xiaomin, Chairman of Duo Yunxuan.

Digital Transformation Seminar – Digital Transformation be Empowered

The digital transformation seminar, themed Digital Transformation be

Empowered, was successfully held at the School of Law of Singapore Management University on 26th March 2018, from 9 am to 5 pm. The Seminar was jointly organized by Singapore Management University, World Scientific Publishing Co Pte Ltd and the Institute of Advanced Studies of Nanyang Technological University. SCFA was one of the supporting units.

The Seminar fea tured famous entrepreneurs and researchers, including Mr Peng Tieyuan (Secretary General, China Big Data Professional Committee), Mr Ben Tian (Diretor, Alibaba Cloud Research Centre), Mrs Jennifer Qin (Asia Pacific

Investment Management Leader, Deloitte Asia Pacific), Mr Lei Tao (Chief Executive Officer, Beagle Data Technology (Beijing) Co Ltd), Mr Samuel Cammis (Director of Innovation, Deloitte Southeast Asia), Prof Robert Deng (Dean, Postgraduate Research Programmes, Singapore Management University), Dr Geng Xuesong (Lee Kong Chian School of Business, Singapore Management University) and Dr Zhu Feida (Academic Director of Pinnacle Lab for Analytics Singapore Management University).

The Seminar attracted more than 400 participants including businessmen from small and medium-sized enterprises, students, researchers etc.

Talk Series by Prof Huang Chih-Lien

From 21st to 27th January, Prof Huang Chih-Lien, a famous historian was invited to give 4 Seminar talks in Singapore,

had received overwhelming responses. Prof Huang was the founding chairman of The Hong Kong Society of Asia Pacific Twenty One, and the founding director of the Institution for Sustainable Development of Macau University of Science and Technology.

Public Lecture — “The Silk Road” over Sea, Land & Air: Linking Ancient & Modern, China & the World and Towards the FutureOrganized by the Institute of Advanced S t u d i e s , N a n y a n g Te c h n o l o g i c a l University (IAS@NTU), a public lecture themed “The Silk Road” over Sea, Land & Air: Linking Ancient & Modern, China & the World and Towards the Future, was successfully held on 21st January 2018. The lecture was given by Prof Huang, chaired by Prof Phua. It took place at the Chui Huay Lim Club, attracted more than 200 audiences. SCFA supported the lecture.

3). Public Lecture — Singapore & Chinese Community in Singapore and Malaysia Towards 22nd CenturyThe Public Lecture themed Singapore & Chinese Community in Singapore and Malaysia Towards 22nd Century was successfully held on 26th January 2018. The lecture was co-organized by Institute of Advances Studies and Nanyang Centre for Public Administration of Nanyang Technological University, and Chui Huay Lim Club. SCFA was one of the supporting units. The lecture was given by Prof Huang and chaired by Prof Lee Guan Kin (former director, Center for Chinese Language and Culture). The lecture attracted more than 300 audiences.

Seminar — China afterthe 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of ChinaCo-organized by SCFA and Singapore China Business Association, the Seminar – China after the 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China was successfully held on 21st January 2018, at 2.30pm, at the Singapore China Business Association, attracted more than 200 audiences.

The Speakers were Prof Shen Zexiang (President, Singapore-China Association for Advancement of Science and Technology), Prof Chen Kang (Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy, National University of Singapore), Dr Chen Gang and Dr Guo Liangping (both from East Asian Institute, National University of Singapore). Prof Huang was the Guest Speaker while the Chair was Prof Phua Kok Khoo.

SCFA Appointed Prof Huang Wei as Honorary Advisor

On 7th March 2018, SCFA appointed Prof Huang Wei as Honorary Advisor. Prof Huang

is currently the Deputy President & Provost of Northwestern Polytechnical University. He is also an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and foreign member of Russian Academy of Sciences. He is a standing committee member of the China Association of Science and Technology, and member of the Academic Divisions of Chinese Academy of Sciences (CASAD). He also serves in the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars evaluation committee. He was the co-founder of the Institute of Materials Research and Engineering (IMRE), Singapore, and a visiting professor of National University of Singapore. He was also the founding director of the Institute of Advanced Materials at Fudan University, former Vice President of Nanjing University of Posts and Telecommunications, and later appointed as the President of Nanjing Tech University.

Book Sharing Session on Robert Kuok: A MemoirOn 27th January 2018, the Institute of Advanced Studies and Nanyang Centre for Public Administration of Nanyang Technological University jointly organized a Book Sharing Session on Robert Kuok: A Memoir, at the Nanyang Executive Center Auditorium. SCFA was one of the supporting units. Speakers featured included Prof Huang, Mr Su King Siang (Deputy Curator of Johor Bahru Chinese Heritage Museum) and Prof Phua Kok Khoo, while the session was chaired by Prof Chew Soon Beng (Nanyang Centre for Public Administration). The session attracted about 200 audiences.

Towards World-Class Higher Education in China

On 21st January 2018, SCFA invited Prof Huang Wei (Deputy President & Provost of Northwestern Polytechnical University) to give a public talk in Singapore,

themed Towards World-Class Higher Education in China. Prof Huang introduced the achievements of Northwestern Polytechnical University in various fields, especially in aerospace subject, and contributions towards the modernization of China. He also explained the changes in Chinese education policies and welcomed cooperation from different sectors and areas, in shaping world-class higher education in China. The talk took place at Singapore Management University, attracted around 80 audiences.

China Under Xi Jinping’s New Era: Towards Year 2035

Co-organized by Chui Huay L im Club, Institute of Advanced Studies

of Nanyang Technological University, supported by SCFA and Federation of Chinese School Alumni Associations, the public talk – China Under Xi Jinping’s New Era: Towards Year 2035 was successfully held at Chui Huay Lim Club, on 12th May 2018. The talk attracted more than 400 audiences. The talk was given by Prof Zheng Yongnian (Director, East Asian Institute, National University of Singapore) and chaired by Prof Phua Kok Khoo.

Prof Zheng indicated, after the 19th National Congress of the Communist Party

of China, National People’s Congress and Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, China have introduced a long-term plan for its future: 1) the first period (until 2020): building a moderately prosperous society and eliminating poverty; 2) the second period (2020-2035): realizing socialist modernization; 3) the third period (2035-2050): becoming a leading nation of prosperous, democratic, civilized, harmonious and beautiful.

Prof Zheng subsequently analysed the China’s long-term plan from economic, political and diplomatic aspects. From economic aspect, China must avoid the

middle-income trap, and work towards the economic level of developed country. From political aspect, China will follow its own model and system – the China model. From diplomatic aspect, with Wang Qishan taking charge of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, China’s diplomacy will commence transformation, to have greater decision-making power on deciding the big picture, big diplomacy and big direction of China’s diplomacy. He added, if China could reach consensuses in between Japan, India and Indonesia, a new Asian Order, that led by Asian countries, will come in shape.

SCFA, three public talks on New Retails were successfully held at SMU Basement Concourse, from 16th to 17th July 2018. The speaker, Dr Ben Tian is the Director of Alibaba Group and the Senior Director of Alibaba Cloud Research Centre. Two talks – New Retails Technologies and Leading Smart Business – were conducted in Mandarin, while the talk – Leading New Retail Transformation was in English.

On the talks, Dr Tian focused on the latest retail trends and digital strategies

in countries such as China and provided insights into applicable technologies and digital strategies that integrate seamless customer experience from online to offline. He also talked on omni-channel experience, “click-and-motar” concept and digital market ing s t ra teg ies o n h o w t o i n c re a s e customer engagement. delegation. Since its establishment in 1986, SICA

has actively and extensively promoted international exchange activities in various fields such as culture and arts, science and technology, economy and finance, humanities and society, and education and sports. During this visit, both sides

discussed the possibility of cooperation and communication in terms of culture and art such as fine arts, drama, and music. Deputy Director Sun said that Singapore and Shanghai have many similarities, regarding the interaction of the Eastern and Western cultures worth learning from, and invited SCFA to visit Shanghai.

On 9th January 2018, a delegation led by Mr Hu Zheng, Board member

of China Merchants group, visited SCFA. SCFA President Prof Phua Kok Khoo, Vice President Mr Ung Gim Sei received the delegation. The delegation members, including Mr Yang Hong, General Manager of China Merchants Capital Investment Co Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as “China Merchants Capital”), Mr Zhang Bin, Officer

AS one of the biggest financial and construction groups, China Merchants Capital domestic operations headquartered in Shenzhen, the international operations headquarters in Hong Kong. The group has

12 secondary companies in total, with 5 in Hong Kong and 7 in mainland China, total of 51100 employees. The Group now is taking part in the Belt and Road Initiative, and China-Belarus Industrial Park which was invested by this group, is one of their successful projects.

During the meeting, both sides exchanged views and ideas with the aim to further strengthen cooperation in education, city government and technological research cooperation between SCFA and Nanjing.

Singapore China Business Association could organise a group visit to Shanghai, in terms of exploring cooperation possibilities and create new cooperation models.

at the Kallang Theatre. The Gala attracted around 1700 persons. The Gala showcased various genres of performance such as dance, vocal, instrumental music, reciting, fashion show etc. The 2-hour-Gala featured 23 performances presented by 18 groups, and more than 200 actors and staffs were involved in the Gala.

14th January 2018, at the National Library. The book Lu Xun in Southeast Asia, is the first collection of Lu Xun Studies in Southeast Asia. Seminar was given by Prof Wong Yoon Wah, Vice President of

Chinese Book Launch – Lu Xun in Southeast AsiaMalaysia‘s Southern University College, Prof Phua Kok Khoo, Prof Liu Hong, Chair of School of Social Sciences of Nanyang Technological University, and Mr Toh Lam Huat. The launch attracted around 130 audiences, including Prof Wang Gungwu and Prof Eddie Kuo Chen Yu.
