The school celebrated Chinese New Year with the Mother Tongue LanguagesDepartment from both divisions conducting various activities to ring in theYear of the Dog. In the Primary Division, Primary 3 students had fun in amass Chinese Calligraphy Writing activity. The Primary 4 to Primary 6students competed in a classroom decoration competition. The LibraryCommittee and the Parent Support Group jointly set up a Chinese New YearCultural booth during extended recess to promote cultural understandingand appreciation. There were exciting activities like windmill making,simplified version of bean art, paper-cutting and dough modelling.

The highlight of the celebration was an exciting lion dance and dragondance performance which was held in the school courtyard. This wasfollowed by a concert for the Primary Division which featured performancessuch as Face Mask Changing, Chinese Drama, Chinese Opera, Diabolo anda dance item by the SC Dance Group. It was indeed a memorable occasion.

Total Defence Day

SCGS commemorated Total Defence Day on 14 February 2018 with the theme “Together We Keep Singapore Strong”.The Primary students completed classroom activities during the week of commemoration. During the extended recess,they took part in an obstacle race to experience the simulation of the National Service training. At Assembly, the NEchamps gave a presentation and the students enjoyed a play on how to preserve our identity and defend our nation.At the Secondary assembly, Ms Wong Swee Yean from the National Arts Council, took the lower secondary studentson a story-telling session. Dr Graham Ong-Webb, from S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies, spoke to theupper secondary students about issues on Singapore’s security challenges, its vulnerabilities and opportunities in themidst of rising global economic and political uncertainties. The inspiring talks, shows and intriguing activities enabledthe students to gain a better understanding of Total Defence and their roles in keeping Singapore strong.

Visit to the Care CornerFamily Service CentreToa Payoh ( Primary 3 )

Primary Three students visited the Care Corner Family Service Centre at ToaPayoh during the Chinese New Year period in February. The main objectiveof the visit was to involve pupils in community work. The students performedfor the elderly and presented mandarin oranges to them. The visit certainlygave the students an opportunity to put into action the values of care, respectand patience and it was heartening to see the smile on each and every elderly’sface.

Learning Journey to theZoo ( Primary 3 )

The Primary 3 students went on a learning journey to theRiver Safari on 21 March 2018. The main objectives ofthe learning journey are to enable the students to seeauthentic examples of animal groups and learn thedifferent characteristics and habitats of animals. They alsolearnt about the diversity and classification of animals.Students also learnt to communicate and solve authenticproblems using Mathematical language and concepts.They had a rewarding day at the zoo.

Students’ Reflections:

The trip was very interesting. We saw many animals likethe kangaroos, zebras, polar bears and penguins. We alsowatched a show and learnt that seals are very clever. Ihope we can visit the zoo again.- Lauren Low, Pri 3SY

I was so amazed by all the different animals there.Although, I have been to the zoo before, I have only seena few of the many animals there. I certainly liked the sealion performance as I never knew that sea lions were soclever.- Kirsten Yap, Pri 3C

I learnt a lot of facts about different animals. I also learnthow animals are getting endangered as poachers arehunting and killing them and that we are destroying theirnatural habitats.- Ashleigh Wong, Pri 3G

I enjoyed the trip as I loved looking at the animals. I hadto find out if each animal was a carnivore or an omnivore.I also learnt about the hooved animals. I learntmultiplication too as I had to draw a model to find outhow much the adult tickets cost.- Sera Nyan, Pri 3P

Primary 4 and 5 students participated in the Traffic Games in April. Thisevent was organised by the School Safety Unit, Schools Division (Ministryof Education). The main objective of the Traffic Games is to educate thestudents on road safety. It provided the students with an opportunity totake the role and understand the responsibilities of different road userssuch as pedestrians, motorists, cyclists and traffic marshals. Every studentnot only learnt important road safety skills but enjoyed themselvesthoroughly in the fun and authentic hands-on experiences.

Students’ Reflections:

Students’ Reflections:

P5 Camp

189 students attended the annual Primary 5 Camp at MOE Changi Coast OutdoorAdventure Centre from 1 to 3 March 2018. The theme of the camp this yearis Dare, aligned to the objectives of self-discovery and resilience of the individualand building stronger bonds with their peers. At the camp, students attemptedvarious challenging activities like the Challenge Rope Course, Rock Climbing,Abseiling, Caving and Field Cooking. Most of them were initially apprehensive,but with the encouragement of their peers, they eventually overcame theirfears and accomplished the tasks. Over the three days, the students also learntthe importance of cooperation and communication within their group and withthe other campers. The camp has indeed provided opportunities for the studentsto be more aware of her own strengths, resilience to challenge herself, and toexperience communal living.
