2 Motivation for Green ICT


ICT: Growing Environmental Footprint

again in the next 5 – US EPA

Just a single Google data centre situated in Oregon, US, consumes energy equivalent to that of the entire city of Geneva, in Switzerland

The ICT sector currently contributes 2-3% to global emissions but this is set to

double in the next two years- ITU Director Johnson

Power makes up >50% of the cost of running a DC


Although ICTs account for only around 2.5 per cent of total greenhouse gas emissions, they have the potential to be used in reducing the other 97.5 per cent of emissions in other sectors.

Specific ICT opportunities identified in this report can lead to emission reductions five times the size of the sector’s own footprint, up to 7.8 GtCO2e, or 15% of total BAU emissions by 2020.

Standards Development: Conduct DC energy benchmarking study and work with industry to develop Green DC standards
