    The Mystery of PainDouglas Nelson2013 224pp 9781848191525 pb $25.00

Covering the traditional scientific models of understanding as well as the current research, the book explores the different types of pain, providing clear explanations of the structures and processes involved. It examines key issues such as the placebo effect, fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS), and how social support and understanding can be powerful tools in reducing pains devastating effects. The book also looks at diagnosis and measurement of pain, and how different models of thinking affect the relationship between patient and clinician.

Approaching pain in a practical and scientific way, the book helps readers understand the processes of pain. It will be essential reading for anyone who wants to know more about pain and pain management, alternative medicine practitioners, massage therapists and psychotherapists.

The more deeply you understand the process of pain, the more power you have to influence it. Emerging advances in the science of pain are not only fascinating; they open doors to possible avenues of treatment. This book presents a comprehensive, accessible guide to the scientific understanding of pain.

Its a joy to help alleviate pain. Its equally frustrating to see a patient return with chronic pain that was at best temporarily eased. The Mystery of Pain puts those cases in context, providing an excellent framework for both patients and health care providers to understand why what works for one may not work for another. Douglas use of current research and familiar examples clearly explain the revolutionary changes influencing our approach to a growing problem. I highly recommend it for anyone suffering from or treating pain.

    - Celia Bucci MA, LMT, author of Condition-Specific Massage Therapy

Douglas Nelsons book The Mystery of Pain is a compassionate work from the heart, very important for anyone who wishes to understand healing and to be healed. In this book, we are assisted with deep empathy to open doors to explore this mystery of pain in multiple dimensions. Its a lifelong journey to acknowledge this awareness, one of the universal noble truths we must learn to embrace. Thank you, Douglas, for your compassionate and learned guidance.

Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches - TianGan DiZhiThe Keys to the SublimeMaster Zhongxian Wu and Dr. Karin Taylor Wu2013 37 cards 9781848191501 $25.00

The Stems and Branches are fundamental to understanding much of the Chinese medicines and arts, yet many people know little about them.

TianGan (Heavenly Stems) and DiZhi (Earthly Branches), commonly abbreviated to GanZhi, originated in the ancient Chinese cosmological sciences and is a complex calendrical system which was created to codify the patterns of life and of the universe itself. The ten symbols of Gan express the Yin or Yang perspective of Five Elements and embody the Way of Heaven. The 12 symbols of Zhi, made manifest in the 12 animals of the Chinese zodiac, hold the root of each Element and embrace the Way of Earth.

This set of study cards decodes some of the fundamental messages from the 22 GanZhi symbols. The Chinese character and key characteristics of each Stem or Branch are shown, providing invaluable insights into their symbolic and numerological meanings. For calligraphers and those who want to draw the characters correctly, the stroke order is clearly illustrated on separate cards.

Gold Mirrors and Tongue ReflectionsThe Cornerstone Classics of Chinese Medicine Tongue Diagnosis - The Ao Shi Shang Han Jin Jing lu, and the Shang Han She JianIoannis SolosForewords by Professor Liang Rong and Professor Chen Jia-xu

    2012 304pp 9781848190955 hb $65.00

Two of the major texts in the history of tongue diagnosis are presented and put into context in this volume, reaffirming the strength of tongue diagnosis as a core diagnostic method. These key texts are made available to western readers for the first time, with typical, traditional Chinese editions reproduced alongside the translation. The author provides an excellent overview of the tongue diagnosis theories in the major classics prior to the Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368), and discusses significant developments and publications. The Gold Mirror Records, first published in 1341, was a popular manual for centuries, appearing in many editions and variations. Tongue Reflections in Cold Damage, first published in 1668, developed the field of diagnosis as a whole by adopting the analysis of tongue color as its main principle. Both texts are introduced with meticulous English translations and notes.

This seminal text will give practitioners and students of Chinese medicine a sound understanding of the theory and practice of tongue diagnosis from the early texts, and will be of interest to academic readers of classic Chinese texts.

While in school, I assumed tongue diagnosis was as old as pulse taking. Later, I learned it was developed by the warm-disease school of the Ming and Qing dynasties. Wrong again! This book traces the true story of tongue diagnosis. The translations and illustrations provide a clarity that seems to be lacking in modern times.

    - Lorraine Wilcox PhD, LAc, teaches, researches, translates, and writes books on Chinese medicine, Los Angeles

Ioannis Solos lucid and cutting-edge scholarship gives us direct access to the key classical literature on tongue diagnosis. Now, for the first time practitioners and scholars in the West can learn from the same sources as colleagues in China and East Asia.

The Great IntentAcupuncture Odes, Songs and RhymesRichard BertschingerJune 2013 224pp 9781848191327 pb $39.95

Songs and rhymes have been used by physicians for centuries in China as a means of memorizing and passing on methods of practice and behavior, moral attitudes, effective points, diagnostic tips and rules of thumb. These poems offer a rich insight into the life and thought of these skilled doctors, as well as practical indications for treatment. Contemporary acupuncturists can see from these poems the depths of the tradition, better understand a breadth of diagnostic skills and treatment planning, and as a result greatly improve their appreciation of intent within their own practice.

This is the first translation of these acupuncture odes, songs and rhymes from the Great Compendium of Acupuncture and Moxibustion compiled by the Chinese physician Yang Jizhou during late Ming China. The book includes detailed introductions that place the work in historical, cultural, and medical context, a symptom index, a point index glossary and a list of helpful points for common signs and symptoms encountered in acupuncture and physiotherapy clinics. It also serves as a gentle introduction to the philosophy behind acupuncture practice.

The Secret of Everlasting LifeThe First Translation of the Ancient Chinese Text on ImmortalityRichard Bertschinger2010 304pp 9781848190481 pb $24.95

The Secret of Everlasting Life is the first translation from the Chinese of the second-century Can Tong Qi. This ancient work, the earliest known text on transformation and immortality, echoes the wisdom and poetry of both the Tao Te Ching and I Ching. The Can Tong Qi is also the ancestral text of all Qi Gong exercises in China. This translation reveals for the first time the meditation methods practiced for thousands of years by Taoist sages.

Presented here with its original Chinese commentaries, the Can Tong Qi is full of practical information and advice about the process of human transformation and how to nurture and develop the natural life-energy within us. Richard Bertschingers additional commentary explains the intricacies of Chinese allegory and symbolism for the Western reader.

This book is an insightful read for anyone interested in Taoist thought, Chinese philosophy and culture, or Chinese medicine.

The art of connecting with, feeling and adjusting the energy body using the consciousness is a key aspect of Nei Gong and Qi Gong. Damo Mitchell provides step-by-step instructions on how to experience the various elements which make up the energy body, explaining how to identify and feel these, and how to diagnose imbalances and restore harmony. He describes the nature of the five elements, the meridians and the meridian points, inviting the reader to experience them through guided internal exercises using the body, breath and mind. Instructional drawings and photographs are included throughout the book.

Connecting the fundamentals of Chinese medicine with the lesser-known spiritual and esoteric aspects of practice, this book will be of great interest to intermediate and advanced practitioners of Qi Gong, Nei Gong, Taijiquan and Chinese medicine.

Fire Dragon Meridian QigongEssential Neigong for Health and Spiritual TransformationMaster Zhongxian Wu and Dr Karin Taylor Wu2012 200pp 9781848191037 pb 15.99

Fire Dragon Meridian Qigong is a traditional Chinese internal alchemy method that embodies the spirit of the rising dragon, an auspicious symbol of transformation in Chinese culture. The form works directly on the acupuncture meridians, releasing areas of stagnation and bringing the physical and emotional body into a balanced state of well-being.

This Qigong form implements special visualization and breathing techniques in addition to movements that imitate sparks arising from a bonfire and swirling upward like a spiraling dragon. Stoking our inner fire melts away the ice, or the areas of blockage and disease, opens our energetic pathways and allows the smooth flow of Qi in our meridians. The Fire Dragon practice follows the traditional internal alchemy process, where Jing (essence) transforms to Qi (vital energy), Qi transforms to Shen (spirit), and Shen returns to Emptiness. Fire Dragon Meridian Qigong is a key Qigong form for those seeking healing from cancer and other significant health challenges, and is the practice the authors turned to in order to transform the grief over their sons death.

The book provides background information and a detailed description of the form itself, illustrated with calligraphy, meridian drawings, and photographs throughout.

Tranquil Sitting is the Taoist Master Yin Shi Zis practical guide and inspirational testament to the healing power and spiritual benefits of meditation and Chinese medical Qigong.

The book explores the theory and physiological aspects of meditation and offers practical instruction in traditional meditation techniques. It also documents Yin Shi Zis personal experiences with meditation, his own self-healing which he attributes to his Taoist practice, and his initiation into the Tibetan tantric practice of opening the crown of the head.

Faithfully translated from the Chinese, this is an influential text that belongs on the bookshelves of everyone with an interest in Taoist practice and meditation.

Master Yin Shi Zis book so enthralled me that I read it in a single sitting. His training in classical Chinese medicine and as a professor of physiology enables him to express both his own experiences and his guide to cultivating a practice of these methods in a language easily comprehensible to the modern reader. His book is a wonderful contribution to our understanding of the nature of Taoist/Buddhist yoga, meditation, and inner science.

Written during the Tang dynasty, this unusual tantric guide documents a sexual tantra that is thought to have been practiced by kings for several dynasties, before losing favor to a more ascetic approach to Taoism. According to legend, the author was last seen on the edge of a precipice, clasping the book to his chest, and proclaiming the sincerity of his practice.

Translated into English for the first time, this illuminating text carefully describes the methods of this sexual internal alchemy practice, pursued strictly for the spiritual advancement of the practitioner, and undertaken only once desire and attachment for a consort had been overcome. Cloaked in metaphor, the techniques and attendant virtues of the practice are presented in beautiful poetry and prose, with explanatory commentaries throughout.

This is an important historical text that will provide a fascinating insight into ancient tantric practices for anyone with an interest in Taoism, Chinese history and philosophy, and tantra or meditation practices.

Yin Shi Zi was a Chinese Master who trained in classical Chinese medicine. He wrote Tranquil Sitting in 1954 at the age of 81.

Shifu Hwang is a practicing Taoist of the Chuen Zen School. He established Immortal Cancer Care Foundation.

Cheney Crow has a PhD in Applied Linguistics and taught at the University of Texas for 20 years.

Master Chang Sen Feng was an active Taoist master during the Tang Dynasty. He was schooled in the Chai Tzan tradition, which he practiced, and taught. His practice led him to explore the use of sexual energy as a source for internal alchemy.
