4PRESENTATIONThe current exceptional macroeconomic circumstances in Peru provide a window ofopportunities for our country and for the world. This Administration was perfectly aware ofthis fact when it took office on July 28th. 2006, and we therefore undertook the commitmentof hosting two Summits in Lima: the Fifth Summit of Heads of State and Government of LatinAmerica, the Caribbean and the European Union (LAC-EU) and the Sixteenth Summit ofLeaders of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Forum (APEC 2008).
The goals of these summits transcend economic and commercial bounds because theirresults will entail social, economic and environmental impacts on human development, they will boost the pursuit of equality, advance poverty eradication efforts and further thestruggle against exploitation and destitution.
Since poverty reduction is one of the main concerns of the Peruvian Government weintend to improve the efficacy and efficiency of poverty relief programmes by upgradingmanagerial practices in public expenditure. The Basis for the Poverty Relief Strategy andEconomic Opportunities for the Poor defines the way in which economic growth togetherwith equitable wealth distribution, sound decentralization policies, efficient social expenditureand timely and adequate provision of services for the impoverished population will allow forthe creation of economic opportunities for deprived people.
In this context we present to the Heads of State and to the delegations participating in bothSummits, this Statistical Overview Per: Sntesis Estadstica with information on itssocial and economic evolution.
