Digitalization | SINUMERIK InSight 2017

The Digital Enterprise Suite offers companies a comprehen-sive portfolio of software-based systems and automation technologies for a successful digitalization strategy. Of these systems and technologies, Siemens will be showcasing at EMO 2017 seamless solutions that extend from machine tools to a company’s ERP level. The presentation focuses on digital highlights such as Manage MyMachines, the introduction to digitalization, Sinumerik Edge, and the end-to-end digitalization of production and optimal utilization of production resources. Another key topic illustrates the Sinumerik highlights: new operating concepts, new machining functions, and new multi-technologies such as additive manufacturing.

Machine operators and machine manufacturers have dif-ferent requirements and expectations of digitalization: whereas operators want to increase their productivity, machine manufacturers are interested in optimizing their processes and developing new business models. From the

Digitalization in the machine tool world

Genuine digitalization

Siemens portfolio, machine operators prefer to use prod-ucts with the CAD/CAM-CNC process chain and Manage MyPrograms, the NC program management solution. Machine operators can also benefit from the connection of Manage MyResources – the tool management system – to Teamcenter. These solutions allow them to increase the availability of their equipment and boost its productivity and profitability.

At its booth at EMO 2017, Siemens has grouped the topics for these two target groups by showcasing the develop-ment process of a drone. To account for the fact that digi-talization has already arrived in the real world of machine tools, the topics “digital” and “real” were deliberately linked. Siemens offers its customers the right solution in the right place at every stage of the process – whether it is digital or real.

siemens.com/machinetools-digitalization

With integrated software and hardware solutions and services tailored to industry-specific processes and requirements, Siemens helps machine builders increase productivity. The broad range of solutions offered addresses the entire value chain, enabling manufacturers to boost their competitiveness. They create a seamless link between the virtual and the real world of product development and production.

Manage MyMachines

The gateway to the digital enterprise

CNC Shopfloor Management software is an umbrella term for the Siemens digitalization portfolio of solutions for making the development and use of machine tools even more efficient. With three levels – In Cloud, In Line, and In Machine – we have created an all-inclusive, future-proof IT architec-ture to achieve this goal. The levels correspond to the three platforms MindSphere, Sinumerik Integrate, and Sinumerik/Sinumerik Edge, which take tailor-made functions from the field to the cloud. Scalable, direct, and indirect connectivity ensure optimal access to the controls.

Digitalization | SINUMERIK InSight 2017

Sinumerik Edge is a new, robust, and high-performance hardware and soft-ware solution for machine-based applications (edge computing). It allows operators to process and analyze high-frequency process data in real time in the field. Siemens

Sinumerik Edge

Process analysis and optimization with real-time data

The Sinumerik Integrate platform makes a wide range of “in-line” applications available. The app is located on a local Sinumerik Integrate server and does not require cloud connectivity. This allows users to run the new Analyze MyCondition app locally to perform synchronous, circular, and universal axis tests “in line” for condition monitoring. Machine tools that are connected to the local Sinumerik Integrate server can now be consistently monitored locally on the machine with various testing and trigger options.

Another upcoming highlight is Manage MyResources, the new machine tool management solution, which can be integrated into the central data management system

All those involved in shopfloor processes – from production management, work preparation, work planning, and tool adjustment to fitting and machine setting – can get an over-view of the tool management and preparation.

Using the Analyze MyWorkpiece /Toolpath desktop application, it is also possible to simultaneously visu-alize and compare the finished geom-etry from the CAD system, the NC program, and the record of the tool-path after machining has been com-pleted in 3D. Using the 3D visualization tool Analyze MyWorkpiece /Toolpath, it is possible to simultaneously visualize and compare the finished geometry from the CAD system, the NC program, and the record of the toolpath in 3D after machining is completed. Filters and color coding are used to highlight potentially problematic areas. The machine axes’ values are shown in Sinumerik Operate format, which allows the operator to immediately identify whether an error is due to the NC program or was caused by the machine kinematics or the clamping. Using Analyze MyWorkpiece /Toolpath, operators can also take corrective action or perform optimizations even before a workpiece is produced.

measure points that are just microns apart, it is easy to judge whether defects are relevant for the surface finish, saving valuable machine time for the produc-tion of faulty parts – because reworking is kept to a bare minimum. The tool also indicates whether the tool speed on the workpiece is lower than per-mitted by the material and the cutting edge of the tool. This enables users to get the most out of the NC program-ming and choose appropriate cycles.

Digitalization Check as a Service supports cus-tomers in digitalizing their production with expert consulting and precise recommendations for net-working machines in the manufacturing IT infrastructure.

The service is provided on site by the local Siemens organization. Data from the machine equipment are collected by a trained Siemens technician in a stan-dardized manner without creating downtime. Then, an expert located at headquarters evaluates the compatibility with Siemens NC software solutions (such as Sinumerik Integrate), resulting in custom-ized recommendations for an appropriate course of action suited to the specific situation. The detailed machinery analysis performed in the digitalization check reduces project obstacles and clearly identi-fies the suitability of each machine tool for digitali-zation, thus helping decision-makers develop a strategy for the digital future.

The Siemens Product Partner Identify3D, a software provider for digital manu-facturing security and traceability, will integrate its technology into Sinumerik CNCs and PLM software from Siemens. A secure digital manu-facturing workflow – one that ensures IT security throughout the entire chain, from engineering to part production – begins with an encryption that is

Secure digital manufacturing workflowsintegrated into NX CAM: for example, the encryption of a part program in a data package. This package can then be uploaded to a digital asset manage-ment system such as Team Center and passed on to an MES; for example, ShopFloorConnect. The data package is decrypted during manufacturing by the Sinumerik 840D sl. Identify3D’s solution allows parameters for manu-

facturing to be integrated into the data package. These parameters include authorizing only manufac-turing devices and individuals with the proper identification and settings, a timestamp that shows the validity of the data package, and limitations on the quantity manufactured.

Sinumerik 840D sl Virtual Commis-sioning Services reduce real commis-sioning while decreasing the associated risks. The services offer project- specific consulting and implementation and help you build your own team of experts. By using hardware-in-the-loop simulation on the Sinumerik 840D sl – in other words, combining the virtual machine model with the real controller – the Siemens specialists help their cus-tomers manage the actual commis-sioning process, even in challenging projects, with the assistance of virtual commissioning.

The Sinumerik Virtual Commissioning Consulting Service reliably evaluates a specific project for its feasibility and effort required and therefore allows operators to make needs-based deci-sions. Working with the Siemens spe-

cialists, typical and specific commis-sioning scenarios are registered and checked for feasibility. At the same time, the associated cost and effort required for modeling and testing are also estimated. On this basis, the Siemens specialists draft a spatial and mathematical behavior model of the machine as part of Sinumerik Virtual Commissioning Implementation using state-of-the-art software tools. As part of the services, the software required is licensed for the duration of the project.

The commissioning scenarios defined in the consulting process are virtually tested in close collaboration with the customer to identify potential errors and allow them to be fixed at an early stage. This significantly reduces the risk of costly damage and delays in delivery.

The Sinumerik Virtual Commissioning Training also provides assistance in building up know-how carriers by pro-viding customized courses for training and qualification. The training by experienced service staff ensures that the material is practically relevant.

With Safety Integrated plus, there is now a new version of Safety Integrated (SI) available that can be operated with all currently deliverable CNC Sinumerik 840D sl NCUs. This makes configuration and commissioning extremely fast and easy. In the past, separate programs had to be written for the NCK and the PLC. Now all you need is one fail-safe program for the F-PLC.

This alone cuts time expenditures in half. Another advantage: the fail-safe program for the PLC is created with Step 7, the user-friendly PLC soft-ware that is integrated in TIA Portal as standard. There are numerous certified fail-safe modules available in TIA Portal that users can directly integrate into their own safety program.

Not only does this make configuration with SI plus easier, it also simplifies the commissioning process because the SI plus graphic masks in Sinumerik Operate make it easy to parameterize the safety functions. This shortens commissioning time by about 20%.

For many years now, the Siemens Mechatronic Support has been providing services and solving problems in the area of mechanical engineering, helping machine builders improve the quality of their machines. Even before the first real machine is built with iron and steel, the mechanics, electronics, and control technology are modeled in a virtual prototype, tested for characteristic parameters and their interaction, and optimized. This means that the real pro-totype barely needs to be readjusted. As a result, development risks for new machines are reduced, as is the actual development time for new machine ideas: the market-ready machine is finished faster and with less effort. Further-more, Mechatronic Support does not end with commissioning: during opera-tion, it is possible to verify whether the forecasts for machine behavior were accurate. And very often, the forecasts made by Mechatronic Support have proven their worth.

Mechatronic Support is also driving innovation for machine builders. A number of control and drive functions custom-tailored for specific problems were devel-oped as prototypes and eventually integrated into Sinumerik, either as part of the basic setup or as an option. As a result, mechanical engineers have an ever-growing arsenal of helpful control functions available to absorb vibration and increase machining performance.

Machine operators, however, often only notice these functions – which typi-cally work in the background – if they are not activated.

With Sinumerik Integrate Create MyHMI /WinCC, Siemens offers a software tool to easily customize the user interface using drag and drop – no special skills needed. This allows machine manufacturers to present a large amount of information to their customers at the same time in a clearly structured way. For example, customers can both see supplementary information about the machines and use an on-screen keypad. Furthermore, they can repro-duce the next program sequence with Sinumerik Operate and/or play a real-time video from a camera installed in the machine room that shows areas that would otherwise be blocked from view.

In addition to a variety of content, this solution offers many other visual design options. Machine manufacturers can customize the HMI surface to reflect their own corporate design.

High resolution, rugged, completely touch-sensitive: that is the new 16:9 Sinumerik blackline plus operating unit. The slim panels are available in four sizes: 15, 19, 22, and 24 inches. The wide-screen format, high resolution, and large screen diagonals make new operating concepts with virtual buttons, widgets, and applications available.

The industrial displays are behind a large glass surface and can be easily operated, just like using a tablet or smart-phone at home. The panels can also be used while wearing gloves. They are equipped with IP65 protection class, meaning that they are highly resistant to external factors.

The hardware of the new operating units suited for indus-trial use is available in a variety of versions: for example, as a thin client, monitor, or panel PC. The TOP product line is especially flexible in terms of hardware attachment options because there can be distances of up to

100 meters between the controller, industrial PC, and oper-ating unit. The respective panels are simply linked using Industrial Ethernet. With the Sinumerik TOP solution, one CNC can run up to four operator panels, making this tech-nology especially interesting for large machines.

The Sinumerik blackline plus panels are complemented by attachable machine control panels (MCPs). The version MCP 398C is the same for all available screen formats. However, depending on their size they can be expanded with additional modules in a custom design according to the OEM’s or end user’s requirements. For example, if you select a 22-inch screen, you can add the expansion module EM 131 to a 131 mm-wide standard MCP and equip it with six function keys and an override control or handwheel.

With large feed axes and very high torque requirements in mind, Siemens has added the Simotics S-1FTZ servomotor in frame size 132 to its portfolio. This new addition is available either as a self-cooled unit or with forced ventilation. In addition to being more compact, the advantages of the new Simotics S-1FT7 compared to the previous models include a higher maximum torque and considerably higher S1 torques. This allows for faster acceleration as well as more dynamic motions and increases the overall output of the motor. Because it requires less power, the new Simotics S-1FT7 is also more efficient, which means that users can choose a smaller motor module. A forced ventilation reduces the heat input into the machine. Together with the reduced torque ripple, this improves the surface quality of the workpiece. The motor is also easy to replace: the 24 bit DQI single and multiturn absolute encoders are exchangeable, so handling is especially easy. These Simotics S-1FT7 servomotors are mainly used for heavy-load lathes and milling machines in Gantry portal design with high cutting forces, where water cooling is not used.

diameter and higher spindle rigidity and allows for a larger bar clearance. Benefits are a broader manufacturing range and an increase in productivity. The Simotics M-1FE2 motors are mainly used in large-scale machines for lathe spindles and also in large rotary table applications.

siemens.com/simotics

The Simotics M-1FE2 built-in motor is now available in the new frame size 180. With its high torques, the built-in spindle motor accelerates to up to 4,200 revolutions per minute (rpm), increasing the machine’s cutting effi-ciency to incredibly high levels. Its high performance makes the motor perfect for turning and milling centers and for highly demanding tasks. The Simotics M-1FE2 has permanent magnets that deliver exceptionally high torque density, meaning that it is possible to build very compact machines. The large interior diameter of 200 mm provides for a large shaft

There are four new booksize motor modules for Sinamics drives: sizes 24, 45, and 60 A are motor modules with double overload, and the 24 A even supports triple overload. The new motor modules are much more compact than the current versions and therefore take up less space in the control cabi- net. The 45 A and 60 A modules are 33% smaller.

They are also equipped with functions that make them very rugged and user-friendly: because the semiconductors are thermally insulated from the rest of the electronics, the devices have a longer service life. An innovative shielding concept also makes them more resilient in terms of electro-magnetic compatibility, and a massive mounting

plate and extremely rugged fixing lugs ensure easy installation and stability.

Motion Connect has installed power cables that ensure fast, easy, and reliable wiring. These are available with prepared cable ends, and they come in two connector variants (push-in or screw-in). The arrangement of the motor connec-tion plugs was also improved so that they are easy to reach and allow for fast connection. The fans can be accessed from the front to avoid having to remove the motor module when replacing them.

SINUMERIK InSight 2017 | Technology

Nodding compensation

Shorter machining time and higher quality

Accelerating a workpiece quickly results in tilting. This dynamic position deviation can be compensated by actively accelerating along different axes of the machine to prevent imper-fections on the workpiece surface. The jerk values of the machine axes can be increased with nodding com-pensation to reduce machining time and significantly increase workpiece quality. The new software Version 4.8 of Sinumerik 840D sl now supports two types of nodding compensation:

Nodding Compensation Eco is used where the nodding movement of the axis caused by acceleration or deceler-ation can be compensated by the movement of another axis. Nodding Compensation Advanced is used when the machine nods because of several different influence variables that need to be compensated by moving several machine axes.

siemens.com/sinumerik

NEW FEATURES

• Increased machining quality with nodding compensation

• Simple nodding compensation with one compensation axis when accelerating

• Complex nodding compensation for different influence variables with several compensation axes

NEW FEATURES

• Collision avoidance in setup and automatic mode

• Collision Avoidance Eco to monitor collisions of moving and static machine components

• Collision Avoidance Advanced with additional collision monitoring functions for tools and the workpiece

without nodding compensation with nodding compensation☑

15

Technology | SINUMERIK InSight 2017

Beginning with Sinumerik 840D sl Version 4.8, two types of advanced collision avoidance are available. Collision Avoidance Eco prevents the collision of the moving machine components, such as the spindle, with static com-ponents, such as the machine cladding. The components that need protection are designed in simple, geometric shapes. Collision monitoring is available in both the machine’s setup and automatic mode of operation. Poten-tially colliding parts are shown right on the CNC user inter-face. Collision Avoidance Advanced also monitors tools and

the removal of material from the workpiece. It does this by running the software from Sinumerik product partner, ModuleWorks, on a separate PC where it provides real-time position and setup data such as tool geometries. Collision Avoidance Advanced dynamically protects the machine, tool, and workpiece during material removal while pro-viding a constant overview of all components.

Additional protection for machines

Run MyRobot /Direct Control

Direct connection of highly precise robotsRun MyRobot /Direct Control in Sinumerik 840D sl Version 4.8 elimi-nates the need for an additional robot control system. This is especially advantageous for robots in the vicinity of machine tools. Using the entire range of CNC and drive functions, robots are able to achieve unprece-dented levels of dynamics and preci-sion. Now, in addition to purely pick-and-place tasks, robots can also perform tasks such as the deburring of workpieces while simultaneously running the machining process on the machine tool. Integrating the robot into the machine tool’s CNC system also brings advantages for commis-

sioning, service, and maintenance. Requiring one configuration environ-ment and a smaller range of spare parts, while providing comprehensive Sinumerik diagnostics functions, makes every single process step a lot easier.

Another advantage: the robot can be integrated into the CAD/CAM-CNC pro- cess chain as an additional machining unit. By simulating the virtual machine based on Sinumerik VNCK, the robot can be fully integrated into the machining process as a digital twin.

siemens.com/sinumerik-robotics

NEW FEATURES

• The robot is controlled by the Sinumerik CNC and drive system (direct control concept)

• CNC programming and technology functions can also be used for robots

• Sinumerik’s configuration and diagnostic functions can be used by robots as well

• Robots are integrated into the CAD/CAM-CNC process chain
