Festival of Lights assembly

Students and parents enjoyed an assembly filled with students singing and dancing to celebrate and

learn about the different cultural holidays that our diverse community celebrates. The theme of the

Festival of Lights was to focus on the fact that most of the holidays we celebrate, include “light” as a

central theme. Student performances recognized the theme of light through the celebrations of

Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Chinese New Year, Diwali, Eid, Vaisakhi, Navratra and Janmashtmi.

Thanks to Mrs.Virk and Mrs. Dias for working with the SIB staff and students to put together this

amazing assembly.

Right to Play

On November 21, 2014 the Junior Leaders travelled to Stephen

Lewis Secondary School for the Right to Play Junior Leaders

Initiative training program. The 10 Grade 5 and 6 students

gained leadership skills, built character and learned a number of

different games that are based on social justice issues that

children are faced with from around the world.

Rinsy, Kiya, Simren, Jenish, Thiyva, Rahave, Poomicaa,

Shania, Parteek and Sarujan will be spending the next few

months putting together an action plan to bring the Right to

Play Initiative to the students of Sir Isaac Brock. In the spring

the Junior Leaders will be hosting a Today we Play activity day

at which time they will be running the activities and games for

their peers. Stay tuned for more information from the Right to

Play Junior Leaders.

Senior Volleyball

This past November and December the Grade 7 & 8 Senior Boys and Girls Volleyball teams participated in a tournament at

Southfields Village P.S. in Caledon. After many practices both at nutrition breaks and after school, the students went to the

tournament and made Sir Isaac Brock very proud!!

The girls team made up of Sachi, Vaisnavi, Priya, Jasmine, Stuti, Simreet, Vyoma, Aqsa and Preethi showed great improvement,

determination, spirit and sportsmanship as they played in the round robin tournament throughout the day. We are very proud of

their dedication and school spirit!!! Great work Ladies!!

The boys team travelled to Southfields Village later on in the week and played with great skill, team spirit, perseverance and

drive! The team played against 4 other Peel schools during the round robin winning all of their sets but one, sending them to the

Championship round! After playing both Walnut Grove and Palgrave in two very close games, the boys won both of their sets

against the schools, winning the Championship!! Congratulations to Dhariya, Triman, Jaskaran, Maulik, Yash, Manraj, Rwaha,

Pavanjot and Ahmet!! We are very proud of all of you!! Go SIB!!!

Junior Volleyball

The Junior Girls Volleyball team worked hard all season. They are commended on their perseverance, dedication and

commitment to practicing their skills. The girls participated in a tournament and placed 5th. Way to go girls!

The Junior Boys Volleyball team demonstrated cooperation, team work and commitment throughout the volleyball season.

They participated in a tournament held at our school and won 1st place. We are proud to display their Championship banner

in our gym! Congratulations to all members of the team!

French News

Bonne année et bonne santé! Madame Alarcon, Madame Bakhsh, Madame Virk, Madame Dias and Madame Graf are

excited to let you know about the fun opportunities coming up as part of the French program at SIB. The Grade 4-6 students

will have the opportunity to watch a live French theatre production of "Pinocchio" at the Young People's Theatre on March

11. Please remember to submit the permission form and money as this experience is closely tied in to curriculum and

classroom expectations. This trip is being heavily subsidized by an awarded government bursary and the SIB administration.

Also, on January 30th, Dufflebag Theatre will be visiting SIB for a wonderful performance of La Belle et la Bête. This

opportunity will be for all Grade 4-8 students. Stay tuned for the permission form and cost.

Coming up is SIB's French Carnival, taking place during the week of February 2-5. During the carnival, there will be many

fun French cultural activities going on to celebrate the Quebec Winter Carnival. The French club will continue to meet up

until March Break as well. We are very proud of the amazing performance by French Club students at the Festival of Lights

assembly in December!

Conference helps parents make a difference in numeracy and beyond

The Peel District School Board is hosting its annual parent conference on Saturday, April 18, 2015, at Fletcher’s Meadow

Secondary School in Brampton. This year, the conference will focus on numeracy—25 out of 60 workshops help with math.

Parents will still have the opportunity to attend workshops on other topics, including literacy, special education and science.

This free learning event is open to Peel parents of students at all grade levels.

LEGO Robotics

On Saturday, December 6th, our LEGO Robotics teams participated in the First Lego League qualification tournament held at

Tomken Road P. S. Our Bobcats came in fourth place out of 24 teams. They won the Rookie Team trophy for the best first-year

team at the tournament and qualified to go to the Provincial Championships at the University of Waterloo on February 7th.

Thanks to all the students and the coaches (Mrs. Gaur and Mr. Orazem) for their effort and dedication.

Regional Student Testing –for Grade 4 Students

Every year the Peel District School Board conducts a region-wide standardized test. The Grade 4 students completed the

Canadian Cognitive Abilities Test (C.C.A.T) in December. This aptitude test measures reasoning skills and problem-solving

abilities common to a number of core subject areas and predicts a student’s potential for learning academic material.

SciTech is Coming to Macville Are your children interested in Science? Do they enjoy using technology? Starting in September of 2015, Macville Public

School will be offering a new SciTech program for students who are currently in Grade 5 and going into Grade 6. If you or

someone you know are interested in finding out more, please come to the information evening on Thursday, January 22,

2015 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Humberview, 135 Kingsview Drive in Bolton. Online applications can be found through

Fitness Fun with Mr. Mathew

Happy New Year to all of our active SIB families! We had a great wrap up to 2014 with our Bobcat teams winning the Junior

and Senior volleyball championships! Our Colour Competition was a great success with each colour gaining points for their

team. This week we will be starting tryouts for the boys and girls Bobcat basketball team, with the tournament being held at our

school. Stay tuned for upcoming dates. Also, this February, our Grade 5-8 students will be travelling to Mansfield Ski Resort

for a day of fun and learning how to ski. What an exciting time for our students! Remember to stay active with your Family and

have Fun getting Fit.

Help your family stay warm this winter

Canada Safety Council recommends the following tips for staying comfortable and preventing hypothermia when

working or playing outdoors:

Wear a warm hat—most body heat is lost through the head. Children should keep an extra hat at school.

Wear layered clothing. Layers allow warm air to stay trapped around the body.

Protect your feet and hands. Wear loose waterproof boots. If the boots have liners, carry an extra pair to

replace

damp ones or take an extra pair of socks. Mittens are warmer than gloves. Carry an extra pair of mittens to

school, on outings, etc.

Prevent dehydration and exhaustion, which can lead to hypothermia. Drink plenty of fluids and pace yourself

when doing vigorous activities.

Stay fit by exercising and eating well—people who are fit are less susceptible to hypothermia.

If you stay indoors, avoid moving from a hot environment to a cold one. Excessive sweating caused from an

extreme change in temperature increases the risk of developing hypothermia.

Eat high-energy food such as nuts and raisins.

If you are travelling (on the road or in the wilderness) carry emergency supplies.

Traffic safety in our community

Safety is a top priority at our school. Here is a list of traffic tips to keep students, staff and parents safe while commuting to and

from school.

Respect traffic signs and road markers around the school.

Drive slowly and with caution on and near school property. Adhere to the posted speed limits on any surrounding streets

used by students on their way to and from school.

Always yield to pedestrian traffic. Wait for students, staff members and parents to cross before driving past them.

When dropping your child off at the school, use the Kiss'n'Ride area. This is a supervised area that is designed to keep

students safe.

Do not double park or do anything else to block traffic or draw your child off the curb and into traffic. Do not take shortcuts

over curbs.

Have your child ready to exit the car when you reach the curb. Say goodbye to your child before you park at the curb to let

your child out of your car.

During regular drop-off times, students are to remain in the car until it is safe for them to exit the car onto the curb.

Follow the directions of staff or volunteers on duty in the school parking lot and treat staff, students, volunteers, passengers

and other drivers with respect.

Consider parking off site and walking a short distance to school. This will give you time to talk to your children about their

day, review new vocabulary words, math concepts, etc.

Remind your child to only cross the street at an intersection or crosswalk. They should never “jaywalk” by crossing in the

middle of the street.

Students who bike to school should always wear a helmet, and follow all traffic laws. They should only cross the street at a

crosswalk or intersection—never in the middle of the road.

Register for French Immersion by Jan. 30, 2015

Are you thinking of registering your child for Grade 1 French Immersion (FI) for the 2015-16 school year?

Registration for Grade 1 FI for the 2015-16 school year will be available online at www.peelschools.org/French as of Monday

Nov. 24, 2014 at 9 a.m.

The deadline to register is Friday, Jan. 30, 2015 at 4 p.m. Registrants after that date will be put on a waiting list.

Registration process

A Grade 1 FI enrolment cap is in place. This means that a specific number of spots are available for students entering Grade 1

FI. If the number of students registered by the deadline exceeds the number of spots in Grade 1 FI, a random selection process

system will be used to identify students gaining entrance into the Grade 1 FI program.

All students who make the registration deadline will be placed in a random selection process and assigned a rank using

a computerized random selection process. Spots are not assigned on a first come, first served basis. Once students have been

assigned to all available spots, remaining students will be placed, again in rank order, on the school's waitlist.

Some students will be automatically placed in Grade 1 FI. To find out if your child does not need to participate in the random

she can start kindergarten in September 2014. Registration will be held at our school from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Feb. 2, 3, 4 and 5

Extended-day program for kindergarten students

Families have the option of enrolling their child in before and after-school programs developed by the Ministry of Education to

complement the full-day kindergarten program. These programs are run by qualified, experienced staff from our childcare

partners. At registration, we will ask families to tell us whether they are interested in the extended-day programs. The programs

can only run if there is enough interest among families.

Important information about immunization

In order to attend school in Ontario, your child must have an up-to-date immunization record. When you register your child for

school, you will provide copy of your child's immunization record and the school will send it to Peel Health. After registration,

keeping your child's records up to date is your responsibility. Peel Health reviews immunization records regularly. Students who

are not completely immunized and do not have a valid exemption may not be allowed to attend school.
