As a school we continue to prosper, not just in terms of our academic success but also in the wealth of activities and experiences which combine to create the learning environment which is Sir Thomas Boughey High School. Tonight we come together to recognise the effort and achievement of our talented pupils, but acknowledge that these are just a few from a cast of hundreds. I would like to thank all our parents, pupils, staff, governors and sponsors who are the key to our continued success.

Miss Claire Gadsby is a nationally recognised educational consultant, with a

particular interest in Teaching and Learning and School Improvement. She is one of a rare breed who not only preaches, but is also prepared to go into schools and

demonstrate how the practice works.

Claire worked with the school to deliver a training session in the summer. Today she has been in school, working with pupils and we are delighted to welcome her

as our guest of honour this evening.

Britain in Bloom Competition The school was once again invited to participate in this annual children’s competition which is organised by Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council. The competition theme this year was “Budding Olympians”. Pupils submitted drawings and paintings in response to this theme and once again produced some excellent pieces of work. The prize giving ceremony was held at Keele University and involved pupils from many local primary, secondary and special schools. Our prize winners were:

Highly Commended Rebecca Babb Yr 7

School Council

The School Council consists of 10 democratically elected pupils who play an important part in school life here at STB, in addition with the Head Boy, Head Girl and their deputies. Throughout the year they organise many whole school events for example the Harvest Festival. In addition the School Council work hard raising awareness of the plight of others not so fortunate in our local community by co-ordinating the whole school participation in the Salvation Army’s Christmas Toy Appeal. The School Council also put forward the pupils’ voice; raising issues with the Senior Management Team that the pupils feel are important. Sir Thomas Boughey Peer Mentors

The Sir Thomas Boughey peer mentoring programme is aimed at helping Year seven pupils make the transition to STBHS a smoother one. Within the school we have two groups of peer mentors, a Year eight and a Year nine team. All pupils involved in the scheme are initially nominated by staff. Staff are asked to select pupils who they feel have the correct qualities to become a peer mentor. Pupils are therefore selected who are considered confident, have a good attendance and behaviour record, act as positive role models as well as being trustworthy and reliable. The selected pupils then attend a 6 session training programme to build on their existing skills and to help them develop new talents. In addition to their main role as mentors to other pupils in the school, both groups of peer mentors act as ambassadors, helping out at school events and greeting Year six pupils who attend Sir Thomas Boughey on a Friday afternoon. During their weekly meetings the peer mentors discuss issues that may have arisen either in the bother box or through other methods of communication. They write their weekly blog to go onto the school website and complete activities with year 7 pupils to help them with everyday school life. Please see the school website to find out more information regarding the peer mentors. The Year 8 Peer mentors are: Lauren Ashley Ryan Booth Callum Breslin George Finlay Adam Finney Evie Holt Maxwell Jeffries Bao Lieu Sarah Mainwaring Megan Taylor The Year 9 Peer mentors are: Dean Bamsey Billie Birkin Laura Dunn Libby Fallows Milo James Abbi Jones Thomas Jones Thomas Mason Zac Pepper Daniel Scothern Conner Toogood Adam Turner

Academic Success Summary

As a medium sized comprehensive school, our results always show a range of values depending on our intake each year. We are proud of our results and we gain high levels of academic success for our pupils. Pass rates have improved considerably over the past few years. All pupils who complete the compulsory aspects of a course will be entered, this gives pupils the opportunity to gain a core of 9 GCSEs, although some pupils with a flair for particular aspects of the curriculum have passed more, (a minimum of 5 GCSEs is the requirement to enter Further Education). We enter pupils for a range of academic qualifications including AS early entry, full GCSEs in academic and vocational subjects.
