Experiments and Contributions

• He discovered the metal Thallium in 1861 through the use of spectrum analysis

• In 1873, he determined the atomic weight of the new element in a research which is still a model of analytical precision

• He was also identified the first know sample of Helium• He was the inventor of the Crookes Radiometer, which today is

made and sold as a novelty item • He also developed the Crookes Tubes, investigating canal rays• He invented one of the first instruments for the study of nuclear

radioactivity • He was a pioneer in the construction and use of vacuum tubes for

the study of physical phenomena.

Thallium

• Used in treatment of skin infections

• Used as a dopant for sodium iodide crystals in gamma radiation detection equipment

• Radioactive thallium 201 is used for diagnostic purposes, particularly in stratification in patients with coronary artery disease
