Hi Everyone,Welcome to 2010 and the start of

another year of anticipation. Hopefully youwill have a good calving season and all yourcalves are top notch.

I would like to thank everyone for theirparticipation at Agribition in Regina. Wehad a great show and sale. Keep up the goodwork!

At this time, I would like tocongratulate Ellen Hondl who attended theNational Stock Show in Denver, Coloradoand participated in one of the biggestagricultural shows in the U.S. Keep up thegood work, Ellen, and we are lookingforward to any ideas you have brought backfor the Junior Salers Members here at home.

With your dedication and enthusiasm, Iknow that you will make an impact on all theJunior Members across Canada.

Here is just a little speculation on mypart. I think that Canada is having a beefshortage. I know that the packing andslaughter houses certainly don’t want this toget out as they will have to pay more forsteers and cull cows, etc… but it is bound tohappen. Just take a look at the number ofcattle on feed and let me know what youthink!

Enjoy this next year.

President’s Message

Here we are, in a brand new year, thenew calves are arriving, everyone is preparingfor Bull Sale Season and hoping for a bettereconomic outlook! We’ve got some greatarticles in this issue – make sure you checkout Brenda Schoepp’s market outlook for2010, and the one about the Salers breed basechange and the effect on our EPD numbers. The feds have backed off the January 1stdeadline for use of bar-coded CCIA tags, they have NOT been “de-listed” asauthorized tags, according to CCA’snewsletter of January 18th.

The updated Sire Summary informationavailable soon on our website,www.salerscanada.com will reflect the breedbase change. All EPD generated goingforward will be automatically adjusted to thenew base. Please see the article in this issuefor more information.

Members will be aware of someadditional changes with EPDs, as of January1st the Association is offering a choice ofBreedplan or non-Breedplan registryoptions. There will be a phasing-in periodwhile members become informed of theiroptions and apprise the office of their

decisions for the 2010 calf crop. There are some interesting results

coming out of feed tests in the Maritimes anda commercial producer’s personal experienceon the acceptance of Salers genetics in thefeeding and packing industries. We’veworked hard to get more French content inthe issue – trusting that those articles will beof interest and use to our French-speakingreaders.

Some of our members are activelyworking on export projects to Australasia,France and Mexico. I’m happy to reportincreased trade over the last few years, ofSalers genetics between Canada and the US.A number of SAC members attended theDenver Stock Show in January, where theAmerican Salers Association was celebratingtheir 35th Anniversary – CongratulationsASA! I’m looking forward to hearing aboutall these activities!

Due to rising costs of publication andpostage, SAC may start to cull our mailinglist of addresses for people who are non-members and not showing in our system asbeing past buyers of Salers animals. If you area member, a subscriber, or showing as a bull

or heifer buyer – you will continue to receiveSalers Magazine and any other mailings suchas our 2010 Salers Calendar. As analternative, the magazine is available on ourwebsite – by clicking on the cover of thecurrent issue – and you can ensure youremain on the list by subscribing. In somecases, you may have bought animals but havenot been changed to “buyer”, this is especiallytrue if you haven’t asked for or receivedtransferred registration certificates. Pleasecontact the office if you have a concern.

Thanks to all of the SAC members whotake every opportunity to promote this greatbreed and who support the Association bybuying memberships, registering theiranimals and transferring the papers for sales. Not everyone can serve on a Board or go outon the show road and a lot of memberssupport the breed by advertising in their localpapers or by putting up gate and farm signs.Speaking of signs – the Board is looking intopersonalized gate & pasture signs, possiblesponsors and reduced rates for multipleorders, let us know if you’d be interested!

Cuba is actually 4000 islands, the largestbeing 1100 kms in length, located in theCaribbean Sea. Historically Cuba has alwaysdepended on food imports in order to meet itsneeds. This is partly explained by the fact thatapproximately 30% of the arable land in theterritory has been and is dedicated to growingsugar cane, the product of which (sugar) was formany years the main export of the country.

In the late 80s the fall of the Soviet Union, precipitated a severe economic crisis. Since theyhad previously provided 80% of Cuban imports, which was immediately reflected in the scarcity offood products to meet the population’s needs.

The search for alternative solutionsintroduced food production without the use ofchemicals, in several cities and on “model farms”throughout the country. From 1990 thegovernment of the City of Havana, where 20% of

the population is concentrated, authorized theprovisional use of vacant state property by peoplewho wanted to produce food for themselves, creating "people’s plots" which occupy more than2000 hectares.

In the early 1990's Cubans were forced tomake a dramatic conversion from a petroleum-based economy to an economy largely based onorganic agriculture, renewable energy, and healthylifestyle.

The Salers Sun Fun group was fortunate tobe able, through the efforts of Werner & DebbieGrundke (Salers breeders from Alberta BeachAB), to visit one of the country’s research farms inMatanzas Province in the north central area ofCuba. The farm, Indio Hatuey ExperimentalStation, was first established in 1962 with amission and objective to develop sustainablelivestock and plant production for food andrenewal energy resources. The farm is a teachingfacility with students and grad students in twofaculties of learning, with ties to the University ofGuelph in Ontario and others around the world.Cuban farmers can also access this expertise tolearn a systemic holistic approach to improve theirfarming methods, and to maximize theirproductivity without damaging their soils.

Our group travelled to the farm, in air-conditioned comfort by modern coach whileRéné, our very knowledgeable guide answeredquestions about Cuba and the towns or farmland

we travelled through. Upon arrival, we werewelcomed by Dr. Milagros Rodriguez, who is incharge of the livestock research faculty on thefarm. Plant research is under the guidance of Dr.Giraldo Martin, who is also Director of theStation.

Dr. Rodrigues presented her power pointprogram about the history, objectives andpriorities of the farm, with the assistance of aformer student acting as interpreter. Following aluncheon including farm-grown produce, weheaded out with the Doctors and our interpreterto walk through the test plots and hopefully, to seesome of the livestock. The farm is home to large

School children in Havana – happy, healthy andlearning!

and small ruminants, poultry and other livestockspecies, and we were told there has been somework done here to improve the quality of Cubanbeef.

The “native” cattle breed is CEBU (relatedto the water buffalo) which have shown goodgains without supplements; in dry seasonlivestock feed is a combination of dry or freshcitrus byproducts with grass forage (silage) addedto retain moisture content. Santa Gertrudis,Shorthorn, Jersey and Holstein cross breeding hasnot seen the desired results, so we asked if theywere familiar with our breed. Dr. Rodriguesresponded that they have heard of Salers but werecautious about using Continental cattle because ofthe heat and parasite conditions in Cuba. We leftsome Salers information (in Spanish) with the

researchers and SAC will keep in contact aboutthe attributes of the breed that may be beneficialin their program. There are Salers doing well inhot climates now and there is a recognized“breed”, the Salorn, which is a composite of Salersand Longhorn.

The technological model also changed whennew tractors and other machinery was notavailable, so traditional methods (horse-drawn,smaller machines for seeding, harvesting by hand)and minimum till methods were brought into use– the benefits are a smaller environmentalfootprint and providing work for a segment of thepopulation. Cuba has lots of people but not a lotof per capita income; we learned that there are twocurrencies being used, the local “non-convertible”Cuban peso (CUP) and the “convertible” Cuban

peso (CUC) for tourists and foreign trade.Cubans are paid in local pesos, with an averagemonthly wage of 250 CUP; for comparison: 25CUP = one CUC = $1.25 CAD.

Both Doctors were emphatic that byreturning more land to farmers, using integratedsystems to make them more productive and byprotecting the soil - more production “streams”could be developed and maintained in arenewable, sustainable manner. By-products canbe used in other industries as well, for example“sericulture” provides new and better turf forsports fields and the tourism industry(beautification of hotel grounds). Forestry andenvironmental systems are co-beneficial with thedifferent endemic species of trees providing shadefor animals and protecting soil from baking into‘hard-pan’, the leaves are used as feed for livestockand even silkworms, or fall to the ground tobecome fertilizer. Many farmers have beautifulproperties and are being assisted in developing“Agri-tourism”.

Altogether, our trip to the research stationwas a highlight for our group, which left us withan appreciation for what can be accomplishedwith resources readily available. Ourdisappointment was that none of the cattle, exceptsome very young calves, were where we could havea look at them. During the heat of the day, thecattle prefer to lay in the tall grasses and in theshade of the trees – which are there for exactly thatpurpose. We couldn’t go into the paddocks forreasons of bio-security.

continued from page 7Cuba has received many international

awards for its successes in achieving a sustainablelifestyle and although 200 million children in theworld sleep in the streets today, none of them areCuban; there is no unemployment in Cuba.

Education is free and military service isencouraged but not mandatory. If a Cuban doesnot do well in his/her studies the first time, twoyears of military service will give him/her a secondchance at an education. This providesopportunity to improve oneself if effort is applied. There is a Doctor for every 150 people (includingmen, women and children); there are medicalclinics and pharmacies everywhere, diabetes is amajor problem because of their high-sugar diet.

Cuba is known for its cigars, so our SalersSun Fun group took a day tour to Old Havana tosee the historical inner-city and while there, wevisited a cigar factory. We watched while workershand-rolled the various brands: Montecristo,Cohiba, Romeo & Juliet, Partagas and more. Ourguide explained the process and the differences inthe brand names, even the special labels and hand-made boxes used in the packaging have years ofhistory behind them. Quality control is a matterof national pride and the industry is protective ofits product – we weren’t allowed to bring ourcameras into the factory, so we have no picturesBeach vendors selling t-shirts, wood carvings & other souvenirs.

but the next stop on the tour was the Romeo &Juliet Cigar Shop! Cigars and rum for purchase!

The Havana tour wouldn’t be completewithout learning about another famous product ofCuba - Rum (or Ron in Cuba). A visit to theHavana Club Rum Museum where we viewed awonderful miniature “town” displaying whathappens to the sugar cane to get it to the distillery,it even had working lights in the buildings and anHO model steam train with cars carrying canecircling the display. Our guide explained themuseum was a major distillery years ago, so thehuge vats are still there, and a small workingdistillery is onsite to demonstrate the process tovisitors. It also added the heat and smells of adistillery! A gift shop selling rum, t-shirts, cigars, etc. and a café adds to the revenue for maintenanceof the museum.

The Salers Sun Fun group traditionally likesto enjoy the beach and amenities of the resort, butalso to get out and discover! Most of this year’stravelers signed up to go 4-wheel exploring, starting in Matanzas and driving out into thecountryside. There were eleven SUVs full oftourists, with only the first and last being driven byCuban guides – you can imagine Werner’s concernwhen one of our vehicles got cut off by a taxi, thendidn’t make a turn and the rest of the caravanfollowed them on the wrong course! Eventuallythe lost were found and everybody ended uphaving a great day, including stops at local towns

and farms to see the ‘real’ Cuba, and swimming inthe Ballmar Caves. A riverboat cruise withspectacular scenery and a lobster dinner to top itall off !

While foreign ownership of property isunlikely, investment in Cuba is welcome butlimited to 49% of any joint venture. What theCubans lack in financial riches or material

belongings, they more than make up for withingenuity, resourcefulness and true happiness. Wewere welcomed with open arms, smiling faces andcheerful attitudes from everyone – a truly pleasantexperience and a wonderful way to spend a week.

Of course, our congenial group of Salersbreeders, family, friends and sponsors played a

On enretrouve 18.

Do you or your customers ever getconfused when looking at EPDs fromdifferent breeds? Are your commercialcustomers used to looking at EPDs from theAngus breed? The Salers Association of

Canada has made changes to the EPD base tomake them more easily understood by thecommercial industry.

The base adjustment will affect thebreed averages and percentile rankings for

birth weight(BW), weaning weight(WW),yearling weight(YW) and milk. The tablebelow shows the average EPDs for Salers andAngus, before and after base adjustment.

Both Salers purebred and commercialproducers should be aware of these newaverages and adjust their target EPDsaccordingly. The base change does notchange an animals’ relative ranking withinthe Salers breed. It simply defeats the notionthat Salers EPDs and animal performance arenot competitive within the industry. If Salersbreed averages are more similar to other

breeds, our EPDs will be easier to use andmore informative. It is important to notethat EPDs are still not directly comparablebetween breeds without using the MARCacross-breed EPD tables.

In addition, the American SalersAssociation has also taken this progressiveand useful step; the Limousin and Gelbviehbreeds have confirmed that they have also

adjusted their breed bases to the Angusstandard. Salers Association of CanadaEPDs have always been a valuable tool inevaluating Salers in Canada with those in theUS. With these recent changes, the entireNorth American Salers EPD system is usefulas a tool when comparing Canadian andAmerican Salers to the Angus, Limousin andGelbvieh breeds.

Page 18 Salers Magazine

By Brenda SchoeppIf there is one thing that we have learned

in the last few years in the beef industry, thatis to expect the unexpected! And this yearwill be no exception. The greater financialmarkets will continue to influence thecommodities and beef is one of them. As oilclimbs in price that pushes up the Canadiandollar. The higher the dollar, the morenegative effect that has on cattle prices. Italso makes Canada an attractive country toexport into and last year we saw the evidenceof increased beef imports to Canada. Thereis little sense in this when cattle prices athome are under pressure, but the story doesnot end here. Great opportunities await us in2010.

The fed cattle market will stay underpressure in the first part of the year before ashortage of supply starts to support prices. This is due to three factors. There are a lot ofcattle on feed to meet the packer needs, consumer demand is weak and will be untilthe spring and the market will have to adjustto the appreciation in the dollar. At timeswhen the packer will have to stretch for thefed cattle, he also is aggressive on commercialbeef such as cull cows. Packers have neededthe cows to fill the line and keep them in theblack. Expect commercial beef to stayseasonally strong even into the fall whenprices normally drop off. The best prices for

commercial beef are paid in early spring toAugust.

Feeder cattle have done remarkably wellconsidering the gain in the Canadian dollar. This indicates an underlying demand fromCanada and the US and a wee bit of fear thatfeeder cattle will be in shorter supply. As thecow herd is now reduced, there is a real desireto surround oneself with inventory. Feedlotsare being wise though and have been selectiveon the weight ranges. They continue to buyheavier feeders and yearlings. The memoryof the price rally of 2008 is still vivid in theirminds. At the time of writing, feed grainshad overreacted to a USDA productionreport and softened in a big way. Feed grainswill recover and the feeding industry is likelyto continue to buy shorter term cattle in2010.

The spring of 2010 will be packed withaction as there will be the inevitable statisticalprophets whom will convince a lot of folksthat we are short on cattle and will be shorton beef. Take this time to consider sellingfeeders and all types of breeding stock.Driven by the illusion of a massive slaughterin the Canadian cow herd, the timing is rightto sell breeding stock and be especiallyaggressive on calving ease bulls. Heifers forbreeding will be in demand for a short periodof time, pre-sell then. I don’t believe that thebred heifers will be hot property in the early

fall. Historically, bred heifer prices do notpeak until a full year after an establishedtrend. Forward sell your bred heifers at aprofit margin you can live with and relax. After the July inventory report the world willhave figured out that a lot of western cowsmoved to Saskatchewan. The market forbulls will be strong in Saskatchewan this year.

Producers have done a great job this pastyear and sliced the inefficient cows out oftheir herds and are using productionpractices to extend grazing and reduce feedcosts. As they focus on highly productiveand easy keeping cows this presents a greatopportunity to sell breeding stock with thesequality attributes. And, despite gains in theCanadian dollar, the growing global demandfor red meat will drive exports of Canadiangenetics to countries with growingeconomies. Wear your shades, the future isbright.

Jamie, Debbie and Trenton White of TeepeeCreek AB have been running Salers bulls for manyyears on their Salers x Angus cross cows. They runa natural beef program and claim that if you wantto take this route, the Salers breed is a naturalchoice. Antibiotics are only used when necessaryand these calves are documented when treated;their buyers are notified of which ones havereceived treatment. They claim the Salers haveextra stamina and will to survive which allows lessmedication to be used on their cattle and lowermortality rates. The Whites claim the Salers xAngus cross is an incredible hybrid combination, the cattle are easy to handle and a pleasure to workwith. With a herd of approximately 130 head ofcows, the White family is used to 100% calf crops- Virtually no losses! The 2008 calf crop was soldto Shady Lane Colony feedlot of Codessa AB, thecolony also practices a more natural beef programand the only calves treated are the sick ones.

The White calves impressed the Colonymembers, as they all settled in fast and gained 4.75pounds per day - they were in for only 160 days.Steers and heifers gained the same with 65% of thegroup going “select” (the calves were marketedinto the US). Now Cargill has been calling forShady Lane calves as they are a preferred customer. So the good news from Cargill impressed theColony and they took the 2009 calf crop as well. The White family is very impressed because their

cattle are in demand and they received an 8%premium on their 2009 calves compared to allother calves purchased by the Colony. Heifersbrought the same price as they gain and yield thesame as the steers. The Salers breeders that havebeen providing them with breeding stock have asense that they are on the right track and gainingground. It’s a Win – Win situation!

Early in July, Darlene Keenan, one of our valued Quebecmembers participated in the Contre le Cancer/Conquer CancerBicycle Ride. Montreal to Quebec City, July 10th – 12th, 2009.

The very interesting part of Darlene’s ride is that she, herhusband Mark Mason, and children Kacie and Matt wanted to dosomething completely different to raise the funds needed for her toparticipate in the ride. So they put their own money in and thendecided that their family, Wind Dancer Farms, would donate apurebred Salers Heifer Calf to be raffled; the winning ticket would bedrawn at Richmond Fair after the Salers Breed Show on Sept. 13th.

When the Quebec Salers Association heard about this uniqueopportunity to help a great cause and to promote Salers, they offeredto donate 4 Consolation prizes in the Raffle, to help “sweeten” thepot.

People who bought raffle tickets had the opportunity to tellDarlene of any family members or friends they wished to haveremembered during the Ride. Darlene then wrote those names on herpink 35th Anniversary Salers shirt, which she wore on the final day ofthe Ride into Quebec City. “I wrote them on the shirt to give meinspiration the final last day,” she says. Darlene reported that all of theraffle tickets were sold and the Draw took place as planned.

Fran Dewar of St. Felix de Kingsey won the calf and decided thatshe would gift it to a young friend of hers, Chris Bushey. Chrisshowed the heifer at Expo Boeuf in October and was very happy withhis unexpected windfall!

“The results of the Ride for Cancer – we raised 5.7 Million

Dollars. There were 1450 cyclists from Montreal to Quebec City –280 kms total distance. Thank you to Everyone!”

Steers and heifers have been on test for two years in the Maritime ValueDiscovery Program at the Nappan Bull Test Station in Nappan, Nova Scotia.Purebreds and crossbreds were supplied by breeders and producers in theMaritimes; the program was backed and encouraged by the Maritimeprovincial governments. Sons and daughters of the Salers bulls pictured herewere supplied by Ernest and Bobby Hunter of Outback Ranch Land &Cattle, in Simonds NB.

The Salers results were impressive and very competitive with the otheranimals on test, no surprise at all to Ernest and Bobby. In order not to ‘pick

on’ any of the competition, the Salers steer results here are compared to theaverage results of the other steers on test.

The Discovery Program was originally a 3-year test; it was discontinuedat the end of the second year due to lack of participation by the otherproducers. For more information on the results of the program, pleasecontact Ernest Hunter (506) 375-8459.
