In 1889, the great Gold Rush brought George Harry Brown to Australia from Scotland. He might not have made his fortune with gold but he did start making wine in a barn in Milawa, a small town in Victoria, southeast Australia. That very barn still stands in the vineyards today, and Brown Brothers has grown to become one of Australia’s most famous winemaking families. Nowadays, though, it is as much about the sisters as the brothers. Katherine Brown, George’s great-granddaughter and the daughter of Ross and Judy Brown, is the latest family member to join the firm. Before doing so, she worked in vineyards in France and, prior to that, the coffee industry. “We’re encouraged to have a life outside of the family business before we join,” she explains. Now firmly part of the Brown Brothers wine story, Katherine is infectiously enthusiastic about what the future holds for the next generation of wine drinkers. “We’re always looking for something new to play with, always experimenting with different grape varieties and possible blends.” So much so, there is a ‘kindergarten’ within the winery, where the team of winemakers and apprentices are encouraged to create and develop new ideas. One of their successful experiments was the blending of the Italian red Dolcetto grape with Syrah. The fermentation was stopped halfway, creating a wine with natural fruit sweetness from the sugar in the grapes and a slight fizz. On paper, it doesn’t sound like it would work, but in the glass – and more importantly in the mouth – the wine is a sensation. Made with spicy or Asian food in mind, this light red is also a brilliant partner for barbecued foods. Ross, Katherine’s father, was an early pioneer of rethinking the rules when it came to matching food and wine. The winery was one of the first in the country to have a restaurant on site, the Epicurian Centre, where guests chose their food and the Brown Brothers team picked an individual wine to go with each dish. So how many vineyards do Brown Brothers have? “Enough, as Dad puts it,” is Katherine’s answer. Most are based in the cool-climate King Valley region, where the additional height and seasonal European-like climate allows for a longer ripening period for the grapes. Varieties such as Pinot Grigio and Dolcetto thrive in this valley along with Tarrango, another grape variety pioneered by Brown Brothers, which produces a lighter-style red wine often likened to Beaujolais. Grapes with exotic names such as Zibibbo and Cienna are also producing wines with lower-than-average alcohols, but in taste they are anything but average. Generations of Browns have passed their knowledge down through the family and now it’s Katherine’s turn to put all this know-how to great use. Brown Brothers Sparkling mixed case Dolcetto means ‘little sweet one’, a perfect description for this wine. Brown Brothers mixed case

It might be called Brown Brothers, but the men don’t have it all their way at this successful Australian winery – here we talk to Brown sister Katherine about family, food and fabulous wines

Sister act

Next generation: the Brown family team

Brown Brothers wine estate is based in Australia’s Kin Valley re ion where the cool climate allows for a lon ripenin period for the rapes

It all started in a barn, apparently. In 1889, the great Gold Rush brought George Harry Brown to Australia from Scotland. He might not have

The Utiel Requena is a Spanish DO (area) in Valencia where the Bobal grape is king. Here it has been blended with the Tempranillo grape, producing a wine with dark-cherry flavours. 2004 was a brilliant vintage, and the wine was aged in oak barrels for 18 months before being left to age for the same period in the bottle, developing wonderfully mellow, smooth flavours. Valtier Reserva 2004, Spain, 13%

This luxuriously silky-smooth red made using the Tempranillo grape matches enticing aromas of cherries and spice with rich, opulent blackberry flavours and a hint of chocolate. A year’s barrel ageing, followed by several years spent in bottle, creates the subtle cedar and vanilla notes of a classic Rioja Reserva. Fabulous with cheese. Glorioso Rioja Reserva 2006, Spain, 13%

The grapes for this wine were grown in the Terra Alta region in Spain, where the super-ripened fruit produces wines laden with dark berry flavours. This is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Tempranillo grapes, aged in oak to give the wine greater complexity and depth. Smooth and luxurious, this is happiest when paired with roast lamb. Marqués de Amba Reserva 2007, Spain, 13%
