Karol Balfe, the daughter of a former Sister of St John of God recently visited from Ireland. Her
mother, then Sr Consilio Kehoe, came to Derby as a volunteer from the Irish Province. Consilio spent
a number of years teaching at Holy Rosary School Derby and during this time made many friends. She
also started a youth group which became known as the Joybeats.
After Consilio left religious life and returned to Ireland she remained in
contact with the Sisters and friends in the Kimberley. She married and in
1995, now Mrs Eileen Balfe, she visited the Kimberley to join the SSJG in
celebrating the arrival of the first Sisters in WA. Sadly Eileen passed
away in 2011 and Karol came to see the places where her mother worked
and talk with those who remembered her. Karol spent time meeting people

Ship of Dreams 1968 The SSJG Heritage Centre accepted an invitation
from the Broome Shire to take part in a memorabilia
display as part of the October opening celebrations
for the transformed—yet to be named—multipurpose
arts and community venue. From many options available, we chose the original
Mary Durack Miller play Ship of Dreams which was
performed at the old Civic Centre/Shire Hall in 1968.
Mary was inspired to write the play after a visit to Sr
Catherine’s senior class at St Mary’s school, where
students were dramatising Shakespeare. She felt
that, while these performances were excellent, it
would be hugely beneficial if students had a play
about their own town and its unique history. The original performance 44 years ago was a
considerable milestone for the small sleepy town of
Broome. It involved both St Mary’s and Broome
Primary Schools, and there was great support from
local businesses. Mary was even able to call on the
financial and in-kind support of many talented Perth
artists. Broome locals still talk of the Ship of Dreams and
often come looking for photos..
Clean Out the SHED! We are on the hunt for old super8, 8mm, 16mm, VHS, Betta film—or any other old recordings, to digitise
and add to the growing collection at the Heritage Centre. If you have any film stacked away or in the shed
in a box from ages ago please make contact with Chris Reeves, our Audio Visual Archivist, who has an
amazing array of old equipment that enables him to convert and clean up old film and audio recordings.
Your old film can bring much pleasure to others and be preserved for generations to come. Please phone
91923950 or email [email protected].
