AYING THE WORD, CALIFORNIA, ONE CONJURES UP

the warm sun, the Beach Boys, Hollywood actors, great

food and fabulous people simply living the California

idyll. It doesn’t surprise me in the least that the State Song

is ‘I love you, California’; however, California offers so much

more. The economic powerhouse would rank the 7th largest

economy if it were a separate country in its own right (it has a

debt level to prove it) and one in every eight residents in the

US calls California home. The first movie theatre opened here

in 1902, the largest living tree lives in California with a 102 ft

circumference, and here you’ll find the artichoke, date and raisin

capitals of the world. The national parks and monuments are too

numerous to list as are the world famous golf courses, Michelin

starred restaurants, wine varieties, nature and wildlife; a few

highlights along the way are worth a mention as you start your

cruise up the Californian coast.

Surprisingly maybe, is that the state offers a coastline of few

harbours. California presents itself straight and tall as it borders the

Pacific Ocean and yachts cruising, particularly to the north or south,

could have a tough time finding a nice spot to tuck into for the

night. The Central Coast however offers a variety of options from

picturesque anchorages to marinas with full on facilities.

San Diego, California, is the first Port of Entry to the United

States from the South. The US Department of Homeland Security

has several bases in San Diego; however, the Custom Dock can

handle most vessels tying alongside inside Point Loma and will

happily provide customs and immigration services. This was also

interestingly the home of the America’s Cup from 1987 to 1995.

The Shelter Island Marina across from the San Diego Yacht

Club is also a good option, located at the Island Palms Hotel; it

offers perfect views to the bay as well as Point Loma. The US Navy

Pacific Fleet calls San Diego home and you will also find here the

Miramar Marine Corps Air Station, Sea World, the San Diego Zoo,

and both the Padres Baseball team and the Chargers Football

team. Torrey Pines Golf Course in La Jolla is just a short drive from

the city and is among one of the top ranked courses in the USA.

San Diego’s nightlife is lively with lots of eateries, bars and clubs.

Catalina Island, off the coast of Long Beach, is a

spectacularly beautiful island and a good option when wanting to

escape the hustle and bustle of the Los Angeles area; the majority

of the island is a dedicated wildlife reserve. Helicopter flights

which serve the island are surprisingly affordable. Vessels over

40 m need to stay at anchor while berths for smaller yachts are

available. East of Los Angeles is the Joshua Tree National Park, an

incredible spot to camp and a place to see the most amazing rock

formations. It is an essential (off yacht) excursion for nature lovers.

Sailing north, you arrive at the charming town of Carmel-by-the-

Sea, where Clint Eastwood was mayor for one term, from 1986 to

1988. Unfortunately, there are no decent anchorages or a harbour

here, but the views of the Pebble Beach golf course with its

groomed fairways set among palm trees as well as the beaches

are breath-taking. Cruising towards Monterey and crossing the

Monterey (submarine) Canyon, the deep dark colour of the water

is a telling sign that the sea bed reaches down to depths of more

than two miles. Monterey is often chock a block full of tourists;

skip Cannery Row which is filled with cheap trinkets and head

along to the Monterey History and Maritime Museum and

Monterey Bay Aquarium. Golf lovers will be in ecstasy here at the

Pebble Beach Golf Links or at Poppy Hills. Stop by Pacific Grove,

just two miles west of Monterey to experience the butterfly

migration from October to March. The warm scent of salt air and

the area’s laid back atmosphere, spectacular nature and abundant

wildlife make it impossible to not feel like you’re on vacation. This

is the feeling that carries with you all the way up through Santa

Cruz to Half Moon Bay and onward to San Francisco.

San Francisco, considered to be the world’s largest

landlocked harbour, will be front and centre on the yachting stage

this summer as the city plays host to the 34th America’s Cup.

The Bay Area offers something for everyone. Whether you’re a

foodie, an adventure seeker, a nature lover, or a sportsman there

are a great many options for you to indulge yourself in. San

Francisco’s diverse cultural climate can be tasted, literally, in the

food. Whether you’re in the mood for a contemporary French

meal at Restaurant Gary Danko, or you are inspired by the

philosophy of Alice Waters Mediterranean cuisine

at Chez Panisse, or want to experience the best of

what the wine country offers at French Laundry

there is an abundance of world famous options for

you to consider. Just a short 10 minute walk along

the Embarcadero from the America’s Cup

Headquarters, AC Park, is the San Francisco Farmers

Market, based at the Ferry Building, where chefs

will want to start their day, after no doubt a strong

coffee; here they will be more than uplifted by the

local produce, fish and spices.

Guests may want to experience the Napa

Valley, which isn’t only famous for its incredible

wine but also for its world famous spas, resorts and golf courses.

Stop by St. Helena and walk down Main Street where Robert

Louis Stevenson and his bride admired the Victorian homes

which lined the street. For the more adventurous types, fly over

the Napa Valley in a hot air balloon. Lake Tahoe, due east of San

Francisco, holds 40 trillion gallons of fresh water, enough to cover

the entire state of California in 15 inches of this precious liquid;

the area also offers beautiful hiking, biking and skiing in the

winter months.

Beginning in July and through to September 2013, San

Francisco will experience a full summer of high end and

exhilarating racing, culminating with the America’s Cup Finals. In

this event, the top challenger will battle the defending team,

Oracle Team USA, for the oldest and most prestigious trophy in

international sport. The Bay Area is considered one of the best

venues in the world for grand-prix sailing with its reliable winds

and strong tides which will make for an exciting and challenging

race series. The city, a perfect natural amphitheatre nestled

around hills and steep cliffs, has already gotten its first taste of

what the upcoming summer has in store. The two AC World Series

events in San Francisco in 2012 drew many hundreds of

thousands of people to the shore line, so close in fact that

AMERICA’S CUP

spectators could hear the sailors discussing tactics. The sailors, in

turn, could hear and be inspired by the cheers of those masses of

enthralled onlookers.

For this special event the America’s Cup Super Yacht

Program has created bespoke packages that will provide super

yacht owners, guests and charterers with a quintessentially

unique San Francisco experience. The packages include priority

berthing in the America’s Cup Super Yacht Village, flagged

spectator locations along the race course with an onboard live

race feed, access to the America’s Cup VIP hospitality venues, VIP

functions, seminars, special events and 24 hour agency and

concierge services to make sure that you and your guests get the

most out of what the Bay Area has to offer.

While playing at the Fillmore West in San Francisco, Otis

Redding slept on a houseboat in Sausalito where he composed,

along with Steve Cropper, his last and perhaps greatest hit before

tragically dying three days after its recording. This is where I hope

to be, ‘Sitting On The Dock Of The Bay’ to watch the incredible

sight of the 34th America’s Cup challenge this summer and who

knows, I might just think up a few versus for a song as well!
