Sedentary lifestyle demands sitting for prolonged hours, which links to a variety of diseases. It increases the risk for cardiovascular diseases and diabetes. Now, a new research indicates that it induces the risk of several types of cancer cells in females. Sitting more than 3 hours increases the risk of breast, ovarian and blood cancer. According to scientists, the women who sat for more than 6 hours at a place are at 10% higher risk to these cancers.

According to the June 30th as published in the Journal, ‘Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention’ “Longer the leisure time spent sitting, more the risk of total cancer in women”. Here are a few useful facts to know about how sitting is linked to higher cancer risk in women. These findings will provide you a vast exposure to knowledge on cancer.

Facts Based On Research:

The scientists looked at about 70,000 men and women who participated in a study named American Cancer Society Cancer Prevention Study II Nutrition Survey cohort. 17 years hence, more than 12,000 men and women were diagnosed with cancer. This research was done on the basis of BMI and physical activities.

From this it was concluded that men had a lower risk of cancer due to time spent in sitting idle. However, men who fall in the obese category had an 11% risk of developing cancer, says epidemiologist Alpa Patel at American Cancer Society.

Alpa Patel in her 2010 study found that being less active physically or rooted to seat constantly can affect metabolic chemicals in the body that regulate multiple systems in the body. This leads to cardiovascular problems along with other health complications. In that same study, it was found that women with a sedentary lifestyle or who are less active are likely to die 13 years earlier than the ones who spend less than 3 hrs being idle or sitting. The same thing in case of men increased by 17 percent who sat for at least 6 hours a day.

Patel stated that sitting idle leads to severe metabolic consequences and influence things such as high density lipoprotein, fasting plasma glucose, triglycerides, cholesterol and leptin that is the cause of many chronic diseases and obesity.

Solutions Based on Research

More than one-half of a person’s day spends being seated or doing leisure active activities like watching TV or working on a computer. Dr. David Alter, scientists at University Health Network based in Toronto said in one of his findings that “ Only doing health beneficial physical activity alone is not enough to reduce the risk of cancer”

According to the recommendations of American Cancer Society people who work in a sedentary environment should meet their colleagues instead of in-house mailing, they should take the stairs instead of lifts and follow a strict diet with less carbs and more fiber.

These are the findings based on the suggestions of notable scientist for cancer risk reduction in females. Cancer in women has been a chronic disease, but we can always be one step ahead taking a preventive measure. Improvement in our lifestyle by small instances will surely help us overcome this fatal disease.
