SITUATION REPORT
DECEMBER 16, 2020 THE PHILIPPINES
This fall, the Philippines was hit by typhoonafter typhoon (the regional term for hurricane).On November 1, Super Typhoon Goni madelandfall and was the strongest tropical cyclonein the world in 2020. It hit the region of Luzonjust a week after another cyclone - TyphoonMolave. Less than two weeks after TyphoonGoni, Typhoon Vamco hit the same area. It wasthe deadliest typhoon to hit the country thisyear, causing 67 deaths. The typhoons causedtorrential rainfall, mudslides, flooding, andsevere winds. Due to the multiple cyclones,tens of thousands of homes were damaged.Strong, rapidly intensifying cyclones like theseare becoming more common because ofclimate changed-induced warm oceanwaters. In addition to the damage from thetyphoons, COVID-19 is still a serious issue inthe Philippines.
SITUATION

Lutheran Disaster Response is contributingto an appeal from ACT Alliance to supportthe National Council of Churches in thePhilippines (NCCP). NCCP is providing reliefthrough food packages, hygiene kits, andcash assistance for communities affected bythe typhoons.
Additionally, NCCP will engage in long-termrecovery by assisting in the rebuilding ofdamaged homes, restoring agriculturallivelihoods, and conducting disaster riskreduction and climate change awarenessworkshops.
