Dear Friends,

I am sending you blessings from the beautiful and peaceful Paradise Island in the Bahamas, and I invite you to join us for another season of learning, expansion and joy. My Guru, Swami Vishnudevananda, arrived here 45 years ago and immediately felt the strong spiritual currents and healing vibrations that surround this land. He turned it into a yoga ashram in order to help as many people as possible and to serve humanity in the best possible way. He left his body 19 years ago, and since then we have been trying our level best to continue his mission.

What exactly was his mission? When he came to the West, he felt that he had to teach yoga and vedanta to individuals in order to help them to heal on all levels and to progress on their spiritual path. However, following his 1969 grand vision, there was a shift in his mission. He felt that there was something fundamentally difficult with the karmic situation of mankind and due to his great compassion and love for humanity he was determined to do something about it. He saw planet Earth engulfed by fire and people trying to escape. It was clear to him that there was nowhere to escape and that the only solution to this situation was to break down barriers and to unite.

So, the focus of his mission shifted toward breaking barriers, both literally and symbolically. He broke physical barriers by flying over war zones; he broke religious, cultural, and racial barriers by bringing together leaders from various religions and people from diverse cultures; he invited scientists to bridge gaps between science and spirituality; he gathered speakers with diverse backgrounds including healers, psychics, army generals, and political leaders, to name a few. He welcomed everyone, he embraced them all. He foresaw a time of great transformation, in which humanity will have to face the fact that if we do not learn to live together then we may all die together.

I believe that this time, the time to learn to live together, is upon us. I believe that there is never a better time than now for us to make vigorous efforts to break barriers, just like Swami Vishnudevananda did.

I invite you to join this mission. I welcome you to visit the ashram and experience the multiplicity of names, forms, shapes, religions, and cultures. Through this multiplicity we eventually discover the underlying unity; we bathe in the love and Grace of God as we celebrate the unity in our diversity; we realize our oneness with the entire creation, with God, with the Guru, and with our own essential nature, which is nothing but absolute peace, joy, and bliss.

Om Shanti, Om PeaceSwami SwaroopanandaDirector

Swami Sivananda (1887–1963)

One of the great saints of modern times, Swami Sivananda is the inspiration behind the International Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centers. Following a brilliant career as a medical doctor, Swami Sivananda renounced worldly life and established the Sivananda Ashram and Divine Life Society in Rishikesh, India. Swami Sivananda became one of the most prolific yoga teachers who have

ever lived. Although he rarely left Rishikesh, Swami Sivananda’s teachings spread quickly worldwide. He is the author of over 300 books, and his teachings continue to deeply touch and transform the lives of many. Swami Vishnudevananda (1927–1993)

Swami Vishnudevananda, a world authority on yoga, trained under Swami Sivananda in all aspects of yoga for ten years. In 1957, Swami Sivananda sent Swami Vishnudevananda to spread the teachings of yoga in the west. Swami Vishnudevananda founded and directed the International Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centers and created the first Yoga Teacher Training Course in order to

empower individuals to be ambassadors of peace through Swami Sivananda’s yoga teachings. He was a tireless campaigner for world peace, a master of Hatha Yoga and Raja Yoga, and author of the now classic books The Complete Illustrated Book of Yoga and Meditation and Mantras.

Rev. Heng Sure, PhD, was ordained in the Mahayana tradition of Chinese Buddhism with the late Chan Master Hsuan Hua. In 1977 he commenced a “Three Steps, One Bow” pilgrimage for world

peace, traveling up the California coast from South Pasadena to Ukiah, covering a distance of 800 miles in two years and six months. During that time, and for three years following, he observed a vow of complete silence. Rev. Sure currently serves as Director of the Berkeley Buddhist Monastery. He lectures internationally on human values in the hi-tech world, eating a harmless, plant-based diet, and translating Buddhist music into the West.

Daniel Matt, PhD, is one of the world’s leading authorities on Kabbalah, the Jewish mystical tradition. He is currently engaged in an immense project of translating and annotating the Zohar, the

masterpiece of the Kabbalah. He is the author of The Essential Kabbalah and God and the Big Bang: Discovering Harmony between Science and Spirituality.

Ever since humans began to gaze at the sky, they have wondered how the world began. Traditional religions and modern science offer different explanations about the origin of the cosmos. In this symposium we will explore both spiritual and scientific approaches to this profound topic, and we will search for harmony between the religious and scientific perspectives.
