From this Lady Gaga video ‘Telephone’ she has used iconography of the coke cans, which can appear to be quite, outrageous which is quite distinctive to Lady Gagas style however this is contrasted with her outfit, as she appears to be wearing diamonds and a black leather jacket. This can be seen as juxtaposition as she uses product placement for the cokes as many average people drink from coke everyday but enable to connote her pop star look she has made it look as it could be poverty based being situated next to her extravagant outfits which contrasts the use of colour between the cans and the diamonds on her jacket. The use of coke cans is also a form of advertising as many of her fans would want to purchase the drink if they see Gaga has used the item. The lyrics of this screen shot ‘hello hello baby I cant hear a thing’ fit with the screenshot as she cannot hear on the phone due to the situation and place that she is in, also her hand gesture of her covering her ear helps the audience to recognize what she is doing and why The use of the medium shot signify that she is in a prison as we can see the bars in the background, it can be a common convention for pop stars to be slightly rebellious and break rules and in this situation it also denotes she has done something bad in order to get where she is now. The use of dancers is a big convention of pop music videos as in the background we can see an exotic dancer dancing in a slightly seductive way which would attract the male gaze. The use of this close up shows a convention of pop as many artists of this genre like the audience to see the distinct features on their faces, in this case Lady Gaga has her hand over her face which is a common convention of her music videos. In this case Lady Gaga is covering half of her face with her hand, which is denoting that she may be trying to hide something. However below is another screen shot of her using her hand gestures, which is connoted through many of her videos. Similarly in this screen shot she also appears to be covering her face which shows her convention to be weaved through a variety of her music videos, this appears to be one of in this case the convention here is that she has matched the lyrics ‘poker face’ to her action. This is a typical convention of pop as it is conveyed through many other pop videos such as Taylor Swift’s video for example in ‘you belong with me’’ the lyrics ‘’I’m in my room it’s a typical Tuesday night’’ they are compounded together so that the lyrics match the visuals on the screen. In this screenshot we can see there is a low angle shot attracting the male gaze this is a typical pop convention and also fits to Laura Mulveys theory that women are portrayed in a sexual way using various camera angles, here we can see Lady Gaga connoting her theory. The male gaze is a common typical pop convention to help cater for both target audiences of male and female, in this screen shot we can see the low angle shot showing a clear view of Lady Gaga’s back side. She also appears to be standing infront of a man which connotes that she may be used as an object of desire and has very provocative clothing which is a typical pop convention when pop artists have dancers in background they would also be wearing quite provocative clothing.
