NEED OF SIX STROKE ENGINE In six stroke IC engine having two power strokes during the operation.

Compared to four stroke engine, its having the higher efficiency, because of the two power strokes in that.

By using of that, thermal efficiency is also a higher one.

Then its having the less noise, pollutants and fuel reduction compared to the four stroke engine.

WORKING OF SIX STROKES

In six stroke internal combustion engine, pure air is intake into the cylinder during the first stroke. During second stroke, compressed air is enter into the heating chamber.

Page 4: six stroke ic engin.ppt

while in third stroke (power stroke), release of combustion gases takes place. In fourth stroke, combustion gases exhausted.

During fifth stroke (power stroke), pure air is released into the cylinder from air heating chamber. Finally recompression of pure air is takes place in heating chamber during the sixth stroke.

DESIGN AND FUNCTION:

With the six-stroke cycle, the two supplementary chambers allow parallel function from which results a full eight-event cycle.

Two four-event-each cycles, an external combustion cycle and an internal combustion cycle

Page 7: six stroke ic engin.ppt

The first cycle of four events is of external combustion.

The second cycle of four events is of internal combustion.

FACTORS CONTRIBUTING TO

INCREASED THERMAL EFFICIENCY

After intake, air is compressed in the heating chamber and heated through 720 degrees of crankshaft angle, 360 degrees of which in closed chamber (external combustion)

The transfer of heat from the very thin walls of the combustion chamber to the air heating chambers lowers the temperature and pressure of the gases on expansion and exhaust (internal combustion).

REDUCED FUEL CONSUMPTION AND POLLUTANT EMISSIONS:

Distribution of the work: two expansions (power strokes) over six strokes, or a third more than the in a four-stroke engine.

Elimination of the exhaust gases crossing with fresh air on intake. In the six stroke-engine, intake takes place on the first stroke and exhaust on the fourth stroke.

Less inertia due to the lightness of the moving parts.

TWO EXPANSIONS (WORK) IN SIX STROKES:

Since the work cycles occur on two strokes 8% more than in a four-stroke engine, the torque is much more even.

This leads to very smooth operation at low speed without any significant effects on consumption and the emission of pollutants.

The combustion not being affected by the engine speed. These advantages are very important in improving the performance of car in town traffic.

DRAMATIC REDUCTION IN POLLUTION:

Chemical, noise and thermal pollution are reduced, on the one hand, in proportion to the reduction in specific consumption.

The engine’s own characteristics which will help to considerably lower HC, CO and NOX emissions.

COST COMPARABLE TO THOSE OF A FOUR-STROKE ENGINE:

The six-stroke engine does not require any basic modification to the existing engines. All technological experience and production methods remain unaltered.

The cost of the modification to the cylinder head is balanced by the simplification of several elements, particularly by the lightening of the moving parts.

Comparison Chart

ADVANTAGES

Reduction in fuel consumption by at least 40%

Thermal efficiency reaching 50%. (30% for the actual internal combustion engines)

Reduction of chemical, noise and thermal pollution.

Cars equipped with the six-stroke engine will have fuel consumption and a polluting emission significantly reduced

CONCLUSION:

Reducing fuel consumption and pollution without radically affecting performances would allow the current concept of the automobile.

Only improvements of the current technology can help it progress within reasonable time and financial limits. The six-stroke engine fits perfectly into this view.
