A&T COLLEGE GETS CHAR- TER FOR AMERICAN SOCIETY OF TOOL & MANUFACTURING ENGINEERS j The modem engineer was de- scribed at A&T College last week as a “special breed”. who faces challenges today more tremen- dous than ever. The. speaker was D. A. Schrom, manager of manufacturing and industrial relations, the Delaval Separator Company of Pough- keepsie, N. Y., and national presi- dent of the American Society of Tool and Manufacturing Engi- neers. He appeared at A&T in the latter capacity to present the charter to the newly formed Stu- dent Chapter No. 44 of the So- ciety at a dinner meeting held on Friday evening (Feb. 22). Speaking from the subject. “Engineers, Scientists, or Techni- cians”, he told the dinner audi- ence that an engineer is neither a scientist, the “dreamer, nor the technician, who performs the ex- periment which proves the theory “The engineer”, the speakei said, “is the one who translate: the dream and theory into prac- tical reality . ; the one who de- vises ways to produce more and better for less ... is the bridge between science and human re- lations . . . and is the one who, through his technological situa- tions, permits the expression of the themes in music, art and drama.” Schrom said the engineer is a special breed because he must ex- pood his education beyonu cat of a technician in order to ex- press his full capability, and he must recognize his obligation to act and to decide. He told the audience that the big challenge before the engineer is to solve the world problem which witnesses today one third of this nation still ill-housed, ill- fed and ill clothed. Prior to the delivery of the ad- dress, he formally presented the charter to Harold Hicks, New York City, honor student and junior in mechanical engineer- ing, and chairman of the newly rganized chapter. He was intro- duced by J. M. Marteeua, dean of the A&T School of Engineer- ing. Other persons appearing on the program included: F. A. Dei trick, Winston-Salem, N. C., chairman of the Piedmont Senior Chapter; H. L. Shaw, Charlotte, N. C n na- tional vice chairman, in charge . of -the 'Membership Committee.,, and G. E. Seeley, Detroit, Mich., national director of education. , Dean L. C. Dowdy, acting presi- dent, brought greetings from the college. Other officers of the local stu- dent chapter include: Leweilyn Wills, Hertford, first vice chair- man; Limuel Oates, Bridgeport, Conn., second vice chairman; Sylvester Johnson, Winston-Sa- lem, secretary, and William Als- ton, Climax, treasurer. Speaking from the subject.“Engineers, Scientists, or Techni-cians”, he told the dinner audi-ence that an engineer is neither ascientist, the “dreamer, nor thetechnician, who performs the ex-periment which proves the theory

“The engineer”, the speakeisaid, “is the one who translate:the dream and theory into prac-

tical reality . ; the one who de-vises ways to produce more andbetter for less ... is the bridgebetween science and human re-lations . . . and is the one who,through his technological situa-tions, permits the expression ofthe themes in music, art anddrama.”

Schrom said the engineer is aspecial breed because he must ex-

He told the audience that thebig challenge before the engineeris to solve the world problemwhich witnesses today one thirdof this nation still ill-housed, ill-fed and ill clothed.

Prior to the delivery of the ad-dress, he formally presented thecharter to Harold Hicks, NewYork City, honor student andjunior in mechanical engineer-ing, and chairman of the newlyrganized chapter. He was intro-

duced by J. M. Marteeua, deanof the A&T School of Engineer-ing.
