Vinny loves to chase squirrels. My family and I currently live on two acres of land inhabited by all manner of wildlife, which gives Vinny, our dog, a few furry friends to play with (although I doubt they think of it that way).

Just the other day, I watched from our back window as Vinny crouched low to the ground and inched his way toward a tree where a squirrel was frolicking about. He’s a fast dog, but his agility pales in comparison to these critters. When he bolted for the tree, the squirrel quickly skittered across the yard with Vinny in pursuit. As I laughed, I turned to Abi and accidentally said, “Our god’s chasing the squirrel.”

Classic. It’s a common slip of the tongue, given that

d-o-g spelled backward is g-o-d. So we chuckled over the blooper for a moment, mainly because it was so corny and typical. But then I pondered whether there’s some truth to it. Without a doubt, God chases the squirrels and birds and rabbits — and us, too. We often speak in terms of “finding God” and “seeking truth,” and neither of these are unworthy pursuits. But do we also remember that while we were still sinners, it was God who sent God’s only Son

into the far country to find us? It reminds me of a curious moment in Paul’s

letter to the Galatians. While reminding his congregation of its blessed identity in the person of Jesus Christ, he interrupts his own line of thinking: “Now that you have come to know God, or rather to be known by God, how can you turn back?”

Rather than putting the accent on human agency, Paul reminds us that the agent of salvation is God. It’s not our reaching up to God that accomplishes salvation. It’s God’s reaching down and knowing us. Or as the theologian Fleming Rutledge puts it: “God is the subject of our verbs.”

Remember this as we settle in for worship this morning. Our praise and adoration are a delightful fragrance to God. But even these things are given to us in the person of Jesus Christ, in whom we worship the Father in the power of the Spirit. That’s a comforting thing, isn’t it? We’re free to pursue God because God first pursued us.

And for that, maybe the angels will laugh and say: “Our God’s chasing the beloved.”

—Matt Dodrill

Opening Sentences Lydia Tucker / Kurt Pottkotter

In our world of celebrity and ego and pride, we gather this morning to tell another story, a better story that’s not about how great we are but about how great is our God. Jesus is the name above all names and the name at which every knee will bow in heaven and on earth. His name is glorious.

Greeting to Worshipers Matt Dodrill / Leanna Coyle-Carr

Guests are invited to take a Response Card from the pew rack, complete it and place it in the offering plate when it is passed later in the service.

You also are invited to take the red fabric rose from the card and place it on your lapel or blouse to help others identify that you are our honored guest today.

Prayer concerns will be received and prayed for this week when listed on an intercessory prayer card from the pew rack and placed in the offering plate.

Reading — Revelation 21:1–5a, 22–26 Judy Coleman / Andrew Warden

Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. And I saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “See, the home of God is among mortals. He will dwell with them as their God; they will be his peoples, and God himself will be with them; he will wipe every tear from their eyes. Death will be no more; mourning and crying and pain will be no more, for the first things have passed away.” And the one who was seated on the throne said, “See, I am making all things new.” … I saw no temple in the city, for its temple is the Lord God the Almighty and the Lamb. And the city has no need of sun or moon to shine on it, for the glory of God is its light, and its lamp is the Lamb. The nations will walk by its light, and the kings of the earth will bring their glory into it. Its gates will never be shut by day — and there will be no night there. People will bring into it the glory and the honor of the nations.

This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Gracias a Dios.

Offertory I Want to Walk as a Child of the Light arr. Michael Burkhardt

+Offertory Response old 100th

Our God is making all things new, a promise that we know is true.Through eyes of faith we long to see a love-transformed community.

A place where truth and justice reign and healing triumphs over pain,Where all have dignity and worth and peace is passed throughout the earth.

Hebrew Scripture Reading — Psalm 27:1–6 Jessica Capps / Darren DeMent

The Lord is my light and my salvation. Should I fear anyone? The Lord is a fortress protecting my life. Should I be frightened of anything? When evildoers come at me trying to eat me up — it’s they, my foes and my enemies, who stumble and fall! If an army camps against me, my heart won’t be afraid. If war comes up against me, I will continue to trust in this: I have asked one thing from the Lord — it’s all I seek: to live in the Lord’s house all the days of my life, seeing the Lord’s beauty and constantly adoring his temple. Because he will shelter me in his own dwelling during troubling times; he will hide me in a secret place in his own tent; he will set me up high, safe on a rock. Now my head is higher than the enemies surrounding me, and I will offer sacrifices in God’s tent — sacrifices with shouts of joy! I will sing and praise the Lord. — Common English Bible

The flowers on the chancel today are given in honor of Alissa Payne for her accompaniment with the Youth Choir.

Welcome to Wilshire today. If you are a guest with us today, we welcome you warmly to our congregation. We would like to get to know you and tell you more about our church. Please take a Response Card from the pew rack, fill it out and place it in the offering plate when it comes by.

George Mason currently is preaching a four-week sermon series inspired by the new book written by Rabbi Debra Robbins of Temple Emanu-El. The book, Opening Your Heart with Psalm 27, explores this psalm of David written in the context of spiritual practices for the Jewish new year.

George’s sermon series looks at the psalm to recenter our lives in God according to its wisdom. Copies of Rabbi Robbins’ book are available for $10 in the front office for any who would like to dig deeper.

During these four weeks, all are invited to engage in a spiritual practice of meditation on the words of Psalm 27. Here are some ideas on how to get started:

• Meditate on other English translations of the psalm, provided on the next two pages.

• Read one verse a day and let it soak in.• Commit to read the entire psalm every day for four weeks.• Obtain Rabbi Robbins’ book and read through it and reflect upon it

during this season. Seek to understand what a Jewish rabbi has to teach a 21st century Baptist about the ancient Psalms.

The Lord is my light and my rescue. Whom should I fear? The Lord is my life’s stronghold. Of whom should I be afraid? When evildoers draw near me to eat my flesh— my foes and my enemies are they— they trip and they fall. Though a camp is marshaled against me, my heart shall not fear. Though battle is roused against me, nonetheless do I trust.

One thing do I ask of the Lord, it is this that I seek—that I dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to behold the Lord’s sweetness and to gaze on His palace. For He hides me in His shelter on the day of evil. He conceals me in the recess of His tent, on a rock He raises me up. And now my head rises over my enemies around me.Let me offer in His tent sacrifices with joyous shouts. Let me sing a hymn to the Lord. Hear, O Lord, my voice when I call, and grant me grace and answer me.

Of You, my heart said: “Seek My face.” Your face, Lord, I do seek. Do not hide Your face from me, do not turn Your servant away in wrath. You are my help. Abandon me not, nor forsake me, O God of my rescue. Though my father and mother forsook me, the Lord would gather me in.

Teach me, O Lord, Your way, and lead me on a level path because of my adversaries. Do not put me in the maw of my foes. For false witnesses rose against me, outrageous deposers. If I but trust to see the Lord’s goodness, in the land of the living—Hope for the Lord! Let your heart be firm and bold, and hope for the Lord.

THE INFINITE shelters me as I encounter difficulty and painThe Infinite holds me close in deep and hidden places

And lifts me high upon a rock. Now I can see through to what is trueAnd I will offer my gifts of thanks

And I will sing and make music to the EternalPlease, Infinite One, Listen to my voice, hear my call

Civil Dialogues continues

Join us this Wednesday at 6 p.m. in Community Hall for the third in a three-week program on how to have civil dialogues about difficult issues. This week’s presentation will be led by Amanda Tyler, executive director of the Baptist Joint Committee on Religious Liberty, on the subject of Christian nationalism. Amanda has been a frequent visitor to Wilshire and has led a recent national effort to call attention to the dangers of merging national and Christian identity.

Wilshire on the Go

You’re invited to something new: Wilshire on the Go is a way to connect with Senior Pastor George Mason and our pastoral residents at Tuesday noon gatherings across the city, close to where you work and live. Four luncheon dates are planned for this fall. This is a great way to bring a friend or coworker to meet George and hear an informal dialogue about issues of the day. The first event will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 8, at the Legacy Hall Food Court in far north Plano. Meet there with George and Leigh Curl. Prepaid vouchers for the food hall will be available for $15. Get a voucher, gather your lunch and meet the group in a reserved space on the third floor. Gather anytime between 11:45 and noon, and leave when you need to. The second Wilshire on the Go lunch event will be held on Oct. 15 downtown at The Woolworth, 1520 Elm St. Plan to order off a preset menu. Additional luncheon events are planned for Oct. 29 in the Galleria/Addison area and Nov. 19 at or near CityLine (LBJ and Bush Tollway). No reservation is needed; just show up — and bring a friend.

Register for youth fall retreat

This year’s Wilshire Student Ministry fall retreat is Nov. 23-24 at the URJ Greene Family Camp near Bruceville, Texas. Retreat theme is “Seeking Shalom,” and retreat speakers are Christine Browder, Mary Beth Foust and Mary Lu Hare. Registration is $90, and financial assistance is available. Festival of Church Music

Wilshire’s Sanctuary Choir will participate in a Festival of Church Music on Sunday, Oct. 13, at 7 p.m. at the Meyerson Symphony Center. Held every three years, the festival features prominent national and international conductors. This year, Eric Nelson, artistic director of the Atlanta Master Chorale, will conduct the 400-voice choir comprised of singers representing dozens of churches throughout North and East Texas. Designed to highlight sacred music representing many eras and styles, the festival will feature music from chant to Gospel to classic hymns, as well as a new setting of Psalm 150 composed by Eric Nelson. Ticket prices for the concert begin at $10. Follow the link at wilshirebc.org/registration.

The Holy Spirit before Christianity

Wilshire congregant Jack Levison will present a brief talk about his newly published book next Sunday, Oct 6, at noon in Community Hall. Lunch will be served, and no reservation is needed to attend. His book, The Holy Spirit before Christianity, expands the foundation of Christian belief in the Holy Spirit by taking readers back 500 years before Jesus, where he discovers history’s first grasp of the Holy Spirit as a personal agent with the prophet Haggai and the author of Isaiah 56–66. He argues that Christian pneumatology—

Praying with a Pen

Wilshire has been invited by Smith & Helwys publishing to test-drive a new writing group project, “Praying with a Pen.” During five weekly sessions, participants will read some of Jesus’ most-familiar parables, call upon the Holy Spirit to lead their thoughts into new areas of understanding and then write down and share perspectives with each other. This will be a time of personal spiritual formation as well as experimentation, with members invited to participate in a survey that will help Smith & Helwys shape this new activity for other congregations. The group is open to writers, journalers, scribblers and thinkers but will be limited to 12 participants. Sessions will be on consecutive Sunday afternoons, Oct. 6 to Nov. 3, from 4:30 to 6 p.m. in the Parlor. If you would like to participate, sign up at wilshirebc.org/registration.

Wilshire’s mission

1. In worship: Place your cash or check (payable to Wilshire Baptist Church) in the offering plate during any of our worship services.

2. By mail: Send to Lori Gooden, Wilshire Baptist Church, 4316 Abrams Road, Dallas TX, 75214. Please write on your check if it is intended for the Unified Budget or another purpose.

3. Online: Schedule a recurring or one-time gift charged to either your debit or credit card or directly as an ACH from your checking account. Visit wilshirebc.org/give (be sure you have enabled cookies on your phone or tablet) or scan the QR Code in today’s order of worship.

4. Automatic bank pay: Go to your bank’s website, log in to your individual bank account and follow your bank’s instructions to set up Wilshire as a new payee. Your bank will print and cut a check.
