Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time A God who judges with leniency and clemency, a Spirit groaning because we know not how to pray, a pa-tient master waiting to separate wheat and weeds, a tiny seed growing into a great bush, and the miracle of yeast and flour! All of these images found in our readings today speak of the unexpected, the countercul-tural, and of the compassion and intimacy of our relationship with God. Many times we are afraid to come to God in prayer, or we may turn away from our God because of our weakness and sinfulness. We are not presented with a vengeful God who is waiting to smite us, but a God of infinite love and wisdom and pa-tience who will show us the way. What an amazing gift this is! WE NEED TO GROW We live in an instant world of microwaves and drive-throughs and a disposable society in which things quickly become obsolete, so today’s message is very strange. In all the readings today, and especially in the Gospel, we see transformation, but it is not some-thing that happens overnight, nor does it take place without effort. We are met with parables of a patient and loving God who can see a positive outcome at the end and is willing to wait and nourish us and help us all get there. The sower’s seeds require a growth peri-od and some careful sorting. To make the bread, one must knead it and wait patiently. In planting a mus-tard seed, something so tiny yields great results, but not until after completing a period of dormancy and waiting. WHAT IS OUR LEAVEN? In our own growth, something usually spurs us on and calls us to change. For a young couple who find out they are expecting, this may be the impetus to “grow up” and straighten out their spending habits. For an-other, perhaps a heart attack or prolonged illness calls one to wake up and gives one a second chance at life. Losing a job or a spouse or surviving a car accident may mean it is time for a “do-over.” Isn’t it amaz-ing to realize that we are blessed with a tender, loving God who will walk through all these changes in our lives, who is cajoling us into a better self? Here is a God who doesn’t pull the plug because of our sins, but is willing to wait and sort and “gather the wheat.” Let us be grateful for this gift of loving mercy. Recall the simple prayer found in Psalm 86:15–16: “You, O Lord, are a God merciful and gracious, / slow to anger, abounding in kindness and fidelity. / Turn toward me, and have pity on me; / give your strength to your servant.” Today’s Readings: Wis 12:13, 16–19; Ps 86:5–6, 9–10, 15–16; Rom 8:26–27; Mt 13:24–43 [24–30] Copyright © J. GOOD SEEDS Today Jesus continues to speak to his followers using parables. What a rich treasure we are given today in three parables about the kingdom of heaven! The kingdom is likened to a man sowing good seed in his field, a mustard seed, and yeast mixed with flour. As they did last week, today the disciples press Jesus for an in-terpretation of one of the parables—the parable of the man sowing good

Our Faith seed. Lest we think that these para-bles are simply amusing little anec-dotes, Jesus’ interpretation should be seen for what it is—a warning. Wailing and grinding of teeth in a fiery furnace await those who are children of the evil one. This parable points to the struggle for today’s be-liever. Sometimes, through sin, we sow weeds and prevent the love of Christ from blossoming. Let today’s Gospel help put us back on track. Let us recommit ourselves to preparing for the last days, the harvest, by blos-soming as the good seeds we were created in love to be. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Brothers & Sisters, This weekend we continue with the “P” of STEPS, Practice. We practice our faith to build a closer relationship with God. Just as an accomplished violinist in the Philadelphia Orchestra practices to keep his or her seat. Or just as a professional basketball player must practice to maintain a spot on the team. An Attorney must stay current with the law to keep his or her license. And, as a surgeon must keep up with the most current procedures. We, too, must practice our faith to develop a strong relationship with the Lord. We do this through our devotion to daily prayer, by regu-larly reading of Scripture, by attending Mass and receiv-ing the Sacraments. The practice of daily prayer brings us into a closer relationship with our Lord. Remember that prayer is an open dialogue with our God. Consistent read-ing of Scripture helps us understand the devotion God has to us, His people. The Mass brings prayer and Scrip-ture together. The Sacraments: the Eucharist strengthens us to become more like Jesus. The Sacrament of Recon-ciliation brings us into a state of grace to better receive our Lord in Holy Communion. All these working together help us maintain and deepen our faith. Lastly, from the bottom of my heart, I want to thank you for your continued generosity. Especially for our brothers and sisters in Guatemala. May God bless you! Today, and every day, together, let’s pray, let’s worship and spread the good news of Jesus! Fr. Steve

Sundays after 9am mass from 9:45am to
10:30am. Beginning July 19
Due to the pandemic, there has been a spike in unem-ployment, which has caused a significant increase in the demand for food from core humanitarian services in Philadelphia that supply those in need with meals. For my Eagle Scout Project, I am collecting food for these organizations that are so im-portant to the livelihood of our brothers and sisters. I am requesting your assistance in one of the following ways: 1. You can purchase non-perishable food items, which I will be collecting both before and after the 4 pm vigil mass on July 25th and the 9 am mass on July 26th, as well as the August 1st vigil mass and the August 2nd 9 am mass. There will also be a large Rub-bermaid bin with my name on it in the narthex for drop off at other times as well from July 19th until Au-gust 2nd. (Non-perishables: peanut butter, jelly, pasta, spaghetti sauce, cereal, tuna, beans, rice, other canned foods), or 2. You can make a casserole, which I will be collecting before the masses which I previously listed. If you wish to make a casserole, there are tins for the casseroles in the narthex, located outside the hallway that leads to the bathrooms. A list of the various recipes from which you can choose from will be posted on the parish website. There will be a drop off sheet at the receptacles for #1 or #2 above. I ask that you please record your name and what you have donated so I can record it for my project. If you are unable to drop off the casseroles, I can stop by to pick them up. You can reach me by email at [email protected]. If you are unable to donate non-perishables or make a casserole, but still would like to help, you can make a monetary donation through the St. Norbert’s website towards the bulk purchase of non-perishables.
The link is https://parish.stnorbert.org/ and click on the “DONATE” button in the upper right corner of the web page to find a specific option for donations for “Ethan Strohmetz - Eagle Scout Project”. It is very simple, tax deductible, and easier than writing a check!
THANK YOU so very much for your time and help! Ethan Strohmetz
